(raises hand) Just to throw this out there, that greasy ring can also be an indicator of a medical condition. Usually of the gallbladder or the pancreas. This happened to me when my gallbladder died. It took about a year for my body to adjust to life without a gallbladder, but once that pain and discomfort stopped, so did the ring. If there are no smokers in the house, then people should be asked if they get sick or feel pain after eating a greasy meal. Fatty stools can be identified by the grease ring before the BM looks fatty. The ring is the earliest indicator of the problem. My daughter has chronic pancreatitis and she gets the ring when she has a flare. Her pancreas isn't able to excrete the proper enzymes during those episodes.

I have a ToTo Sana Gloss Glazed toilet. Its instruction sheet tells me not to use any bleach, cleansers, anything abrasive, acids etc.. To use mild detergents with soft cloth or soft brushes, but it doesn't get out the environment ring. Any suggestions on removing the ring would be appreciated. Thanks. WWII

I have a different type of stain. It looks like black mold, but it's above the waterline, below the rim. Most of it doesn't scrub off with the toilet brush and cleanser. How do I get rid of this, please. I put toilet bowl gel bleach on it for the time specified on the bottle, to no avail.

You are one of the ONLY people who explains common bathroom stains so expertly well. What people need is help with the chemistry/microbiology of what and why there’s buildup in showers and toilets... when they figure that out, using the right cleaning supplies for the task becomes infinitely easier. And for ONCE... for ONCE, I found someone who didn’t insist the solution is “distilled vinegar and baking soda” 🙄🙄🙄 Might as well just try to clean everything with table salt. Thanks so much for the intelligent, organized, and knowledgeable break down! 👍🏼👍🏼

THE BEST cleaner for the toilet I have ever used is from the dollar store called The Works. I never get the toilet one, I get the tub and shower one. Put some in the bowl and let it sit for an hour is possible. A slight swoosh with the brush and its spotless. Its also amazing for the tile and tub. I use to clean homes and this is hands down the best.

Something to add about the black ring. If you have a diabetic in the house you might notice your toilet bowl having a black ring.If your diabetes is really bad it turns a blackish brown. It will go away once you clean the toilet but, like Angela said, somethings don’t flush away and stay in the bowl.

One thing to note, if you live in a hard water area that is high in calcium and magnesium but low in iron, your hard water buildup is usually whitish, not brownish-red. If you suddenly see red staining in a toilet, that might be a warning, so maybe check that there isn't something rusty in the toilet tank, like a toy. Angela, I replaced my toilet brushes with silicone ones you recommended and I do a quick clean every morning. It makes it so much easier to do an inside-out, top to bottom clean because it never gets gross enough to make me procrastinate. Thanks for helping me develop better habits, and thanks for recommending brushes that do a better job and aren't nearly so gross to deal with.

One thing to consider when selecting cleaning products, whether for the toilet or elsewhere, is what kind of sewer system you are on. If you are on a city or municipal system anything you use will be pretty diluted in the system. However, if you are on an individual septic system you have to be more careful about what you are sending down your drains because it may harm the critters that eat up the waste in your septic system. For example, if you use an acid for cleaning it will kill the good bacteria in the septic system which is a BAD thing. However, if you use something acidic in the toilet you can neutralize it in the bowl by adding something like baking soda until there is no longer a fizzing or bubbling reaction before flushing it away.

Fourth type...blue rings and streaks. This is caused by acidic water and copper pipes. You will find the blue stains on all plumbing fixtures...sinks, tubs, showers and toilets. The acidic water eats away at copper pipes VERY slowly but deposits that copper on everything it touches. As the copper oxidizes it turns that pretty shade of patina blue that you sometimes find on old pennies. The most unfortunate aspect of this is that at some later date, depending on acid levels, the copper pipes begin to have pinhole leaks in all the worst places like in the walls or under the home. IF you have blue stains, you need to install a water treatment system that uses salts...we had this problem...I think it is a softener system. It ran us somewhere in the $2000-$3000 range for our 3500 sq ft home on well water. The blue stains are incredibly hard to clean away but with the install of the system, they go away. So blue stains indicate a much bigger problem than the other stains.

Thank you. It had been a while since I properly cleaned my toilet. I had never cleaned a stain like this. Tips from your video helped me to use what I had. I used The Works and a bleach cleaner. First, I turned off the water valve after flushing. I then scrubbed the cleaners in using a Dawn toilet brush and let it sit. A couple hours later, I flushed and repeated. Each time, it became cleaner. No stain, no scratches. I'm now using this same method to clean hard stains in my shower. It's working.

I got rid of hard water stains with vinegar and a plastic scraper. It’s a slower working process, but you can leave it to soak when you leave or go to bed. I brought mine back from the brink of needing to be replaced with vinegar and sometimes baking soda. Every time I would get a plastic scraper after it. Also - every now and then I take a bath and I empty at least half of my bath water down the toilet to clear the pipes once or twice a week. I have also put the soap and warm water in and that also helps. Use enough Vinegar and that will also keep germs at bay.

