As someone with ADHD the fly lady system is great because executive dysfunction is real and sometimes I need an extremely detailed and structured list of things to do or my brain literally won’t let me do ANYTHING.

Flylady results in a clean house with far less time cleaning per day. It looks more chaotic on paper because it's so structured but in practice it *feels* so easy and sustainable. It's great for people who have depression, or any other mental illness, ADHD, or even just problems with perfectionism. It's also ideal for people with a busier schedule.

The difference is Flylady is very generous with her information, allows others such as Diane from Denmark, Secret Slob, etc to teach the system publicly and openly and even add their own spin, unlike the Clean Mama lady. Clean mama comes off as very impersonal and very guarded with her system. No feedback or criticism of any sort is allowed. Anyway, Flylady wins in my book and I also work crazy hours, have kids in sports and pets etc..Flylady's routines and system wins every time.

I would say that flylady is especially helpful for anyone who has any kind of dysfuntional background or depression because she is very geared towards overcoming mental handicaps and her "flywashing" emails are so good for if you need that head game help. I don't do anything else from the flylady system but the zone cleaning is an absolute game changer for me. Actually the idea that I can clean for 15 minutes (or 5, or 2) and then stop, even if the job is not fully done, is an absolute game changer for me. My house has never been cleaner and I never felt less burdened by housework. Just adapt any system you like and take from it what works for you and leave the rest!

So many ideas about FlyLady come from those who never read the original book. She never said to turtle wax the sink. An urban myth. I do wish people read the system before commenting on it. Yes, the website is horrible but the book makes it easy. Her ‘printables’ in there. Started FlyLady before Google and KZbin. Yes, when we had to drive to book stores and buy and read books. lol. Diane in Denmark did a great job explaining the zones. Secret Slob has taken another step further. Imagine spending 15 minutes a day per zone. People have the weird idea that you spend hours and hours completing task lists. Nope. 15 minutes per day is the FlyLady system. And I did turn my trashed home into a manageable place and the resentment towards other family members diminished. Housework got done during the week so we actually had weekends off to enjoy family time.
@MinimalistHome3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. People need to spend just a little time in each zone for sure. This is where she mentions the Car Wax (sorry, not turtle) www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/shine-sink/
@sheilatorres19083 жыл бұрын
I agree that 15 minutes per zone is all that’s required besides your daily routines. Only once a week you spend one full hour doing your house blessing. Check out Fly Lady Kat. She explains Fly Lady very simply.

@@MinimalistHome “If you still don’t like the way it looks, then you can try some car wax. Just know in your heart that you have cleaned it very well now, and it doesn’t have to be perfect. Our perfectionism is what got us in this situation in the first place!” Not to split hairs but that doesn’t really sound like she is telling you that you need to wax the sink. The FlyLady never uses turtle wax. She always uses glass cleaner for her sink. Marla really is a great guru for those of us who grew up in complete dysfunction or with very controlling parents who never taught us how to organize. I have the app and I'm not kidding when I say the FlyLady system changed my entire family's life. I have cooked all 3 meals every day since 2020, and always struggled to stay on top of dishes. I needed structure badly and I can't say enough how much it has helped me get my life in order. Plus, Marla is quite personable and her live streams are so encouraging.

I prefer Flylady. It's the only system that's helped me in the long run. You don't have to be so perfect about it, relax, if it doesn't get done...do it the next time you're in the zone. To me, that calms my anxiety about everything. Flylady herself is like a mother to me! She's such a kind hearted sweet person. I never do anything straight when I get up. I take time for coffee, Bible and praying, that comes first for me. Then once I wake up that's when I do the morning routine. Like I said, it's only as difficult as you want to make it.

I really have been most helped by Dana K. White, A Slob Comes Clean. I'm familiar with both systems, and I think they are very much alike. The daily 5 tasks of CM is like the daily routines of FlyLady. The weekly tasks of CM is like the Weekly Home Blessing just broken down on different days (which FlyLady says to break it down throughout the week if that works better.) The rotating tasks of CM is like the detailed zone cleaning of FlyLady. The extensive sink cleaning FLyLady recommends is only a one time thing and then you just wipe it out from then on. I think her book Sink Reflections, is very helpful. I discovered her in 2002. I like CM too, but FlyLady is my first system I implemented. It was after awhile I realized they are more alike than not. I have all the books of both. It's always fun learning about systems. 😊

