The dirt under my Swisstrax floor was enough to keep up at night. I performed a thorough detail of my SQ5 over the weekend and a tremendous amount of dirt was removed from the wheel arches and undercarriage. That dirt settled on the floor of my garage underneath the Swisstrax Ribtrax tiles and today's after school project was to clean it all out. I used my new Kobalt (Lowe's brand) surface cleaner attachment and it really did the trick. This video walks viewers through each of the steps required to restore my floor to its former glory. You will be mesmerized by the transformation and I hope you will stick around till the end to witness the results of this five hour project. (Filming added a lot of time).

I wondered you process for cleaning under that flooring.. .and now I know! And you're right, it's definitely satisfying transforming something from dirty to clean. At the moment, since I don't wash in my garage, I've been mounting as much stuff to my walls and off the floors or into cabinets so when I start to see leaves or dirt build up, I just hit it with my Ego leaf blower. Much easier to blow our the garage when stuff is off the floor and put away and away from the cross-hairs of my leaf blower haha

A drain would be nice, but I think it would also be a bit tricky since I wouldn't really be able to wash the amount of dirt down that drain that the floor generates. I guess there is always a way work around those challenges. If things keep going they way they are going, I am going to have a trench/catch basin installed. That's a little ways down the road though. Okay so I love the floor but I think the problem I have with it is that its not really a protective layer for the concrete. The reason why people do epoxy is because it actually creates a layer of protection between the porous concrete and the dirt/water that gets tracked into the garage. Would there not still be the concern that salt dirt etc will eat away at your concrete over time?
@RADGarage
@RADGarage Жыл бұрын
Concrete is more durable than people give it credit for. Water isn't going to damage your pad, but the salt will so that's why I seal my floor every year. The salt eats away at the epoxy as well, and I have yet to see an epoxy style floor endure consecutive Canadian winters. There's no perfect solution, but Swisstrax works very well for me. Thanks for watching.

I have a small "three car" garage (about 19x27') and you've given me so many ideas of how to outfit my garage and maximize space. Quick question for you that I don't recall you addressing...how do you deal with humidity in your garage from washing indoors in the winter? Do you have a dehumidifier?
@RADGarage
@RADGarage 4 жыл бұрын
That's awesome. I started sharing my garage story back in 2012 which seems like eons ago. I don't have humidity issues at all. In the winter, I don't use a pressure washer in the garage because that turns into a fog storm real quick. I mostly perform rinseless washes on cold winter nights. The alpine air here is super dry so I have been "lucky" that way.

Hey Rick! Have you considered using a squeegee after pressure washing the concrete floor? I find it picks up the dirt better and it dries a lot faster.
@RADGarage
@RADGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Toni. I actually did squeegee the floor off camera while my camera battery was charging. I find it extremely satisfying. Although, that said, with the big door open, that garage dries in a matter of 5-10 minutes. It's hard to believe, but it is true. The thin, dry alpine air is actually helpful in that regard.

It never makes it to the street. There is a thin gap between the garage floor and the driveway, but because the floor sort of slows the flow of water, the water that makes its way though the edge pieces usually evaporates. I am going to have an actual trench drain installed so all water will drain to a large capacity catch basin that I will have to manual bail out or pump the water out of. Stay tuned!

Rick buddy , your garage is every car enthusiast’s dream garage. I notice you do a lot, if not all your washes indoors. Under your flooring, is your concrete treated or coated with anything special? Any concerns about water causing more/bigger cracks? Especially in the winter? I’m sure your heaters help in that aspect though.
@RADGarage
@RADGarage 3 жыл бұрын
You kind of summed it all up in your question. I do lay a coat of concrete sealer down every summer which helps protect the concrete slab from absorbing water and soaps. The floor is approaching 10 years old and is in fantastic condition. The only cracks I have are very normal for concrete up here where we have a constant freeze/thaw cycle. Some of my neighbors who don't seal their concrete have lots of cracking at the front of their pad where it meets the driveway. Water gets in little cracks and expands in teh winter causing all kinds of mayhem. I do my best to keep that part of the floor free from snow and ice in the winter and it has really helped. It's a constant battle and if it isn't an obsession like it is with me, the elements do take their toll.

The average person around here very rarely (if ever) rinses out the floor of their garage in the winter. Trust me, I'm the only one who does it on my block and I always get the stares. The benefit for me, is that I don't have to walk around in all that crud on a daily basis like everyone else. If you go this route, you do need to weigh several factors. I'm more than happy to continue the conversation to help you make the decision that is best for you and your situation. Just hit me up at radgarageyyc@gmail.com and we can chat!

I’m a bit late to finding this video, but I recently just moved to the Midwest (northern Indiana) and looking to go the swisstrax route for my garage. How is your slab holding up with the winter run off? Do you seal the concrete in the garage?
@RADGarage
@RADGarage Жыл бұрын
I do seal the garage floor every couple years. This protects it from the salt and debris it sees all winter long. I'm very pleased with how my garage slab has aged. It is 12 years old and look brand new except for the stress cracks that are par for the course up here with our weather fluctuations.

