I love this vid. Thank you SO much. This is why many good jewelers NEVER us foil backs. You should have a million hits. LOVE your explanation of surface tension. You ROCK.

Water and Rhinestone jewelry pieces are a VERY bad mix. Water will get into the setting and tarnish/discolor the foilback. If the rhinestones are glued in place ( instead of prong-set) you will cause the stones to fall out. The trick with cleaning vintage rhinestone jewelry is minimum moisture or moisture that evaporates ( such as alcohol). Start with a gentle dry cloth, move on to a q-tip dipped in alcohol and very gently dab at the surface. The pin he was working on had closed-back prong-set stones and all that water he was running over the pin is now trapped in the settings. Not good. Some people start a cleaning with a shot of compressed air but again be careful, especially with glue-set stones, not to blast the stones right out of the setting.

0:15 Yeah because you want the foil backing on the stone to lift off so they become dull, discolored glass. NOT.

Trying to fix my mom’s old pin and earring set. Most of the stones have thinned a dark color. Can Zi save them?