I started with Flylady and got my house in order. Then I did Marie Kondo's approach to decluttering. I watched many of the other decluttering/organizing/cleaning influencers and have taken something from all of them. I do believe we are all evolving and our routines evolve also. Cleaning is different when you have small kids at home vs. being retired. Cleaning depends on disposable money, too. So, take what you like from different ideas and leave the rest behind. But I found and watched this video today and went right over to Clean Mama website to check it out. And 😳! Everything I clicked on bought up another ad to buy something!! Even when I didn't click on anything but was simply trying to read something, I just kept seeing more ads to buy this for cleaning floors or that to make your bed and this pail or that bin, etc. Honestly I was just trying to look at an example of the cleaning guide to see if I thought it may be better but as of yet I couldn't see it. Felt like I was being chased by ads. Now the actual routines may be very good if I ever decide to be brave enough to go back and try again. For now, I will stick wirh Fly Lady. It's so helpful in the morning when you're rushing to make a cup of tea or cook something to have a clear sink. It's Windex glass cleaner, just for the shine when you're done, and it is, as always, your option... Marla always advocates working along with her suggestions to establish a pattern of working, and tweaking when necessary it to make it suit your own situation. That's the nice thing about both of these systems; they are adaptable! The thing I like about Flylady is that zone cleaning list? It has stuff on it that I tend to forget otherwise! I tried Flylady back in 2002, but it didn't work for me, because I didn't know back then that I have ADHD, so I couldn't just do the tasks as she said to. Instead I jumped in and did EVERYTHING. I wore myself out. I have tried several times to start it again, same thing happened. Then last year I found The Secret Slob channel, and she had broken the system into a form that I could understand. Then in December of last year, at the age of 63, I learned that I have ADHD. That was a game changer, because I finally understood why systems never worked before. Now I use a combination of systems, and I have made phenomenal progress. Yes,I still have times when I 'hit a brick wall' and lose ground, but I have enough routines in place to prevent my losing ground. Omg I can’t thank you enough for this video. You know that term “late bloomer” , well that term was created because of me lol. Growing up, my mother, single mother, was in to drugs and alcohol mixed with undiagnosed mental illness,didn’t have the tools to teach me anything about adulting. Absolutely nothing..no cooking (except me opening a can of peas or something and eating that), budgeting was .... you can only guess, and house keeping that was non existent. So here I am at 46 years old learning adulting things. I am trying to find a cleaning routine that fits in with my life is a challenge when you don’t have the basic tools, work nursing shift work with some days ending up 16 hours. I know I need some structure, my cleaning routine always has me starting some where, but then I will walk in to another room to put something away... my add takes over and I start another room or project so my house keeping ends with a bunch of started cleaning and frustration/ tears, and Ben and Jerry. I don’t even know where or when to start. But this comparison gave me, not just hope or a light at the end of the tunnel... but relief beyond words. To hear that you use clean mama but add in some of the Fly lady was just what I needed. I was so frustrated with the idea of one or the other when both have some amazing tools to keep a home and be organized. I almost gave up hope because the structure of fly lady is what I need but my life doesn’t allow the routine that she does. After working 16 hours, I am exhausted.not to mention sometimes I have 8 hours between shifts and may have another 16 hour day following. So to say this video is a god send, well that is an understatement. I know there is a ton of the comparison videos of the two.... but the way you did this one, resonated with me and finally gave me the ability to just take a deep breath. I don’t have little ones,I’m a single empty nester. And most videos are married with little ones that I could not relate to. Thank you so much for doing this video, and giving me hope. I just may be adulting in no time, and being a rockstar at it

I have some rules I developed for myself:: 1. Don’t put it down, put it away 2. Do two things at once (a load of laundry while you dust the furniture) 3. The RULE OF ONE-every day, spray down and wipe one door of your kitchen cabinet, clean off one shelf in your refrigerator 4. Scan a room before leaving and grab anything that doesn’t belong there. Put it away. By doing these things, it makes it easier when it is time to do an actual cleaning. MAKE sure your kids understand #1. They can help.

Yours is probably the best comparison I have seen of these two. As a Fly Lady fan for years, I have tailored that system to work well for me. Had never heard of Clean Mama, but after watching your vid I know to stay with Fly Lady. The different task for different days just never works for me. If I decide this week that Tuesday is going to be laundry day, its a guarantee that Monday night, my washing machine will die, lol. Of course I am joking, but seriously, the last time I tried that kind of schedule I planned to do grocery shop on Monday. Unexpected company came so I wound up going to the store three times before Monday. Life happens! Mostly I have learned to try to stay organized and roll with whatever comes.

