I fly the ASK 21 IRL (you can watch a few actioncam-videos on my YT chanel). The biggest difference between sim and the real thing is the take off by winch. We have a 1200 meter cable which pulls you in one minute or so in a hight of around 400 meters. The acceleration is compareable to a sports car: from 0 to 100 km/h in under three sec.! In X-Plane the glider gets faster and faster with every meter hight. At 1200 feet (360 meter) the speed is 190 km/h! In real live its the other way around - the plane gets slower with every meter altitude. At the top you are around 90 - 100 km/h. Futhermore: The effect of the airbrakes is massive in real life. And they are fully extended pretty noisy. X-Plane needs a few more soundfiles to simulate the brakes.

Thermal height setting is where the thermals top out or stop. I normally set this to around 15,000ft with 15-18% thermals @ 500-650 fps

Thank you for this video. I couldn't find the wheel brake and you showed me on your video. A few questions: 1) are the wheel brakes on the rudder pedals? 2) When flying on down wind for landing, when do you start your turn to base and final? Do you use the spoilers for landing?

Did you know the ASK-21 can be spun inverted? The USAF did a flight test on the airplane at Edwards AFB in May 1989. We did erect and inverted spins. Hope the manufacturer has updated the flight manual as the USAF sued the manufacturer over the fact the manufacturer had not done full envelope expansion and exploration of the spin envelope.

You know what? I actually just came home from my first ever glider pilot lesson. I have done the "familiarisation" flight last week, today was my first real lesson. Did 2 fligths, 23 minutes and 25 minutes, so I now have 48 minutes behind my belt, and I was in command most of that time, the instructor basically only took off and landed (he took comands before base). Best day of my fucking existence! I can't believe I have to wait another week before I go back... How can I possibly wait a week! Thats 7 days! Thats 168 hours! An I though the lines were long at the amusement park when I was a kid... I sure hope to see you do more of those flights!

On mine, the towplane wants to veer off to the left off the assigned runway (18), a grass airfield. I fly RL sailplanes. I am still not convinced this is the best sim. I also have Condor but it too has limitations.

Yes. Very flexible in the "Cusomize" Weather Settings. Thermals, Waves, Wind Direction, Cloud levels.......

My tow plane starts pulling but never takes off. Am I missing something?

Hmm.. I can’t say I’ve troubleshooted that one. Could you have your brakes engaged?

@@clayviation No - I release the brakes and the tow plane pulls you down the runway... but never lifts off. If I release the tow rope you can watch it continue off the end of the runway.... through trees... then houses... etc. Wondering if there is some key I need to push to tell it to climb?

In real life, certainly not. In X-plane, I’m not sure if various lift rates are modeled or not.