All the gunk water stain have already ruined a toilet so pumice stone is not bad vs buying a new toilet and stains coming back on new toilet or dealing with chemicals. Pumice is cheap so if finish is scrapped away guess what just use cheap old pumice again on regular weekly or bi-weekly cleaning 👍

Angela, you are AWESOME!! Thank you for doing these videos. This information is invaluable. I have had issues with mold flies for years. I couldn't figure out what the source was-sink (nope), shower (nope). They were driving me CRAZY! Last night, during a bathroom break-where we have our greatest epiphanies-I was wondering why I couldn't get rid of the green/black ring in my toilet. I had had my water tested a few years ago. Water, so far, is fine. And then it hit me. I'm such a friggin IDIOT. My mom, a professional housekeeper, is rolling in her grave. The RIM!!! Like so many others, I tossed out my icky toilet brush and replaced it with that Clorox wand. And while I swish around the rim-getting all kinds of gunk-that wand is incapable of deep scrubbing, of getting up in there where the mold is hiding. I'm headed out now to get a new brush and old fashioned toilet cleaner with the goose neck. I'll still use the Wand for the bowl, but now I see how important getting up under that rim is. So many icky hiding spots in our home. Thank you for addressing the stuff no one likes to talk about. Wish me luck!!

For years I have cleaned a very large and well-appointed law firm's building twice weekly. I had no idea why every time I go, there are black rings at the water line. Now I know. Thank you. There was a lawyer who chewed a lot of tobacco - and the time I discovered that he hid a giant styrofoam cup of spit behind his monitor, open, and filled to the brim... I thank God it somehow did not spill when I pulled the rolling desk out to clean behind it!!! The men's urinal is covered in black dots, all the way up to the water inlets at the top. I wondered why it smeared, and I guess it is the greasy aspect you mentioned. Why is it way up there? Should I use straight bleach to try to kill it after the cleanser? What percent of hydrochloric acid should I buy? Lysol bowl cleaner does not always do the trick.

You can probably clean it all with powdered cleanser. I recommend Bar-Keepers Friend which is safe on porcelain but has immense scrubbing power.

Hi! 😊 Thank you! One of the methods in the video should work. If it's hard to get to holes with water in the bowl, you could try draining it so you can scrub more easily. Thank you for the knowledge! My bowl ring is a raised buildup (I can actually feel the ring). Is this hard water buildup or ? I've tried almost everything, including Soft Scub and a rough sponge + elbow grease, stopping short of a pumice stone (bad experience!) What is it and what do you suggest?! Thank you!
@AskAngelaBrown

It's possible that it is limescale or hard water stain. Zep Commercial Toilet Bowl Cleaner amzn.to/3lPgY2P or CLR amzn.to/3flfCuf would both be safe to use in a porcelain toilet bowl. Both are strong chemicals and need gloves and caution when using. (And both can be found much cheaper at Home Depot or Lowes) than the links here - I just add them so you can see what I'm talking about.

Greasy ? Never seen that which is curious I got to search that out Does the bacteria eat the Tobacco What if dogs drink toilet water Is that crazy they can't eat chocolate it's poison but toilet water just shut the lid What if the vet profession is just yanking our emotions 😂
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown Жыл бұрын
Well, toilet rings can definitely be a frustrating and unsightly problem to deal with! And I agree, the idea of a greasy ring around the toilet bowl is certainly curious. 😂 It's actually caused by a buildup of mineral deposits, dirt, and body oils that can cling to the bowl and create a yellow or brownish ring. As for the bacteria eating tobacco, I'm not quite sure what you're referring to there. While some bacteria are capable of breaking down organic materials, I'm not aware of any that specifically target tobacco. However, it's generally not a good idea to dispose of cigarette butts or tobacco products in the toilet, as they can clog pipes and cause plumbing problems. Now, when it comes to dogs drinking toilet water, it's generally not harmful to their health as long as the water is clean and free of any cleaning chemicals or other harmful substances. However, it's still a good idea to discourage this behavior and provide fresh drinking water for your furry friend. And as for chocolate being poisonous for dogs but toilet water being okay, well, it's all about the concentration of harmful substances. Chocolate contains a compound called theobromine which can be toxic to dogs in large enough quantities, while toilet water typically doesn't contain anything that could harm them in small amounts. Lastly, while I highly doubt that the veterinary profession is "yanking our emotions," it's always a good idea to do your own research and make informed decisions about your pet's health and care. Veterinarians are highly trained professionals who are dedicated to providing the best possible care for your furry friends, so it's important to work with them as a team to ensure your pet's health and well-being.

@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing this important information with our viewers! You're absolutely right-combining cleaning chemicals can have adverse effects on porcelain glaze, potentially leading to etching and damage. This damage may cause the bowl to absorb stains more easily, making it more challenging to keep clean over time. To maintain the porcelain's integrity and prevent any harm, it's crucial to avoid mixing cleaning agents and always follow the manufacturer's recommended cleaning instructions. This way, we can ensure our porcelain fixtures stay in great condition and continue to serve us well. Thanks again for your valuable input!

