If you clean your strings with rubbing alcohol, here is a simple tip I use every time to protect the fretboard. Get some plastic food wrap, and tear off a small amount. Place the clear plastic wrap under your strings and then do the rubbing alcohol with a lint free towel. Keeping the rubbing alcohol off the fret board keeps it from drying out. Instead of plastic wrap you can use other protection materials like very thin plastic, cardboard, or a few plastic hotel or credit cards taped together end on end.

Phil, I remember John Cippolino saying in an old Guitar Player Magazine interview that he used Hoppes #9 nitro solvent to clean his guitar strings and that he could use the same set for months and longer. I used pinesol on a guitar that I finished myself, the body only, and it was fine...btw. if it's fine for furniture than it's fine for any urethane finished wood. It is all the same you do realize? I have used other wood cleaners as well that you would normally use on say...a dinning table. Obviously you need to really clean it. Make sure it is the right product for the right finish. If it is intended for urethane finish and you have that finish on the body, obviously it's fine. The finish I put on was quite thick. I use for cleaning, not polishing. Two completely different things. Then there is conditioning. As you said. Fast fret has been awesome on my guitar freboards and strings. I like it, but the effects don't last long. I don't clean the fretboard as often as the body as it's really not that necessary. The body is what people see, and the fretboard, in my experience, doesn't affect playability. However it can mess frets up if too dry or moist, making frets move believe it or not. But the frets are what you play on, not the board, soo...clean those often. I'm the only person I know that doesn't have the chemical reaction with different strings with smell or color. So I guess I'm lucky there that I have slightly less to worry about lol I don't think I do anything different than anyone else?

I have used iso for years to clean strings, or just change them. I know bass players that boil their strings because of the higher cost. People are sometimes obsessed with "moisturizing" their fretboards and end up using all kinds of crap, and in such quantities that leave the fretboard and neck feeling greasy. and slick. Whatever floats your boat, but I have yet to be convinced that guitars ever really need any such stuff. If a fretboard is cracking, it's because the wood was never seasoned after being cut. No amount of oil will prevent that, or repair it.

Hi Phil, why don't you recommend using WD40 for electronics (eg. Sticky pots or switches)?
@huskvarsm4 жыл бұрын
Flowout additives are ok but with those you have to put a heavy finish coat on ,this can cause runs and or solvent boil thats where the paint is so thick that it gets a skin on the top before the solvents underneath have evaporated ,and this causes tiny bubbles in the paint “it does not look good “ ,so do your homework or better still let a pro do it ,and let him know its been exposed to silicone compounds and he will wet sand the body with soda crystals in the water ,and then spirit wipe the body pre paint “ie” demineralised water mixed 50/50 with isopropyl alcohol ,to help remove the last remnants of silicone.......what silicone does is it stops fluids from flowing evenly over a surface, instead it causes fisheyes or tiny craters were the surface tension of the wax fights the flow of whatever medium you are using.

12/24/2019: Hello, I love your in-depth reviews with no sugar coating. I would love you to do a review of the Fender deluxe solid-state amp $899.99 plus taxes. here have been a lot of good reviews, but being that it is a new product, it has not been reviewed by the buyers too much. I like that it is very lightweight compared to the tube version, and sounds a lot like the tube version. But, what I do not like (and other viewers too) is that Fender did not put a headphone jack in this solid-state amp. Also, since it is a solid-state amp, I am wondering why it does not have a designated clean channel that does not start breaking up at volume #4, and stays clean maxed out volume. I understand Fender was trying to imitate the tube amp, but why not make it better with these two features? So, hopefully you will get a chance to check it out and answer questions about it. Wonder what his guitars smell like after a few weeks-and his hands for that matter. Not sure you could wash that off with your hands with soap and water and a wipe down with a silver serving spoon. I dunno, rich famous guitarist like Schon could probably get a new guitar every couple of shows when the stench became overwhelming. Guy probably still drew chicks like crazy-especially the Italian ones.

@marcseclecticstuff94974 жыл бұрын
I've been repairing electronics for 40+ years now. The only product I would recommend is Deoxit. For controls Deoxit F5 (green labeling) would be preferable, but the standard D5 (red labeling) will work also. The main difference is the F5 has more lubricant in it which will reduce wear of the resistive surface inside the pot. It is this reason I wouldn't recommend generic auto parts store contact cleaners as they don't typically contain any lubricant and will wash out what original lube may still be inside the pot leading to premature failure. I'm sure the WD40 fan boys will whine when I say stay away from it. It's useful for a few things like removing sticker residue, drying out your distributor, and for a lubricant when machining aluminum, but it can be really bad for pots as the chemicals can damage the PCB and some of the coatings they use inside pots causing them to get noisier with time. Whatever product you use, use it sparingly. You don't want to hose the thing down with any sort of cleaner. The PCB will absorb anything you spray on it and again, some of these chemicals will degrade the board over time causing problems. Like most things in life, use the proper tool for the job. Remember, the cheap comes out expensive! (Judge Millian)

Or just break it down and throw it in the dishwasher. Top rack only!

I’ve used 95% iso alcohol on a rag to clean the strings for a year now. I thought I was the only person to do such a thing.

@@therugburnz That's a waste of bourbon. Use something undrinkable.... like gin.

@@LightningDogg My guitar Carol and I drink Kentucky Bourbon. If we want something undrinkable l use Jack Daniel's.

@@therugburnz Lol I thought you were suggesting bourbon as a cleaner. I'm a scotch man but I think I could drink almost any whiskey before gin. Cheers

Now you're getting it. Although on a few occasions I did give my guitar a drink. I read in Scientific American that Stradivarius soaked certain woods in beer and may have used other Spirits in his wood curing process. I'm now a slightly wiser 55 but at 16 I thought, wow ill drink with my guitar(I had given her her name) to make her alive as I had no other friends. The fantasy of it was fun. Plus reasons. Thanx for responding
