Right after the start he went back to base to knock down trees because he saw the south east flank was lost, so he prepared an ambush position. What I don't understand is why he didn't use it when enemies drove up the north glacier......

Sounds like you might be pretty new, I'd recommend the Matilda at T4 and the BDR at T5. Lots of people will say to play the KV-1, but I think it's tricky to angle the armor for a new player, and the big alpha and pen of the BDR is easy to use.