My toilets get a faint, but definitely noticeable, blue ring ( I don't use tank tablets). They seem to be a mineral/chemical stain. Our water company does not add any chemicals to the water. Any ideas what causes these rings, or how best to remove them?
@radicallyforjesus
@radicallyforjesus 5 жыл бұрын
I am not Angela, but we get a mineral stains AND blueish grey color in ours too. I use the hydrochloric acid-based cleaners first.("The Works") That takes off the mineral issue. That takes off most of the yuck. This needs to soak about 5 minutes and it cleans up decent. However, there is still a faint blue grey stain on the porcelain on our toilets where the water contacted. It isn't just a ring, but the whole bottom area is like that. What helps that, (during a separate cleaning) is a strong dose of bleach and letting that sit about 20 minutes. I have to use a lot, but it works. Please DO NOT MIX the two cleaners at the same time!!!! That is mega dangerous. I even flush a few times after using the acid cleaner to make sure there isn't any in there before I pour in bleach. For breathing insurance I open the window and turn on vent fans too. But the combo of the two strong chemicals (I can't emphasize enough, at separate times) helps clean out toilets sparkly white. I would rather use natural cleaners, but this is what works. Also a quick daily brushing of the toilet with no cleaner does help delay and prevent build up. But if I forget it for a couple days, it gets nasty freakishly fast. I have no idea what causes that irritating blue-grey. It is like our city is putting something odd on the water. Creeps me out to be honest.

one trick that reduces/eliminates all rings is: 1) rapidly dump a bucket of water into the bowl so that the siphonic action lowers that water level in the bowl 2) dry the bowl, especially below the water level that typically occurs after a flush 3) spray WD40, yes, that anti-rust /lubricant !!! into the bowl and cover all exposed surfaces. 4) wait an hour before flushing. the water level will return to usual level. the WD40 acts as a shield against anything that causes a ring. its effects will last a week as long as no auto-dispensing toilet chemicals are used and one flushes immediately after use (ammonia will remove it also). as a side benefit you will not get any "skid marks" 😜

Sure. Watch the flapper in the tank, you may have to replace it more frequently than you would without tabs. The flapper (the part that covers the seal) is made of rubber that can dissolve over time. If your toilet is "running" long after it's been flushed that is a sign the seal of the flapper needs replacing.

How to remove stains under the splash guard of toilet
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown Жыл бұрын
When it comes to removing stains under the splash guard of a toilet, there are a few effective methods you can try. One common approach is to start by turning off the water supply to the toilet and flushing it to drain any remaining water. Next, mix a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water or use a mild toilet cleaner. Apply the solution to the stained area and let it sit for a few minutes to loosen the stains. Then, use a toilet brush or a soft-bristle brush to scrub the area gently. For stubborn stains, you can also try using a pumice stone specifically designed for cleaning toilets. Be cautious not to scrub too hard to avoid damaging the porcelain. Finally, rinse the area with water and flush the toilet to ensure all residue is removed. Regular cleaning and maintenance can help prevent future stains from developing under the splash guard. Hope this helps.

For years I couldn’t figure out why I kept getting a ring no matter what chemical I used and I used everything known to man. I found out it was because of hard water where I moved to so nothing chemically would have worked. Now I use bath stone that I found at Bed Bath and Beyond, put on some rubber gloves, put some music on and maintain my toilet with that. Takes awhile sometimes, just have to be patient. And once that’s done, maintanence is key!!! I LOVE your channel!!! You make me want to clean things! Lol

Excellent, Angela! Am I supposed to turn off the water to the toilet, every time I clean it? Otherwise, the bar keepers friend or other cleaners get diluted. But I don’t know if it’s a good idea to keep turning the water on and off Yeah I didn’t think we had to clean our toilet in between the house cleaner. Now that we take care of our own house, without house cleaner, our toilets are really nice and clean daily

The good news about toilet brushes is that the dollar store sells them - and mother's day is coming up. So if your mom won't buy one fore every toilet - you can gift them to her. The coolest part is that if there is one at each toilet, it is less likely anyone will have to cart them through the house dripping toilet water as they go - and it's more likely they will get used more frequently with one conveniently waiting nearby each loo. 😍

Hi Angela. Love your videos! I just started "move in" cleaning of low income public housing. The condition of the toilets are sometimes horrific. When it comes to cleaning low-income public housing during move-ins, the condition of the toilets can sometimes be challenging. Since you clean them only once before new occupancy, using disposable toilet bowl scrubbing tools can be a practical solution. Consider options such as disposable toilet brushes with built-in cleaning agents or scrubbing pads, disposable toilet scrubbing pads, or disposable cleaning wands with pre-loaded cleaning solution. These tools are designed for one-time use and can be easily discarded after cleaning. Remember to prioritize hygiene and safety by wearing protective gear and following waste disposal regulations. Your efforts in maintaining the cleanliness of public housing are valuable. Best of luck with your move-in cleaning!
