I grew some sweet peas this year for the first time via winter sowing (Zone 7A NJ). I was nervous at first because I always thought you can’t disturb their roots and with winter sowing you will have to separate them. I already transplanted them on the ground and so far so good. No blooms yet but they’re definitely growing tall. Crossing my fingers they bloom. Seeing you starting multiple seeds in 1 container gives me even more confidence now.

I'm in US zone 5, with sandy soil. I plant seeds in the ground in August, they germinate and stay small and green all Winter. Even under feet of snow and -15F. When it warms up in Spring, they start growing again. The stems are extremely thick, leaves dark green and already blooming in May. In wet clay soil, might be a different story, worth trying it though.

I'm in New Zealand where we are just entering winter. I direct sowed my first lot of sweet pea seeds as I was planting my bulbs during autumn. I've noticed the autumn sown sweet peas are always more robust than the ones I plant in spring. I'm amazed to hear that your seedlings survive the snow and such harsh temperatures! It gets cold here in winter (well - what we call cold lol) and I live near NZ's 2nd highest mountain (Mt Taranaki), but it's a rare thing to get snow around here. Good luck with your gardening - I can't wait for spring!

This was very helpful. I started my sweet peas from seed this year for the first time using the cold method. They are in the garden now, but not growing very much. I think I may have put them in the ground too soon. I will go ahead and give them some fertilizer and just be patient! I'm glad you demonstrated how to root the cuttings. This will be helpful in multiplying my crop next year. Also, the fact that you separated the cuttings by hand and put them in the larger pot was important to know. Some of the other videos I have watched cautioned that sweet peas don't like to have their roots disturbed. They must be more adaptable than we think. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

An excellent tutorial Claus! You are very set on detail, hence I can say, you reap what you sow. Like most things in life, preparation/foundation is the key element. Love the metal stakes, they can be recycled for many years to come. Also, you mentioned you plant the sweet peas throughout summer, which means you have a continual flow of beautiful flowers! I was told where we live, planting times, the better seasonal time is spring and then before autumn. Those were the old rules, now I am so happy that we can plant throughout spring to autumn. You are so encouraging to me, giving me such inspiration to not stagnate but to keep going. You truly are a blessing in my life, I am sure to many other gardeners as well as we can always learn new techniques from each other. Thank you.