Will a jack stand or a 3tonne trolley jack with the weight of the vehicle on the Swiss track damage them. Thanks!
@RADGarage
@RADGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, floor jacks and jack stands are not going to work without digging into the tiles. That can be easily remedied by using a piece of rubber or wood as protection. I have a QuickJack that does a great job of evenly distributing the weight of a vehicle, but the concentrated pressure of a jack or jack stand will cause damage to the tiles unless protected like I said. I hope that helps.

@RADGarage
@RADGarage 4 жыл бұрын
With that much mud on the floor, you HAVE to remove the floor. Spraying it would lead to muddy overspray getting everywhere and the various channels on the bottom of the tiles would allow the dirt to cling and hide. I have done a few videos on quick cleans, but the only way to really clean the floor is to remove the floor. That's ten years of experience talking.

Our 3 car garage has a floor drain in the middle and the floor is generously pitched to feed the drain. Do you think this floor will conform to that??
@RADGarage
@RADGarage Жыл бұрын
It will depend on the pitch of the floor to the drain. You may have an area that “floats” above the drain. At 16” square, the Ribtrax tiles are not going to conform to a steeper grade. I hope that makes sense. I have a 6’ section that drops down an inch to feed my channel drain and the tiles do a pretty good job of following the pitch. It really is a thing you’d have to just take a leap of faith with.

What is the benefit of using the Swiss trax over a quality high end epoxy floor coating?? Is it just the cushiness and dirt hiding capabilities vs being able to sweep and mop a coating?
@RADGarage
@RADGarage 4 жыл бұрын
I have about a dozen reasons Swisstrax is a better choice in my garage than epoxy. One of these days, I will list them all but the number one reason is that the garage floors up here are wet almost year round and the Swisstrax allows my to work on a dry surface year-round. It looks better than those cheesy flakes and it comes in all kind of colours and designs. It's cheaper and it lasts forever unlike an epoxy coat that begins deteriorating the second you lay it down. It makes for a more comfortable surface to walk on. Like you said, it also helps hide dirt and debris that I would otherwise have to mop/sweep/vacuum. It does come with a maintenance commitment but it is worth it in my opinion for the reasons I have listed here.

I have drains on each side of my two car garage. Obviously has a little slope down towards each. How do you think that would effect flooring like this?
@RADGarage
@RADGarage Жыл бұрын
The tile floor will adapt to the slope of the floor, to an extent. I have a 1" drop from both sides to my channel drain. I am lucky in the fact that where the flat portion of the floor begins to angle down to the drain, the tiles don't connect. This is rather hard to explain, but basically because the tiles aren't connecting with each other where the pitch begins, I don't have any issues with the tiles disconnecting when that part of the floor is walked or driven on. My 1" drop happens in a short span of about 3 feet so it's a bit extreme. If your change in pitch is less extreme, I don't see how you would have any problems laying down a Swisstrax floor. I hope that makes sense.

Would pine needles get stuck in the swisstrax? Pine needles blow onto our driveway and are tracked into our garage via tires and foot traffic (blower works great to remove pine needles). However, when rain and sleet falls, our cars dry in our garage but the floor becomes wet. I'd like to try Swisstrax to keep the foot traffic surface dry...but if pine needles get trapped, it will be a pointless soggy mess. What's your take on this?

If pine needles currently invade your garage, you’ll find them building up in the “vents” of the tiles or falling straight through to the floor. I get some garden debris in my garage, but when I do my periodic clean like featured in this video, it all just rinses out no problem.

My garage is approaching ten years old and I haven't seen a single sign of moisture-related damage. In the winter, a lot of guck and grime gets tracked into the garage by the car, but the heater does a great job of drying everything up and then I just wait for my opportunity to clean it out once the weather is mild. 1 cm is NOT 6 inches! It is 0,39 inches. So if you had 6 inches of dirt, it would be 15,25 cm!

Nice video, but this to be is just a horribly designed floor - to have completely uninstall the floor anytime you want to clean it is insane to me. Why not a solid interlocking floor? I'm researching floors and was told to look at this brand, but my first thought was why is it open and how do you clean it? Now I know! Yikes!

Works for me and thousands of others, but not for all. Good luck in your search for the perfect garage floor.

@@RADGarage How often are you taking it apart to do this?
@RADGarage

@@GB-yv3uv It totally depends on the weather. Freezing winter temps mean I can’t take the floor out onto the driveway. If we get a nice warm spell, it is possible. Probably 4-5 times per year.

Depends on the situation. I’ve had it for over a decade and it has allowed me to maximize my enjoyment of my garage. Feel free to check out my other videos showcasing how Swisstrax has been the right choice for me. kzbin.info/aero/PLBkcWYR7ZEzhsA1c8tAWi-kWVIeJ4abtF&si=lITdHFvJGkTf7wIG

What a hassle to lift up the floor and clean underneath it. I am sure the floors are a haven for spiders to live. Not for me that for sure!
