This really works!!! Thank you for this vid. I got a great deal on a really sweet Giant hybrid only to discover that very significant rust had been concealed by a dark colored bike grease. Thought I got hood winked and I suspect the seller also thought so. This technique worked beautifully. I used a 1000 grit and the forks are now void of all rust with no pitting detectable to the touch.

@@CyberMacGyver I am reworking a bike fork again, was rusty af, did the whole thing with 300, 600, 1000p, 1500p and 3000. It shines like new, but I am thinking about spraying it now with some protective spray paint? For it not to rust anymore then I would polish it again with 3000p for the smoothness.. what paint could work well and withstand the friction???

Any scratch or damage isshu ?? With polish paper ??
@tejanpillay82457 жыл бұрын
great! look forward to trying. would a metal polish like Autosol work better? also, why do you recommend side to side motion only? cool track by the way.. and very fitting considering the part you working on! 😏
@CyberMacGyver7 жыл бұрын
Tejan Pillay thanks for dropping by. Autosol should work as its a fine paste, anything non corrosive is ok. The reason for circular rubbing motion; the shocks travel up an down, therefore any scratches/grooves will cause a microscopic 'leak' from the rubber seal at the top. A long scratch will funnel the oil out of the shocks and therefore a mess, eventually. You dont want any scratches from top to bottom. I should clarify this fact in the info section. Thanks for watching and commenting... cheers mate! 👍

Sand paper isn’t going anywhere near my bike unless it’s through god tier mechanic’s hands
@ulfrenman40123 жыл бұрын
Interesting!! But why "Rub around the circumference and not along the length"? It seems along the length would be the natural way to go since that is the direction the dampening motion will be when using the bike.
@CyberMacGyver3 жыл бұрын
the circumference is the orientation of the rubber seal (like a donut), if the strokes were lengthwise, microscopic scratches could leak oil and/or pressure up and out of the shock unit. also, its possible to get a tight seal if the diameter varies but not if there is an elongated scratch running down the strut. thanks for watching 🖖🏼 stay safe

I did as instructed and it did work for me! Thank you so much! However a few dots still remain and i tried scratching em with my fingernails but it didn’t work. What did i do wrong?
@CyberMacGyver3 жыл бұрын
if the rust flakes dont 'scratch' off, try some more spray and rub. maybe the rust has completely destroyed the chrome coating.. some grease will slow down the rust re-growth. i dont think you did anything wrong 👍🏼

Does this process leave any minimum scratch on the fork? Because mine is not rusty but have just a minimum sign on it so I don’t want to get it worse😅
@jsmu1234 Жыл бұрын
i tried removing those "minimum sign" of rust using my tower and WS-40. 1) Spray WS-40 on the rust area 2) leave it for couple of minutes and then follow by 3) rubbing the tower (with some WS-40 applied on it) on the area concerns..... keep rubbing and use your finger nails too as it fasten the removal. I did it without using the sand grit paper on "none scratch rust"
@brobinson86142 жыл бұрын
Jesus I’d be recommending a bead of silicone (let dry) at the seal or even painters masking tape or electrical tape to stop that fine grit getting into the seal area as will over time wear it out. Carefully clean off the emery grit, and then peal the silicon or tape off afterwards.

@CyberMacGyver7 жыл бұрын
hi topnotch. if those scratches are anywhere near the shocks, you may lose oil and get messy eventually. but don't worry, only if they are in the path of the rubber seals when the forks are compressed. basically, you dont want to leak oil because of deep scratches. the foil method is pretty safe tho. thanks for dropping in.. cm

Just got a serious advisory for the forks leaking oil I bought a used replacement and there is slightly pitting so not quite rusted will it still work
@CyberMacGyver7 жыл бұрын
Jason Ruckwardt pitting could be an issue if it is in the 'line of fire'..ie within the path of the shock traveling up and down. No cure for pitted shocks, a rechrome treatment costs more than a new one. Sorry for the bad news

Hi, thanks for the video, it looks pretty legit to me. I have a question though, will this work on a fork tube with pinches (smaller than the head of a pin, not sure where those are from!) that keep messing [new] seals? I am on the third one in 6 months, btw and the seals last around 5-7 weeks before a small leak appears. My theory is, the edges of the pinches, and there are several of them on the tube, are rough and will not allow seals to continue doing their job for a long time. Pls help.

I’ve done this dozens of times on my Harley and crf230l. Anything pretty much works. Crumpled up foil and water... 0000 steel wool, sandpaper... but it comes back within a month or so. How can I prevent it from coming back? I have this problem with ALL the chrome on my Harley.
@ianmcgarrigle95105 жыл бұрын
you cant stop it coming back ,,, the trick is to stop it happening in the first place ,
@CyberMacGyver5 жыл бұрын
smear some grease on the forks. the reason it happens is because there's microscopic pinholes/pits in the chrome's surface. over time the holes get wet and oxidize, eventually growing back rusty and crusty. permanent fixes; you can use a chrome polish/restorer for your shiny chrome pieces. the forks may need a re-chrome to stop it from tearing your seals apart.

sounds like the chrome has worn off. try smearing a thick grease. the areas used when riding should stay shiny and clean.
@ianmcgarrigle95105 жыл бұрын
you cant remove rust , all you have done is clean off the iron oxide the pitting in the chrome finish is still there . and sanding chrome just takes off the top layer of the surface making things worse in the long run
@CyberMacGyver5 жыл бұрын
what's your DIY fix? $1200 to get them rechromed and machined?
@DilbertMuc4 жыл бұрын
I agree. Sandpaper ist extremely hard (carbides) and removes the upper layers of atoms, both the porous iron oxide and also the chrome layer. Since the chrome layer is extremely thin, after this sandpaper treatment the fork will rust even stronger. Is it much better to use an abrasive material which removes rust but not the chrome layer. That's why the aluminum foil method is better. And WD40 is really weak in solving rust, better use a mild rust remover from the car shop. Check RJ The Bike Guy, he uses a weak acid (vinegar) to dissolve the porous iron oxide layer and then some scrubb, brass brush or aluminum foil to remove the stains. The chrome layer remains untouched.

only shallow microscopic scratches... if they are thru the outer lining and into the underlying steel, then the rust will return or the seal will leak. try smearing dense grease after sanding, that may prevent air and water getting back in. good luck and thanks for watching 👍🏼
