My son moved into a new house a couple of days ago, and found an old banjo in a shed. He gave it to me. The case had wasp nests and a mouse nest in it. But the banjo might be okay if I clean it up. It is pretty dirty and funky, but I am excited to give it a go.

Most lemon oil isn't really oil from lemons, it's lemon-scented mineral oil. It works well on rosewood fretboards. Real lemon oil is acidic and should not be used on wood. It will dry it out. If you want to save some money, buy Old English Lemon Oil (lemon-scented mineral oil) instead of this Dunlop lemon oil. It's the same stuff.

a fret rocker works when you use an edge over 3 frets. as soon as you go to four or more it loses it's pivot point. That's why it has the different length sides to swap to as the fret gaps get smaller up the neck.

I use degreaser like simple green, a soft brush and quickly wipe up with a soft clean rag. I would never scrape the board, even if you have to spray the degreaser or naptha more than once, you don't leave it on that long. Finish with linseed oil and wipe off, never use lemon oil. You should clean and oil the fretboard once a year, otherwise the wood dries out.
@dannyfrailey4006
@dannyfrailey4006 8 жыл бұрын
Naptha would be the best way. It's a solvent that evaporates very quickly. Degreaser would be more of a water based chemical. It does not evaporate quick, its really harsh on porous surfaces, and could cause staining.

Depends on the climate you play in. Summer months in Texas and band practice 3-4 times a week in a non air conditioned room? Yeah, my guitar would get a lot of shit build up just from sweat (but not that bad). I changed my strings every 1-2 months so I would clean the neck every time.

I like to use a new tooth brush to clean next to the fret's and I use the Dunlop fret board conditioner on the rose wood board's I have. i haven't attempted to clean the maple one's yet like the one on my G&L Fullerton deluxe Comanche, I'd never use a razor blade on it because the finish is just spot on and if I slip then it's gonna be bad. I also don't know about the brush as it may leave mark's also in the varnish. Any suggestion's for what I should use to clean next to the fret's without marring the finish any? It always get's a good wipe down after playing with clean hand's so it really never get's any funk on it .

My technique for rosewood that I got from a friend works great! use Windex and a toothbrush. It cleans really well, removes oils and makes your frets nice and shiny. As usual you should protect your guitars finish from foreign chemicals. Razor blades are going to remove material and scratch the hell out of everything! After the Windex is dried and wiped off along with all of the grime and grease, the fretboard will be very dry and clean. Now rub in and rub off your favourite fretboard oil! it works great and you don't want to use waxes as they will build up and cause more problems.
