At 58 I’m not trying to become a minimalist. However I started in October. I’m doing the Swedish Death Cleaning. I’m so proud of my husband and myself. We are making great progress. The attic is going to be very hard. I have all the Fischer Price toys from myself and my kids Fischer Price. As my kids are nit ready to receive these things. No grandkids yet… I’m going to keep them. I have all the parts. These are worth a lot of money on eBay. I asked and they want them, just not in super small apartments. Since they will be in their own tub, they can deal with this after we are gone.

You will probably have grandchildren someday and you will be happy that you kept it

How fun to see all of these ladies! My house still has clutter, here and there. But I feel so much better since I've gotten rid of a lot of clutter. Yes, it makes me feel calmer.

Can also be rooted in fear if you’ve lived in poverty earlier in life. What if i fall back into poverty, need this item, but have no money to buy it? The emotion is fear, not sentiment, for some (me).

I didn’t grow up in poverty; however, I grew up with a mother who did not respect my important possessions. If it didn’t hold meaning for her, she would toss it or give it away. I went away to college and she gave away my entire vinyl record collection. At five years of age, she allowed my aunt to rip my most precious stuffed animal out of my arms and give it to my bratty cousin. This has caused me a lifetime of psychological distress…including hoarding. Oddly, now I find myself unattached to any possessions.

Love this format - hearing similar ideas explained in different ways gives everyone a place to connect to the big ideas.

I am taking the baby clothes I saved from my oldest son to give to him. He and his wife just had their first baby - a boy - and they might enjoy having these items.

I've been diligent and sticking to removing SOMETHING from the house daily since October. We will be moving mid-February, and I am terrified to be left doing all the packing and sorting at once. This is what keeps me motivated😅 Books are my "problem." I am considering a no physical book buy for 2025😢😂

"The junk drawer" makes me laugh so much😂. I never ever heard that term/ concept here in France. It seems to be such a headache!😂😂

We all have a drawer with random stuff in it. “Tiroir à bordel” here in France.

It also is called a utility drawer, for basic things like pens, scissors, tape, a screwdriver, or whatever a person feels needs to be in there!

So if you can decide what IS IMPORTANT TO OTHERS IN YOUR House for them, then can they NOW decide what of YOURS iS TRASH and CAN BE THROWEN OUT should they use a black trash bag to keep you from seeing it?
@angelicalawrence2932Күн бұрын
That’s the one thing all these people emphasize is that you are only throwing away your trash, whatever you consider it to be.

Dana's no mess method makes absolutely NO SENSE! The box method is the way to go! 1. Donate 2. Trash 3. Keep and 4. Relocate. make sure the boxes are a correct size so you can put them off to the side once finished for that decluttering time frame. while decluttering, toss items into the correct box/bag.. once your done for that time session, those boxes can be put off to the side to bring back out.. no mess! and the relocate box, take with you and put that stuff where it goes! if in that area there are things that can go, remove them and set them aside, come back through after returning all the relocate and gather the donations/trash items to to add to the trash or donate box original location. bam done! once the donation box is full, tape it up, set aside and start with a new box or line that box with a bag and reuse the same box. Same for all the bagged boxes.

But your relocate box for many people will become a doom box that gets kicked around for days or weeks. With Dana's method of taking it there now, everything will be put away and truly be no mess decluttering.
