Because it's covered and out of sight, it's so easy to overlook cleaning the inside of the toilet tank. Worse, it's harder to clean than it looks because typical methods, like scrubbing, simply aren't enough. In this video, I show you how to clean a toilet tank (no scrubbing) and get rid of stains, germs and rust, using citric acid powder as a surface cleaner.

My toilet tank was worst, I had to have the citric acid basically sit overnight or 8 hours. But yes Citric Acid works.

Mr. HanDIYman 007; Dude (with respect), I followed the basics of what you had recommended, however; 1) I didn't empty the tank. I did place the plastic over the overflow tube and had it rubber-band to secure the seal. 2) I continued to fill the tank above the waterline at room temperature. There was a dark line of brown that circled the tank at the waterline. 3) I only used 1 cup of Citric Acid. I allowed the addition to cover from one end of the tank to the other. 4) Finally, while you had used a time of 2 hours, I let it sit while I worked a shift to let it do it's business. It was over 6 hours.... When I returned, I was thinking I had more work to do. And since you added almost another cup of Citric Acid, I thought time could be on my side. Well, TIME did the trick. The tank was totally clear and clean. Not a spot of brown, rust, or mold in sight. Not even the plastic parts had any discoloration and the ring to deal with was gone... Even now since using the Citric Acid to clean and clear the tank, the internal plumbing into the bowl has been cleaned up as well. In the past, about every three days or so, I was cleaning the bowl of mold(?) and smells too. These days, nope, less cleaning the bowl too... A side note: Many videos recommend the use of Baking Soda and Vinegar. When combined they produce foam, which looks cool. But all the combo did was neutralize each other and cancelled each other out. Baking Soda is a light alkaline verses vinegar a mild acid; all the combination did was foam, produced a little heat, and water with salt. Basic Chemistry 101, not good. Thank YOU so much for sharing your experience and wisdom, God Bless!

Disolve the citric acid in your bucket of hot water first, let it come up to room temp and then pour it in. Never pour hot water in your tank, it could cause it to crack. If you can let it soak for several hours, the better the results. I soaked mine for over 8 hours while at work.

Seems a lot easier if your mechanism is all clean and shiny like yours. Mine is filthy (recently moved in so other people's filth too...), and it's impossible to fill enough to cover the mechanism to soak.

@Gary-o2p Күн бұрын
I have a septic system and research shows it is safe... Here is what I found.... Yes, citric acid is generally safe to use with a septic system as long as you use it in normal amounts: Safe ingredients Citric acid is a biodegradable, natural ingredient that won't harm the bacteria in your septic system.

Great video! But why bother draining the tank before pouring in the citric acid? Couldn’t you just remove the lid, cover up the overflow tube, add the acid (stir/agitate), then add more water?🤷🏻‍♂️
@HanDIYman007

Hey thanks! I did it that way so the citric acid crystals are automatically mixed as i pour water in. Quicker and more convenient than bothering to find a makeshift stirrer thats long enough to reach all the way to the bottom 😉

I had much better results in just letting a cup of citric acid set overnight. Next morning sparkling clean without any scrubbing or work. I didn't even do anything other than just pouring citric acid in the tank and give it a slight stirring. That was it. Just take the top off and pour the acid in and stir for about a minute and left it alone. Tank look brand new on the inside after the first couple of flushes.

@@Julia-ez7vi Iron OUT Rust Stain Remover Powder and Out White Brite Laundry Whitener might work better for you. Try the Iron Out one. It has a stronger acid in it. Follow the directions on the back of the bottle. Just be warned that when it removes minerals... it might stink like rotting eggs. I say this incase you want to wait until a nice day to open windows.

Any acid will perform the same function as citric acid. I would have gone with “The Works” first. I think Vinegar is mentioned. Citric acid may be at least as inexpensive. ? There has to be a reason that the inside of the tank isn’t manufactured with a glaze on the porcelain. I have often wondered why they do that. I have considered spray painting the inside of the tank with an epoxy appliance finish. That seems like overkill though. I’m 62 years old. I can guarantee you that I have never suffered any Negative effects from a hard water stains on the inside of any toilet tanks. Trust me on this. I understand that it’s easy to go clean crazy but I think I’ve benefited by not giving a damn about the toilet tank. Just flush it and walk away. Toilets are one of mankind’s best inventions. Enjoy!!😊

You will have to clean the tank though. I bought my place 15 years ago and as of 3 months ago, anytime I flush, slime from the tank seeps into the bowel when it refills so I have no choice but to clean it. Have the citric acid in there now and going to wait 6 hours. I suspect I won't have to do it again for another 15 years :)

It's not as bad as using vinegar. But using either one frequently would destroy the rubber. However, it's not something that needs to be or should be done frequently.

User error, you needed to wait 1 day and 7 hours. From the top. Just kidding, but have you tried something like barkeeper's friend? It is caustic and may or may not react with rubber silicone, i dont know. But that stuff cleans pots and tubs very well. I never use it on grout though.

Looking at the tiles, It's obviously an older bathroom (probably older than you) and no matter how often you scrub those older tiles, there will always be discoloration that makes it look "dirtier" than it actually is. A simple regrouting would probably help it look less "disgusting" in your eyes. Be nicer.
