Wixell is the best Rigoletto i've ever heard. His performance is of amazing force, expessivity and emotion. This recording is also the best Rigoletto recording as a whole and it is sad that it hasn't be released in audio.

What? He's so throaty? What about Ruffo? Bastianini? Gobbi? Taddei? Granforte? Warren? I can think of about 200 baritones 50x better than Wixell. It's certainly not the best Rigoletto. Wixell is horrible, Gruberova is horrible, Pavarotti is Great but nowhere near Di Stefano, and Furlanetto is also horrible. Chailly's conducted is also nowhere near Gavazzenni or Serafin.

XxSaruman82xX I completely agree!!!!! Even Cappuccilli (who i don’t like as Rigoletto) sounds 100x better. Wixell is the worst baritone I’ve heard in Rigoletto. Something about his voice is tenorish, but not like MDM. MDM would sing this way better.

Wixell was so good in this film. His acting and singing are so enjoyable. It's just a beautiful film to watch and hear. The casting was truly ideal with the best possible results attained by director Ponnelle and conductor Chailly.

I can recall a chorus singing job with Mr Wixell in the Canary Islands where he sang the Bass solos of the Verdi Requiem, and Scarpia of Tosca. He was very friendly and personable. I remember he came up to me during an intermission of the Requiem and complemented me on how I was dressed including some glistening patent leather shoes I was wearing at the time. One thing lead to another and he asked me about my vocal career plans. I was at the University of Michigan, and hoped to move on to more professional engagements after my studies. He offered me the opportunity to audition for him in Germany at some future date. I took his contact information, but it was never to be. I returned to my home town, Baltimore and began teaching school.

As I pointed in some comments before, Wixell voice sounded "light" in recording but he had a very powerfull voice, and yet so clear you could understand every single word. And his acting was over the topo. He was a show stealer, I believe many tenor stars would "hate" to be casted with him for it.

All books from him are quite a good read. The Castle is my favourite, definitely a very compelling and surreal story. Not that sarcastic to mix up a writer and a painter's name, even though they are from different nationalities.

Ingvar Wixell logra aquí un admirable Rigoletto por la calidad de su interpretación y su trabajo actoral, pero a la vez es sorprendente porque no tenía las características vocales necesarias para el personaje, sin embargo suple esto con creces haciendo un uso inteligentisimo de su talento actoral y la gran expresividad de su forma de cantar.
