Claudio Naranjo - Seeker After Truth - Interview by Iain McNay
Author of over 20 books including 'Healing Civilization' and 'Enneagram of Society: Healing the Soul to Heal the World'. In this interview Claudio talks about his life and his first teacher, Totila Albert. How he first experimented with Ecstasy in therapeutic sessions; how he worked with Fritz Pearls; his time with Oscar Ichazo and how he took the basic Enneagram idea and developed the personality types. He shares about his first 'Seekers After Truth' groups and the long period when he felt he had 'fallen from Grace.' A fascinating interview.

I know this is an ancient video. I was in Arica and learned all the fixations which all had complete descriptions so I am not sure what Naranjo is saying about how he developed the ennea-types. I may get his book and read it. Yes fascinating to listen to his descriptions of Ichazo which sound true. I am grateful for my early experiences with Ichazo/Arica which were profound. Yet there were untrustworthy pieces to the puzzle so I left and did other personal work. But I recently went back to it and am finding the particular work I am doing to be very useful. I am not a big fan of many of the enneagram authors who, from my point of view, seem shallow but I do like Claudio and appreciate his depth which is showing forth in this interview.

When were you in Arica? Was it post-1970?

@@katherinefauvre6630 I did the Arica work first in Atlanta in 1972 I think - they were called 40day trainings and I did two extended ones in a row. They were fantastic! I thought I hit nirvana which, unfortunately was far from the truth. But I had some exceptional experiences. Anyway went out to San Diego and was with the Arica community there. Went to NYC for an advanced training. Was also involved with Muktananda and other stuff. Ended up in SF. Got disillusioned with the direction of the school in the 80s. Did read Naranjo’s book - very good book but a bit dark in the sense of the seeming futility of ego.

@@billgoedecke2265 Do you remember who your instructor was? I did not attend a reunion intensive with Ichazo until 2005 but I really enjoyed it... I lived in Maui, Hawaii for a year and got to know Mark Sheehan. Mark came to an Enneagram Workshop I was teaching on Maui and brought his staff so I could teach them the Enneagam. He thought that they would listen more to me than to him..... Ironic isn't it? I was great to get to know Mark and Marian Scott. Mark joined Arica in early 1972 as well. He said that the fixations were added later in 1972 ...so you were fortunate to have the fixations included as they are so meaningful... Naranjo added to Ichazo's work beginning in 1970. I think Naranjo was trying to address that time just prior to the Arica 10-month training. Ichazo did later take some of it out because it was too psychological in nature which is why I asked you when you did the Training. ....

@@katherinefauvre6630 thanks much for your thoughtful reply. I didn’t see it until yesterday (March 11 23). As I recall - it was so long ago - there wasn’t a focus on the fixations in the 40-day I did in the early 70s but the enneagram was used - for reviewing one’s life experience in the domains for sure - the work seemed to be framed around the nine hypergnostic points. I am not sure when I took in the fixation teachings but I did along the way. Bobby Fink is the only name I recall from Atlanta.

Gurdjieff said to read Beelzebub 3 times. Humbly I can report it has been (relatively) easy sailing this third time, which shocks and amazes me. Like John Pentland, a student of Gurdjieff has said: "Many wonderful things are possible." And of course it was how he said it, with Real wonder.

Claudio Naranjo, doesn't say that he stole the Enneagram from Oscar Ichazo.
@katherinefauvre6630
@katherinefauvre6630 Жыл бұрын
He didn't... In my research on the history of the Enneagram with all schools of thought... I learned that Ichazo said he was surprised that Naranjo gave him full credit for the Enneagram. Although that is what was assumed when others did not honor the confidential agreement with Naranjo, which makes sense.

@greenrate-- Good Lord. Any of his works will clear that up pronto. Organismic self-regulation was his goal. He echoed Maslows conviction that inner guidence was a fruit of psycho-spiritual development. And don't fault a man for his icons and totems, eh?

It's precisely seeking that seems to me to be Naranjo's problem. "Exploring" or "inquiring" would give him different expectations . . . and a different kind of unfolding of experience. BTW . . . you must have a remarkably limited experience of arrogance if you consider my "seems"s and "wonders"s and "may not"s . . . to be supremely so.

What? Trying not to be offensive but this comment is arrogance at it's supreme. "seek"ing involves being open. Open to others experiences and thoughts to get a different perspective. Yes, you must always question what's being said but to ignore what others might offer and rely only on "individual exploration of one's own personal experience" is well..very closed minded... good luck!
@QED_
@QED_ 12 жыл бұрын
By temperament or capacity, Naranjo seems to have remarkably little confidence that individual exploration of one's own personal experience can be an effective spiritual path. Instead, he seems to feel that he needs to "seek" spirituality outside himself (in gurus or drugs, for example). I wonder if he's aware of that. It's one reason . . . that what he has to say . . . may not be equally suitable for all people.

@@QED_ No problem, it was advice, feels that you were expecting a problem with your comment though immediately you jumped to it. You are coming from subjectivity. What's the point of commenting on something if your argument it's not objective and you are jumping to conclusions that belittle the man. This is saying either that you achieved some kind of understanding/knowledge in your individual exploration, and that's why you are sure, you know it. then you will explain why...or Is it just a subjective comment in an effort to sound smart?

I don't know if Claudio Naranjo ever checks the comments here, but I hope if he does that he will consider this journey was a journey in darkness, away from God. I was once in that journey myself before I encountered the true Christ, the Christ who is eternal and personal and died on the cross to pay the penalty for sins.

There was not even a concept in Hebrew or Greek for that matter that Jesus died as a "payment" for.sins. The sinfulness of the age murdered him. The kingdom "thinking" of the age. But you have much studying to do before you go around talking for Jesus.
