55 second gun lap in that insane heat/humidity, Clayton Young is a beast! The Cougars also finished 3 in the top 4!!! Rebounding off their 1st NCAA XC Title, BYU managed to place 6 in the finals of this race, one short of having a whole cross country team in there! Incredible job boys!!! ...and hats off to legendary Coach Ed Eyestone for getting them there! #cougarnation #byudistancedynasty #byutrackandfield

G Seegrist Agreed! Although this race was before the XC title! It’s amazing that 2/3 of the guys in this 10k final graduated before the Fall XC season, and BYU STILL won Nattys. Eyestone is a legend. And that 55 second lap...Clayton had been training for that specifically for three years. Legendary work ethic.

Just a thought: the NCAA men final 10k on TRACK was at a slower pace than Kipchoge's 1:59 marathon. Isn't that crazy?
@iRunfastXC4 жыл бұрын
logicOnAbstractions FR though. There are a ton of factors that contributed to that, but it is crazy. Actually, specialized road running (like the course Kipchoge ran-flat, mostly turnless, low elevation) has the potential to be much faster than the track. Then you consider: the massive difference in conditions (58° for Kipchoge’s marathon, 95° w/88% humidity at NCAAs), perfect pacing, INSANE shoes, a perfect course, massive fanbase, 0 wind resistance (made possible by rotating pacers), and the greatest marathoner of all time, it makes sense. But still, even considering all that, Kipchoge’s 10k average of 28:23 would have been the 7th fastest run by ANY D1 collegiate runner all of last year. The man is a monster.

Clos MasMas So there was a huge thunderstorm that was going to move through and EVERY other event was moved earlier in the day. What you see are fans that left and came back hours later. Meet organizers couldn’t justify having the 10k in the blazing heat of the day; if they had moved it with the rest of the events, it would have been run in 100+ degree heat. As it is, ~87° w/90% humidity was bad enough 🔥

These guys are impressive! However, what's more impressive is a guy running faster than them while pacing for a full 26.2-mile run! It's insane that Eliud Kipchoge did a 10K in 28:20 while running towards 26 miles under 2 hours. If some find that "unfair," well, his 2018 Berlin Marathon run of 2:01:39 had a 10K split of 29:01. Regardless of which you count, both are much faster than these strong and young bucks in their early 20s! Not to mention these guys are using spikes for optimal grip.

It's a tactical race, they go out slow to set up for a fast finish. Most of these guys can go a lot faster
@barchetta575m5 жыл бұрын
So is marathon running. Just about every running event is a tactical race. And they don't start out "slow." They are going at least at 80-85%. Just look at their splits.

again a disappointing tactical race. I don't watch the Super Bowl to see both teams scrimmage for 3 quarters then step it up in last quarter. The best of these guys could probably run minute and a half to two minutes faster when going all out. Especially when it is a championship race this is very anti-climactic. Fear that distance running on the track is going to become of less and less interest to the public when we aren't seeing the very best trying their very best. If I wanna see such a strategy based competition I'll watch a chess match.
@iRunfastXC4 жыл бұрын
Eric Perry On any other night, I agree with you. But the weather that night was mid-90s with 88% humidity. It was about survival, not speed. For example, take the twins from Coastal Carolina. They decided to take the pack because it was getting slow; they fell HARD to a minute slower than their PRs set earlier that season. Rory Linkletter, former top-3 @ NCAAs, current pro, 28:12 guy was expecting to be right there again. He fell flat on his back (metaphorically). After the race, he talked about how the conditions were impossible. He had tried to go fast, but it wasn’t there. Look up and down the field, and you see guys who were minutes off their time-yet we’re absolutely dead at the finish. Yes, this turned into a tactical race at the end, but that was more a byproduct of the conditions than much else. Those who finished well trained for it. Clayton spend hours in the sauna after 16-mile days to prepare for the heat in Austin.
@Whopsie124 жыл бұрын
@@iRunfastXC Agree that the heat conditions certainly had to have been a factor here (lived in Austin for 26 years) but my larger point would be that I have seen a pattern of this over and over year after year in both men's and women's championship races in any distance of 1500 meters or more. Consistently finding Cross Country to be more interesting now because they simply don't seem to do the strategic based (tho I do know that strategy does come in to play at some level) racing thing. As I've said in other commentary streams on youtube I feel like i"m watching a race where a group of brilliant distance runners are warm-up jogging for half to 3/4 of race - then a bunch of mediocre middle distance runners or sprinters (as compared to real middle distance and sprint specialists) really hoofing it (relatively speaking) towards the end. Find myself consistently skipping through much or most of these races now because they're just not holding my attention the way they used to.
