I completely understand your issues with Jason. I have a nephew named Jason, and he’s the worst. He insists he’s an Argonaut, when he clearly isn’t. I tell him, “You don’t have a ship, you don’t have a crew, and that is not a Golden Fleece, it’s just a Gold Lamé sweater you bought at Goodwill. Also, that’s not a sword, it’s a machete. Ancient soldiers had swords, swords I tell you. And when did any of the Argonauts wear a hockey mask? Never, not even one of them ever wore a hockey mask. There was no hockey in Ancient Greece. But you don’t care do you? Got to wear that damn hockey mask, every, single, day !!!” I swear, the guy is just insufferable.

"That's the consequences of overspending and keeping stuff that doesn't need to be kept." Ain't that the truth. Decluttering, feeling less guilt about throwing stuff away, and living more sustainably starts with simply acquiring less to begin with. Well put.

Agree. I went to my favourite store yesterday and although there were lots of bargains with sale items I thought to myself, do I really need this or that and ended up putting everything back I'd planned to purchase and walked out empty handed. Although it felt miserable to do this I congratulated myself afterwards as I've been decluttering for years and acquiring more just isn't in line with this action.

Speaking of babies, I’m sitting here in the hospital with my newest arrival. Apparently, I’ve watched MMC so much, my baby reacts to Mac’s voice in the same way he’s reacted to close family members he recognizes. Meanwhile, my 2yo was soothed to sleep a lot by watching along with me. So in addition to becoming a grandpa, it looks like Mac got promoted to an honorary uncle, too. Thanks, Uncle Mac! 😂

I’ve always had a problem with clutter. I used to always get distracted and forget what I was doing, lose my spot, or lose my focus on cleaning. My mom suggested that when I clean a room, I start inside the door of a room and gradually clean the area right next to the door. Then I move to the small area adjacent to the area that I just cleaned. I usually just do that and proceed kind of in a clockwise manner until I’m all the way back to the door where I started. That way every area gets cleaned and I haven’t skipped a spot. I don’t know what it is, but I can’t visualize how to organize things. Sometimes I just set things down because I don’t know where to put them. This creates clutter and causes me so much anxiety. My mom used to help me organize things. And though it took a while to organize things, and it was a “boring” activity, it was always a relief when it was done. Everything had a place and if I put everything back in its place, I could find it when I needed it. So, through my mom’s help, I guess I developed some strategies and coping mechanisms so that I can feel calm.

I have severe ADHD, I will give you 2 tips that help me out. 1) start with either a color or type of object ( I like to start with trash cause then the rest is easier to see and organize, then clothes, then dishes, then the rest) and make it into a game. then 2) have a designated "Doom Pile", a box/drawer/cabinet where those things that don't have a home go but you will remember where they are when you need them. I hope this helps!

These are some tips I found helpful from a book called "How to Keep House While Drowning". It's written by a woman with ADHD and she also made a summary audiobook for people who have trouble focusing. The full length has lots of reassuring messages about cleanliness not being a sign of morality. Tips: Divide the cleaning into categories. First, pick up all the trash. Then all the dirty dishes (don't do the dishes). Then pick up all the laundry stuff (don't do laundry). Then collect everything that has a place and put it away. Then collect everything that doesn't have a place and eventually find a place for it. It could work with your system by having a box or tub for each of those categories and picking all the things up and putting them in the appropriate tub.

Yes, agree, will be a gift to family and a great gift when baby crawls on a safe floor with no holes or splinters easier to clean cause babies put everything in their mouths including their hands after they crawl on the floor, the binky falls on the floor as well as their gum teething things. A gift to last years for toys, marks from play, the push toys with wheels ect.

@@amandak.4246Yes, for clothes , newborns grow out of them so quick you don't get to use them all. Then winter comes and the parents, grandparents and family will get more clothes. So newer windows will help the draft plus save on the heat bill so they can buy diapers and formula if not breast feeding. Again, a gift to help into the future years for shoes, winter coats, duck boots, glasses, braces, bicycle and all the future expenses, ect.

(OCD) I have been illiminating so much and donating it all from decorations to furniture to lots of clothes to homeless shelters & starting to feel better not only about myself but a home w/no clutter to where I can breathe feels so good, still work in progress, much more furniture I will be getting out & donating.

The 'Consequences of' overbuying is a real issue- over purchased clothing is a HUGE issue and even things people COULD use (think new towels, socks and undergarments, unused cosmetics, feminine hygiene and first aid supplies) could end up in landfills if there isn't a local need for those things. If you aren't in an urban area, churches and support centers will sometimes distribute donations, but not always. I feel it may be better for ones own mental health and the health of the community to get rid of items in a landfill than torture yourself caring for things that may never come to value to someone. One's mental health is worth A LOT, even if one doesn't think it does. YOU ALL MATTER, and the more FREE you all are, the more you can help others in your community!

About 15 different toolboxes, bags & tubs. My heart sunk when I saw all the lead and silver solders in one clear plastic nut container, and now I find I also have to dole out the screwdrivers again, but I forget which one went to what bag and it took years to get exactly the right sizes regularly needed for certain jobs. But I'm a girl. My house was a mess. It just looked like a lot of redundant tool pouches. 😑 Sighhh...

