It is by far the best version of "A un dottor della mia sorte", a very difficult aria. Desderi expresses all the coloraturas with an extreme naturalness, without contracting the timing of the notes, as many other performers do, but above all respecting a la la clarity of speech that was essential for Rossini. Even in the "sillabato" parts.

It's quite surprising that since 1816 certain terms were already in use like "infinocchiare", "corbellare", still in use. "I promessi sposi" were written just few years after (1827, reviewd 1840) and for those that don't know it, it is considered fundamental for the Italian language at the time not yet really established. Besides that, all the verses of this opera are very present in an Italian much more easy than others that came laters.

You're being silly. Or perhaps you've never sung a Patter Aria yourself? This is not about sustained legato singing and vocal subtleties. This is all about delivering a Message - forcefully and rapidly. He sang ALL the words and notes - kept the voice forward and smoothly produced - and gave a wonderful characterization.

Si sa benissimo come Desderi ha fatto la carriera di cantante e che da un pò di anni dire ora! ma se oggi un cantante giovane dovese cantare cosi non arriva da nessuna parte almeno che non abbia gli stessi inciucci di Desderi. E comunque bravo professionista su questo non ci piove!

The reason for that is that most conductors, offered the chance to work with a singer this good in this opera, will very wisely cast him as Figaro. Bartolo does not need to sound this good, because he's the bad guy; Figaro does, because he has to sing coloratura out the wazoo, which the Figaro in this production muddied up left and right. Sigh. . .