Love this video. I'm just getting started with cleaning routines (thank goodness I found them to help deal with my disaster house) and I prefer the Clean Mama system for just starting out. I started with Fly Lady and she is very generous with her info, but when starting if you are in huge chaos and have a focus problem it is harder to get started. I learned from Diane in Denmark who's videos really assisted me to put it all in place. Her 31 days of baby steps were very useful! I just found a planner that She's in her Apron has made for following Fly Lady System that makes it more simplified, and she gives the creator the credit for the system but loves planners so created one for ADD or ADHD it is very well done!

However, if you have time for a check list your house is already clean enough. also I realize I am clutter challenged as I have my sister and husband who are also retired and we all have a calendar of medical appointments, also they are life long pigs who never pick up after themselves . They will always get it later, like they did when home with mom. I have finally got them to leave my clean kitchen alone so I can awake to a quiet cup of coffee and my devotionals in peace. (I care for all our pets 2 dogs and 6 cats ,rescues that we never got a home first before coffee, this takes an hour)Minimalism is looking real good, I'll chuck all the stuff and then try flylady routine ,as soon as I get a minute. Thnx for tossing a drowning woman some tips I can use. Keep up the tutorials and bless us slow students!

I'm a cleaner at the moment and I noticed that people struggle with this so bad. Personally I find it works best in my home to just clean things right when they need to be cleaned. I rarely need to clean out my bathroom because we just keep it clean as we use it, my kitchen also. I vacuum once a day in my kitchen in any areas that need it and then I dust sporadically wherever I see it needs that too.

So happy to have stumbled on your site. Empty nester, working part time and renting a small condo. Not too much to cleaning but just need a schedule of something to do everyday and then monthly to keep me on track. Simple and doable. Wanting to become a minimalist as well ever since our 3 bedroom had a flood and it was the people upstairs and all of our stuff got stored and we rented a furnished condo. Pretty soon we’ll have to go thru our items and I’m ready to chuck a lot. Hoping this site and a few others will be helpful.

I would never dust, vacuum and mop on different days. Or at the very least vacuuming and mopping. Dust comes back very quickly and mopping without having vacuumed immediately prior is the best way to end up with "dust sludge". And with tiles, all that ends up in the grout, that's why it always ends up darker, looking dirty...because it is!
@MinimalistHome3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it would make total sense to do the whole bathroom at once.

@@MinimalistHome That's why I've never understood the appeal of these methods, but I guess in the US you guys must use carpet a lot more. Where I'm from, unless you have wood floors, you usually have tile, so I do the floors all at once. And if I don't have the time, I'll do the kitchen, bathroom and toilet in first priority, cause it gets much dirtier than bedrooms or the living room of course.

Great when you’re just so overwhelmed you don’t know where to start!!! But once you have that down it’s easier to “relax” into Clean Mama. I love her cleaning recipes and I did buy glass bottles and I love them!!! One in every bathroom, in the kitchen and one in my laundry room! Haha. I have also gifted the books to several younger friends and family members who were just starting out in their own. Thank you for your comparison of them. Bottom line, just start decluttering, establish some sort of routine, and be kind to yourself. No more CHAOS (FlyLady) 🥰

I will have to check out Clean Mama. I have done FlyLady off and on for years, but never stuck with the detail cleaning. I developed my own system of rooms/tasks by the day, & I’m surprised to see how many of Clean Mama’s days align with mine: Mon - bathrooms, Tue - bedrooms, Wed - living room, Thur - floors, Fri - kitchen/desk, Sat - laundry & bedding, Sun - self care. I spend about 15 min a day on my daily task in addition to daily routines of bed, dishes, & laundry. When I am home for the summers, I add in daily 15 min declutter, 15 min tidy, and 15 min of any other home care task. I am trying to get back to taking good care of my home after giving up for a few years.

Hi, like your channel and comparisons between the cleaning” systems”. As for flylady- you need to go back to the ORIGINAL cleaning system book, “We changed our lives with 3x5s” written by the “Slob Sisters” who were on Phil Donahue ( that’s how long ago they wrote their book, )which Flylady ( of today) based her systems on. I first read it on an airplane when I was flying for work and had to control myself from laughing out loud!I still use many of their systems- I think they all have to ultimately be modified to your particular lifestyle

To each their own. One has to do what works for them For me i do a quick tidy of my home before bed, the dishes are done through out the day, and the kitchen is clean. The next day is planned for. It makes life easy. My day starts with getting up, allowing the bed to air out while I use the bathroom and turn on the shower to heat up. While that is happening, I make the bed. Coming back into my fresh bedroom after showering really starts the day off. Walking into a bright, tidy, clean kitchen in the morning is wonderful. Do one load of laundry a day. I do mine at night.