You do such a great service explaining hoarding disorder to the public. People always say, "I would just throw it out if i lived with a hoarder." Really, if it was that easy they would have done thst. That would seriously injure the person with the hoarding issues and break all trust, not to mention causing them to live in fear of loss. You are so empathetic. Credit yourself for being more aware them some "mental health experts." I love watching the work you do because of the care you show to the homeowners. Super helpful - and makes me feel a LOT better about the recurring boss battle that is The Clutter. Also makes me feel less bad about wanting to throw out umpteen boxes full of old clothes. They're not MY clothes: but the person who boxed them up has dropped a great deal of weight and he's never, ever going to need seventeen 5XL sweaters again... I'd like to offer up another possible option for stuff like clothes though: consignment shops. There are just about as many consignment places in my city as there are thrift stores and donation places. One other thing: Because we keep managing to collect hordes of cardboard and also lots of styrofoam boxes (same fellow that dropped weight gets refrigerated medication delivered each month) - those styrofoam boxes are GREAT in multiple ways. Completely good for storing cold stuff in of course, but they'll work as cabinets (they stack really well and are strong), and if you have flooding in your garage (or whatever), the styrofoam doesn't care about water and you can keep things lifted up and safe for a while. I do my best to get at least ONE more use out of any box we have... but it's probably time that we rented a big ol' dumpster.

This video was very helpful in understanding someone with hoarding disorder and how to go about getting rid of the overstock of items in a reasonable manner.

Oh Mack - How did you know that I needed one of your videos right now? ❤ Thank you for being you and making these videos. I have found them so helpful 🌈✨ And your humour is fecking awesome, I love it! Edited to add - I've been able to use your videos as a body double as I too clean up. It's been so amazing and makes me feel stronger about tackling All The Other Meese that appeared when I entered a AuDHD shutdown in December. Thank you so much for that, Mack ❤

When you were describing the storage room descent into chaos, I had to look around and make sure you weren't actually IN the room with me because that's exactly what happened to our spare bedroom. It used to be our sons' room, but once they moved out, we filled it with just tons of old people stuff. I'm going to listen to you clean and try to get my room usable again.

Thanks again for your helpful instruction on organising areas, and for your advice on doing this when someone has hoarding disorder etc and what their experience of it can be. It's an unfortunate fact that continual questions or suggestions or pressure about getting rid of items tends to make the person mentally jam up and then feel the need to escape and avoid those situations. I've gotten so much more cleared in my house in months of lowered pressure encouragement than I did in decades of beating myself up and nagging and intense pushing from others. While it's completely understandable when you think a person just needs to get off their bum and do some things, it really has a way of exacerbating the problem, as does just removing stuff without the person's input. I wish it wasn't this way, because it seems completely counter intuitive to people who don't understand what hoarding disorder does to a person's thinking and there's a dire need to get things done, but that's just how it works. Hopefully it'll become more widely understood in the general public, that people will look into it instead of thinking that amping up the badgering or threatening is the way to go and that anything less is just being unnecessarily soft. Your content is going a long way towards getting that information out there, and I greatly appreciate it because it will help so many people who are struggling with this. Thanks for everything you do and the way you do it, you're definitely improving lives, I know you're improving mine.

Thanks for sharing such good advice. I am currently renting a room from a friend. She has stored her fathers things in here, they are very sentimental objects to her. I will of course be very sensitive to her feelings as I help her pack up these special memories and move them into the basement and garage. I own very little myself, I am not sentimental, but I understand how much these things mean to her and her mother. Kindness and compassion go a long way towards a harmonious home. Thanks from Canada.

Really enjoy watching you organize rooms. The only thing is, over in your little garage storage area, you could get a cart to put all that cleaning stuff up off the floor and make it more mobile and easier to keep tidy. I work in kitchens and we use carts so much to safe our backs! Thank you for doing these videos. Somehow it is relaxing and I've learned a lot about organizing.

I am learning so much about my autism from you. On a recent members only you mentioned having no appetite when burned out. I have several times said, "I would love it if I only had to eat one meal a week." I remember many years I would only eat to take care of low blood sugar. Plus when I am focused on a project, stopping to eat is a huge interruption. I could go all day and never think of eating. Even now, my phone alarm reminds me to plan for supper. I guess, not remembering to eat is more ADHD.

4 minutes in and I think this is my most favourite episode to date. As an assemblage artist, I too have a tendency to let my muses roam, and end up with stray piles of scraps, miniatures, fabric and the like. Fortunately, my piles are tiny lol so it’s pretty easy to move, except for the moose. I absolutely abide by your strategy of removing all rubbish, which in my case is boxes and packaging from the things I frequently buy on eBay. I love my studio and wish for never a bigger one, so I cull my items frequently. I pray with my Jesuses, Mary and assorted Joseph’s, and truly let go of things that I know deep deep deep down inside I will never use. Very satisfying video from this side of our pond. Y’all rule. 🇬🇧
