"Laudate Dominum in sanctis eius" is part of Claudio Monteverdi's great collection of sacred music, "Selva morale e spirituale" (Moral and spiritual forest), published towards the end of his life in 1640/1641. While there are many great works in diverse styles in that collection, this "Laudate" stands out. It is a motet for solo voice and basso continuo: a flowing melody, clear harmonies, driving rhythms (including a reference to the ciaccona), and a psalm text. A recipe for success! And that is what Monteverdi's Laudate is: one of the most famous pieces in the repertoire. It shows a master in total command of means and material, free to give the most moving expression to the psalmist's words with simple yet profound musical gestures.

This rendition was certainly impressive, in the subtle ways you already have us used to. Anneliina’s warm and crystal-clear voice is perfect for the joyful, festive tone of the piece, making it sound like a celebration of life. And that looooong sustained note, and the coloratura near the end! The resonance of the chosen room also fits the aria so well, lending some ethereal quality to the song and giving the impression of something that is halfway between the earthy and the mystical. And Tuomas’ archlute is the glue which gives consistence and coherence to the whole, making it one. The visual aspect goes in perfect consonance with everything else, with some shots truly evocative of the heavenly. I really loved it, especially the ending, where she opens the door, seemingly “freeing” herself and stepping into the light with a gorgeous smile on her face. It was quite meaningful to me. I love you. Your videos have become something I really look forward to, a little, lovely, shining ray of sunlight. Thank you so much!

Thank you for your thoughts once more! It's interesting that you should comment on the resonance of the space. It is a very special place that we had for ourselves for a limited time, and the acoustics were really peculiar. It is an old industrial space, a wonderful room for live performances, and also for recording, but with some problematic traits: traffic noise was loud outside and could sometimes ruin takes, and, like you noticed, some frequencies reverberated more than others. Definitely not neutral at all, but we always like to have character!
