I'd argue alot of it is precautionary reasons, especially around head and neck injuries nowadays (compared to the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s). You know, guy gets taken off and a few hours later he's out the hospital and back at practice within a week or a few weeks. But this? Ain't no precaution on this one, this looked like it hurt, bad.

Makes you wonder whether changing the boards to have some give would be a good idea. Of course we can never remove all risk from hockey, we shouldn't bubble-wrap everything, but having these guys hit ultra-hard boards going 20+ mph causes so many injuries. Maybe just an inch or two of some kind of stiff but flexible material covering the boards all around, with a tough skin on top to keep it from getting ripped up.
