Thanks for the video. Really enjoyed it. Loved the FSX misson "introduction to soaring", and wanted to try out xplanes version. After watching this video was able to sore for a few hours. Even tried soaring in Minden - Tahoe and had a lot of fun.

Soaring in X-Plane is really good. And now that an issue with thermals has been corrected, we're back in business there too. Glad the video was helpful, have fun soaring.

Great video and still relevant today! X-Plane 11.52. Cheers

Thanks Kevin. Agreed, not sure I'd change all that much if I made an updated version.

Great little tutorial. I really enjoy soaring, but haven't flown X-Plane for quite awhile, and had no idea I could improve the mediocre thermal capabilities inherit in the app. However, I always flew with real weather, and was using v.10. Look forward to buying v.11, and getting started again.

There are still some issues with soaring in X-Plane but we're getting very close to having those sorted. As of a recent patch, thermals are greatly improved in X-Plane. And ridge-lift is still really well modeled. At the time I'm writing this (XP11.40) there is a small bug related to thermal strength & the amount of sink encountered outside of the thermals. That's been reported & hopefully will be addressed soon. Real weather soaring in X-Plane is still a bit of an issue. Currently thermals are not included in the real weather engine but you can load the real weather & then switch to manually configured to set up your thermals. That works fine. There's a small but growing community of sailplane sim pilots to be found over at the X-Plane forums & also on the X-Plane Gliding Facebook group. We do multiplayer gliding once in a while. Yes soaring in X-Plane is a lot of fun.

@@chrisevans-nodd Great suggestion about loading real weather, and then configuring thermal activity. Will look for those soaring forums and FB group. Thanks.

The video is older but can you tell me where I can get the glider from Videotime 0:44? Thank you very much

Thanks I didnt know you could set up ridge lift like this (similar to what I used to do in FSX) just need some of the hang glider types I had in FSX here in XPlane.... Laurie

Yes ridge-soaring is absolutely brilliant in X-Plane. If you're looking for a challenge, there's a collection of ridge-soaring tasks available at the link below. Each has specific instructions on how you should set the weather & also comes with a FMS flight plan to follow. Search for "ASK21 B21" or "ASG29 B21" for gliders that have a built in glide computer to help you navigate the task's course. Lots of fun. forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/forums/forum/488-task%EF%BB%BFs/

Here's where you can find those "B21" gliders with a glide computer for task flying... forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/category/180-gliders-and-motor-gliders/

Hi, how can I get the glider for x plane 11?

What is the x-system software you have? I have x-plane 11 and never seen it!

This video was made using X-Plane 11. I also used Little Navmap on a second monitor to show the glider's location while I fly. Some other mods I often use but didn't in this video would be X-Winch, Towplane-X & Therm-X.

Minor second comment - the two varios in that ASK-21 are clearly borked in some way, and the audio is wrong also. I'm sure we can do much better than that (as we did in FSX).

I'm no expert in variometers but I know there's as bit of a history there regarding the X-Plane ASK21. Apparently they've been through several iterations, messing around with the two instruments & the tone trying to get things right. Apparently the current version is an "improvement" & I must admit it does help when soaring but again I've not much experience with how it should work. I will say the varios in the payware Antares 20E do work differently.

Have a look at forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/60441-therm-x-thermals-enhancement-for-x-plane/ .... it is thermal enhancement and management that works with Active Sky XP and Vulkan.
