Dude. OMG. Clay Fighter. When I was a kid, I signed up for a tournament, I believe at Blockbuster, for Clay Fighter. Thinking it'd be good for honing my skills, I decided to play the game on hard. I literally got so frustrated, I think against The Blob, I cried. I fought him over and over and over, I don't know how many times, and couldn't win. It may have been the first time I felt overwhelming frustration from a video game. So, seeing Justin Wong struggle with CF too, kinda makes me feel a little validated about just how freaking hard this game can be! Thanks for the therapy session, Justin ^_^

I know the focus of this video is how hard the game is, but can we talk about how impressive it is that the sound design is as good as it is for a SNES game? like I'm genuinely surprised how uncompressed that announcer sounds. Also if I remember it right it has a full vocal theme with lyrics and everything. The only other fighting game I think that did this on the SNES is ki.

This was originally made for tournaments; it was a Blockbuster exclusive for the Blockbuster Video Game Championships in the 90s. It was really annoying because you couldn't skip the map screen like in the "normal" version between fights, which really slowed down how far you could progress in the time limit since it was unfortunately just about fighting the CPU.
@robertmanes93332 жыл бұрын
I remember playing TMNT Tournament Fighter for that Blockbuster contest, but not this.. maybe my memory is scrambled after close to 30 years
@OldManSin2 жыл бұрын
@@robertmanes9333 There was at least one year where it was split between consoles, and the SNES players played TMNT Tournament Fighter as one of the games while Genesis players did some racing game, I think, and both players played their version of NBA Jam.
@diecastdug93432 жыл бұрын
@@OldManSin SNES was Clayfighter, TMNT, and NBA Jam. Store competitions were "score the most points in x amount of time". I won my store (in Sacramento, CA) and if I remember right, the prize was my choice of one of the games and free game rentals for a year. The second round (at Marine World in Vallejo, CA) was an actual bracketed tournament of NBA Jam and I got worked in the first round. Also, for the store competitions, they used a special cartridge made for the tournament that had all 3 games on it.

I did that to my childhood friend. Since it's a charge move, you can use it to just fly across the screen back and forth, rarely leaving yourself open to damage.

Where most kids grew up in the 90s/early 2000s with Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat as their first fighting game, Clay Fighter Sculptor's Cut on the N64 was my first fighting game ever. And at the time, I didn't know it was similar to Killer Instinct until I played the original KI a decade later. This also introduced me to Earthworm Jim and Booger Man for the first time. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember hearing that Sculptor's Cut is one of the rarest N64 games of all time and I am not planning to sell my copy anytime soon

Love that you tried this game out! I played it extensively as a kid. The CPU is really ridiculous in what it is capable of on hard mode. They do almost double normal damage with their moves and in chip, they can rapid moves that take charge in a way that would make even CPU Guile from SF2 shake his head, and projectile characters can even fire off multiple projectiles, at different speeds, when the player can only have one projectile on screen at a time (except Blue Suede Goo's "Don't Be Cruel Now" move, which players can also do and always sends 4 notes out). On multiple occasions I can recall, Bonker would get so crazy with the computer rapidly giving him instructions that I heard about 5 overlapping grunts and he ended up jumping as though doing the body press, but he just idled in his stance for the entire jump arc. XD And N. Boss is really weird. Sometimes, he just kind of jumps around and doesn't do anything like he did with you this time, but others he will just camp at the other side of the screen and projectile you to death. He also has a terrifying hold that usually means a round loss if you're caught in it, but he didn't use it this time.

Clay fighters has the same mechanics as samurai Shodown. Damage you deal is based on the character’s “sweet spot” for each character, you deal 2x damage on counter attacks, and damage is like dice roll(damage is random at times). If you counter a fighter with your character’s sweet spot you can deal 50-70% damage in one hit.

This was such a hilarious video. My favorite J Wong video so far. As for the characters, I'd say once you know the game enough. That The Blob and Bad Mr Frosty are easily the best in the game. Tiny probably being third. I've found some infinites and wacky combos, traps, etc. Game is wild. Even if you take it semi seriously it's still a great game. Just broken beyond belief, only character I'd say is utter trash would be Helga. I don't think she has any redeeming qualities at all. Also, in case anyone didn't know. The motion for Blue Suede Goo's multi note fireball is the motion for a lot of those crazy SNK game supers. Crazy stuff. Maybe I should dust this game off and make a combo video for this game.
