Most of it will end up in Africa, because thrift stores can't sell all of it and they sift through it all. 85% will end up in Africa in a land fill, no joke. There are plenty of documentaries on that. Very disturbing and sad. Please give to shelters next time people!

Bailey I think (at least in my area) they only trash the stuff that’s really bad (ripped, stained, etc) that they can’t sell. Like my Goodwills move stuff from one store to another after a while to see if it sells there and then it goes to the outlet where it’s bought by pound. Maybe I just have a lot of goodwills around me so they’re able to do that? But I haven’t heard of a lot of it going to the landfill

hey, selling is a great option! sometimes charity shops get overwelmed with donations and have to throw some away. selling means you are sure it will go to a home and not a landfill :)

This is true, however when thrift stores choose what to throw out it’s usually older/ more tattered clothes or clothes that were cheaper quality to begin with. Mia’s clothes are mostly high quality expensive pieces (like reformation jeans) and likely wouldn’t be thrown out by the thrift store. Also a huge reason people don’t sell is honestly because of all the work! Imagine Mia having to take photos of and listing 12 bags of clothing?? If she doesn’t need/want the money then from her standpoint it’s a lot of wasted effort.

back in december I went back to my parents house where I had most of my clothes still, and decide to get rid of everything.. I donate about 6 bags and threw away 3 of them. my mum was in tears (but I think it was because looking at the empty closet gave her the realization than I was gone for good). I only kept the very bare essential I need for when I'm there on vacation (I live in London and my family is in Italy). it honestly felt so good.

@@mochicat8464 it depends on in which country you live I guess. I live in the netherlands and I saw a documentery on how it is done here. Only the best clothes that are donated are sold here in second hand shops. The worst are being recycled and everything else is being shipped to Africa where buyers buy these clothes in bulk. The people there are less and less satisfied with the quality because due to fast fashion the items simply don't last that long. I was amazed that their favourite brand was Zara. And they also alter some clothes before they sell these. But they don't like that their own clothingindustry has vanished because of this system and the fact that the clothes are made of lesser quality. Probably they will buy these bulks of clothing less and less. I do agree wit wut are that her clothes are problably ging to get sold and won't end up in landfill.

Some tips: do one category at a time. Or have someone help you and don't touch the clothing yourself at all. Or use the Konmari method and choose what to keep instead of what to get rid of.
