Silencer looks like a game changer. I had an issue with the ghost notes being same level as kick drum. So i set up a side chain from the kick that ducked the snare on the kick hits. Worked well but only used it for a short section. Luckily the ghost notes didnt coincide with kick drum, it wont work as well if they do.

12:30 is something we all must accept when it comes to drum gating espeically toms... the sooner we all come at ease with this realization the better. cuz you're absolutely right. good point!!!

I use downward expansion rather than gates and manage the spill to my advantage. When you get the ratios right it sounds great , sometimes I’ll put a gate after the expander , depends on the band :-)

Exactly the video I was looking for. I saw one where they showed Silencer killing the transients.

That debleed control can definitely hurt the top end and transients if you push it too far. Since making the video, I'd say Silencer works 75-80% of the time for me. When it doesn't work, the Oxford Drum Gate is usually good, and when that doesn't work it usually means doing manual editing.

This was the video I needed tonight. Been trying to use the fab filter pro mb in expander mode and also the aix dsp multiband gate both with meh results. Gonna check all of those out you recommended.

I've had mixed results doing that kind of thing with a multiband expander. Sometimes it works really cool, but since the amount of expansion is based on the level of the signal, sometimes it doesn't open quite enough for some drummers.

@@goingto11ya I honestly never thought to do so but a very well known engineer told me he uses it and has a preset on it but then I got it, didn’t like it and found no presets of his. Lol.

For me gating is not so important on my recorded drum tracks, for me is the fundamental frequencies of the drum is important, mostly I do fundamental equalization on the close microphones for the attack points and the over hat mics do it's job so they have the right amount of sustained and the release, some times i use the ssl gate. Thank you.

can I ask what reverb you're using on these toms? sounds great. not distracting at all.

Thanks! You can ask, but I'm not completely sure I'll remember. ;) From what I can see in some of the screenshots, I'd guess it's a mixture of SuperPlate and Valhalla Vintage Verb and then maybe some Symphony 3D.
