I need to go back and watch this video again. Full of good stuff. Looks like that filter shall clean up nicely, I wonder what that sludge is? Can learn alot by filter forensics. Your doing it right. I should also add, some farmers are the best at maintenance, excellent!, and others not so much, I've seen both side of the coin, but when you find a good farmer that knows his maintenance, he is a very powerful individual, full of talent, skill and knowledge, whom I love to spend time with, and will seek him out. Keep up the good work Gary, what an awesome tractor.

We just serviced our 850: drained the hydraulic fluid, flushed out the transmission with a little extra fluid, cleaned the screen, replaced the spin on filter, and used new premium trans/hydraulic fluid (NOT John Deere brand). Since there is no drain plug on the very bottom of the transmission housing, we are considering drilling one, tapping it, and installing a bolt (plug) so we can drain from the very bottom occasionally in order to remove any water that collects on the bottom.

Was having trouble with my JD 950 bucket struggling to lift the bucket or operate the PTO. After watching your video, I went out and pulled mine out and it was the same way. I cleaned it really good with a toothbrush and changed the fluid. It’s working perfectly now.

The filter screen can be made of stainless steel woven mesh, which can be repeatedly cleaned and used.

Sometimes on the rubber return lines the inner liner breaks down leaves rubber like shit in screens,, filters, find out whats in it, imo, check for soft spongy lines, replace, run a magnet, those screens not that much, replace next time not just clean, if they get dent, or mesh gets spread beyond a spec tolerance, can get shit in pump seal face im told, i assume mine will be dirty om a new used JD i just bought, i ordered the filters, 1 new return line, and the oil, when i do a complete flush next time, im going away from using JD hydralic oil, too over peiced, but some tech caution dont mix the Hygaurd, with farmstore multi fluids, so i need plan that next round. Thx

Can you tell me what the packing is and if I need to replace it when replacing the filters? It looks like seals!

So what did you do to clean it besides scraping the crap off? Did you wash it and brush it with parts cleaner? I’m going to do the same thing on my 87 1050, mostly because the implements are slow and jerky, which indicates a dirty filter. I’ve got the spin on filter, now I’m going to remove the one like you did. Thanks for posting this.

Yes, I used a brass brush and a environment friendly solvent cleaner full strength. The air hose came in pretty handy too.

The screen is on the suction side of the pump. The spin on is on the return side. Pretty sure.

Another excellent video grampy. What year is your Deere 1050? I ask because I'm sure you're aware they changed the design aswell as the power/flow and mine happens to be an 88' with the spin on filter. I use the old girl, put her real strength to the test when needed aswell as the Deere 8A backhoe, but the worst abuse our fluid face is sitting outside and collecting moisture. The quality fluids especially Deere's specific is able to absorb or otherwise deal with the moisture but only to a limit then the screens and filters clog ruining all power/function in the process. Goes for any hydraulic equipment obviously, but many guys without much experience own the little tractors so when they have problems sooner or later, it falls to you and Steeveedan on you tube here to show them what they should e done the year before to prevent the problems lol
