My cottage border … planted densly to suppress weeds

Here I’m showing my cottage border in naturalistic style - planted densly to suppress weeds. Bulb plants - daffodils, tulips and alliums - are growing together with perennials, shrubs and small trees. I’m telling how I’m planning a border and talk about colors, shapes, forms and repetition. And the best is, that I don’t need to weed, because seedlings don’t get space!
My name is Claus Dalby, and I live in Risskov on the outskirts of Aarhus in Denmark. To date, I have written about 30 books on flowers and gardens in Danish, and my garden has been featured on many TV shows. In March 2022 my first book in English will be available. I consider my home (built in1908), and its garden with its neighboring wood, as my sanctuary. When I started gardening in 1996, there was just a large lawn covering approximately 1 acre (4,000 square meters), but today the grass is long gone - replaced by 15 hedged rooms with varying colors and moods. Additionally, one of my great passions is growing in pots, arranged to create spectacular container gardens, which I will share quite a bit about on this channel. Decor and creating moods have always interested me - both outside and inside - and I love to use the flowers from my garden for bouquets and to inspire other crafts that create a sense of hygge.

I just love this border and really appreciate the focus on a few of the plants in it that you’re enjoying now. That Philadelphus is quite the stunner. But Claus, you must introduce us to your adorable pup, unless you are afraid that he or she will steal the show. 😀

That's retriever behavior 😉 The dog will gently place the ball so that you can see it. Or they'll stand in front of you, wagging their tail hopefully. My sister's dog used to do that with her horse, hoping that the horse might one day throw the ball 😂 What a lucky dog to live in such beauty 💚

COMPLEMENTING AND EMPHASISING The white creamy cow parsley airey flowers that "float" above the lovely mix of perennials and bulbs knit the whole garden together and act as a calming counter foil to the exicting jumble of colours and shapes of all the flowers and foliage. The straight edges of the borders and the pond and the confinement of the space work so very well in complementing and emphasising the naturalised and balanced look you've achieved. I don't think I've seen any thing quite like this in a garden before; except that it reminds me of the energy and promise given of a wild deciduous woodland floor in the Springtime. It's unique and magical.

I have enjoyed getting to know your genius through your floral arrangements on instagram and through others sharing you via facebook. This is the first time I have seen your garden. I am in Alabama and we lost most of our trees and went from a shade garden to a sun garden after a tornado in 2019. So I am trying to use the same principles in an English or Cottage sun border in my back. I look forward to the day when I have it so filled that weeds cannot grow. This was a lovely and very helpful video because gardening is such a process and it is so important to think in terms of extended growing seasons. I love the idea of shrubs in the border. Another issue I have is deer in the garden so I am learning what plants are least desirable to them. Gardening is NOT for the faint of heart!
