Before there was space for my friend with dementia to move from independent living to memory care, staff at her retirement community unplugged her range and told her it was broken. That at least eliminated a major safety risk for her and her neighbors.

What's especially scary is that the stove in this video looked like a gas range. So he's going to end up either causing a fire or poisoning himself with unlit gas. 😟

You really worked a miracle here so far! I hope the family of this man will get the resources he needs for him. It isn't easy, and many times the person with dementia will fight you -- sometimes literally -- not wanting the help and intervention. (We've been through this in the past few years with a family member) If he is burning stuff accidently, he is probably at the stage where he shouldn't be living alone anymore as it's a danger to everyone living in the building if a fire gets out of control. Barbie, you're a gem to take this on so fearlessly.

Barbie I’m a firm believer that it doesn’t matter the actual state of your home environment ….clean is clean. Old or new. Hut or apartment. You may not be able to control some factors in your living environment but you can control how clean it is. So never apologize for a less than perfect pretty environment. Clean is most important! And WOW!! The grime that came off the cabinets was amazing!! Loved it

It looks as though he is receiving Meals on Wheels. It is such a valuable service for aging and homebound elderly people. Maybe if he can get some in home care that the caregiver can see that he eats these meals instead of just placing them in the refrigerator to ruin. That is a sad situation😢

All of that food in his fridge is meals on wheels. If they knew how he was living they should have reported him to senior services to get him some help. It's possible that he wouldn't let anyone in though. That is the risk - he could have burned the whole building down.

Barbie, you are amazing. To think how long he lived in these conditions. It didn’t get that way overnight. Many many elders must be visited. A phone call won’t do it, many will insist everything is fine, when in fact it’s like this. Yes, “independence” is an issue, but their safety and health comes first, not to mention neighbors’ safety. I hope his family realizes that if he’s left alone again, things will go back to where they were. What’s heartbreaking is that so many don’t have any family or close friends to check on them.

I think your oven cleaner spray tip is going to be invaluable. Ty for helping people and us too in so many ways. You and other cleaners are starting an awareness and movement for this huge need that had went in silence and embarrassment for too long. I saw in a neighboring state four church ladies are helping their community with free cleaning for those who have had difficult medical conditions, treatments and immobile recooperating operations to clean who have no one to help them. We would all like our older people to live independently for as long as they can. There comes a time when they aren't physically or mentally able to perform daily tasks. But there really needs to be a comprehensive plan for home care to ensure that elderly folks can have home care, cleaning and repair services to maintain healthy and safe conditions inside the home so it doesn't get to this point. Because the cost of nursing home care can be so expensive, it may be more cost effective to care for them at home.

It always amazes me how you just come in and tackle messes that most people would take one look and run away. On top of that your cleaning is done for so many with such sad back stories. I always hope that your generosity of free cleaning is the jump start for their better tomorrows. Thank you for what you do!
