Found an extremely tarnished / corroded silver ring in the ocean. I clean it in a few ways to get back down to the metal and confirm if it's silver

@@camillecrichlow8138 Yes. The joke was about the condition it was in. Also, it was Tiffany and Co. who started stamping 925 on silver, which became the standard.

What do you think tooth paste is made of ...sodium bicarbonate .. .which is baking soda ...which is rudimentarily used as a quick fix in silver polishing if u dont have those silver polishing cloths st home...

Can you do this to 24k gold plated sterling silver that oxidized without removing the gold plated layer?
@KenLord Жыл бұрын
Hard to say, I wasn't concerned with damaging this ring. It might be risky. If the ring is important to you, take it to a jeweller for cleaning.
@reo-julie8865 Жыл бұрын
Works brilliant for gold too,I always clean my gold this way!!
@KenLordАй бұрын
That's interesting, because this method actually causes a chemical reaction that removes the sulphur from the silver sulphide tarnish. Gold isn't reactive and doesn't tarnish.

I now use a ultrasound cleaner for my gold,my brother has a silver bracelet thts tarnished i tried to clean it but didnt really work,do you have any suggestions on how to clean the silver bracelet?.@KenLord
@KenLordАй бұрын
@@reo-julie8865 ultrasound gets the dirt off ... but silver tarnish is from a chemical reaction, silver sulphide bonded to the surface. You can either polish it off, which takes away some silver, or you can try to reverse the chemical reaction. That's what is happening in the glass with boiling water, aluminum foil, baking soda, and vinegar. If its important or valuable jewelry, get a jeweller to clean it. Or use a silver polish. If its junky jewelry that doesnt matter, try the chemical reaction.

When using baking soda and hot water you also need to like the bowl with aluminum foil right?
@KenLordАй бұрын
That's right, boiling water, aluminum foil, baking soda, vinegar, and a bit of salt. I'd suggest googling instructions for this, for the amounts etc.

It might not have been that old. Being in the ocean may tarnish it very well. Probably could get that way within 5-10 years just as much.
@KenLord8 ай бұрын
Yup, that's true, although this probably had the thickest tarnish I've seen in 9 years of hunting.

I've seen that if you use boiling hot water in this mix it will speed up the process

Yes, thanks for the tip, I usually pop the water in the microwave, but it doesn't stay hot very long. Maybe some time in an oven would do it.

Why the aluminium foil, baking soda and salt? Someone pls explain the chemistry behind it.
@KenLord2 ай бұрын
You'll have to Google it. But it has to do with converting the silver sulphide tarnish back into silver metal. The Aluminum picks up the Sulphur. The baking soda, vinegar, and salt facilitate the transfer.

Is it true Boiling water in a bowl with aluminum foil inside and baking soda actually removes tarnish on silver
@KenLord5 ай бұрын
Yes, but dont forget the salt too. it reverses the chemical reaction where Sulphur reacts with the silver making the tarnish. Pulls the sulphur back out. But don't expect the surface to got back to its original quality.

How you found it if silver is not magnetic
@KenLord6 ай бұрын
Metal detectors don't work based on the metal being magnetic. The detector creates an electromagnetic field that induces eddy currents in the metal target, which create their own electromagnetic fields which are picked up by the detector. Gold and copper aren't magnetic either, but are also easily detected.
