Clean with me while I do a deep clean on the Ikea detolf enclosure for the mice.... for the last time. I discuss why I'm switching to a different enclosure, give you updates on the mice and talk about my plans with them in the future!

If you still want to keep using the hemp bedding - you could layer hemp bedding and hay to make it more “stable” for burrowing and building tunnels in the bedding. I use that with my hamster and it works great

I'm using just paper strips mixed with wood bedding and it seems to do the job, they made a thorough tunnel network, it never happened with bedding alone.

I feel so special being a member and knowing things that other people don’t ahaha. The Linmon cage is great especially for height and my mice are loving it! Does anybody have any idea for thing to hanger in the cage, I have hanging ropes and ladders but I don’t really now what else to put, any idea would be nice! Purple Unicorn there are also some natural seagrass hammocks made for reptiles that might be worth checking out! They are not as cozy as the fleece ones, but they are good textures and they make quite long ones

Hey emi! I use hemp bedding for my mice and to help maximise its burrowing potential, mixing it with a bit of cardboard bedding, shredded paper and hay; works an absolute treat! My mice are able to hold their extensive burrow systems with it and its so great to watch

I understand your reasons against the detolf... I had similar problems and then took the detolf apart and put it together in a different way so I have two times the floorspace. Then I build an attachment on top so I have a higher enclosure... works well for me but takes some time to diy

I put my mouse's wheel on a high wooden platform with a flat stone to hold it in place. They live in the borneo xl cage from amazon de with narrow bars and a good deep tray. It measures 119 x 59cm and is 57cm high.

i prefer the kaytee clean and cosy white, but ive also used the natural. it seemed to hold my hamsters tunnels and burrows really well they both really loved it. the white is softer and fluffier than the natural.

I have a detolf split by wood in two halves for two hamsters. They have loads of room in there. My cage is wall mounted above my bed on a massive string shelf. I Highly recommend!

i had my detolf 5 or so years and a few moves. luckily was able to keep it whole when we moved. maybe try putting the wheels upside down on the lid? ive seen people do that before and used zip ties. i miss my mice so much, they are so loving

I would add some Timothy hay or aspen bedding to the clean and cozy bedding. That helps hold the tunnels they make

I’m not an expert at all and don’t own mice but I was thinking maybe you could get the new mice once the new cage is done so that all of the mice are being introduced to the cage at the same time so none of the well be so territorial over there cage. Again I have no idea if this works but thought I would comment it

Some people put a tank topper (or whatever it is called) on top of the detolf. Essentially a DIY cage on top of the detolf to extend the height and give better opportunity to hang things

I have only been a fan of your channel for a bit. I love animals and making sure all oddballs get proper care. I have a beautiful and happy bearded baby dragon and a scorpion. I started watching your channel and I thought that I might like a mouse or rat (I used to own a rat in the past) locally I was looking for more things to properly house a rat and prep for it . Top tip for buying commercial paper bedding, buy in bulk off small pet select. Their bedding is virtually the same as clean and cosy and when you buy the massive bags, it's way cheaper and lasts for months. Mix in cheaper hemp bedding, shredded toilet paper, wooden cat litter and timothy hay and you've got yourself a budget bedding that holds burrows extremely well.

If I were to be able to get an ikea detolf, either for hamsters or mice at any point, I would probably want to try and make one of those tall lids that are a lot higher then the top of the tank. It just seems like any issue I personally would have with it would be solved by a tall lid. Only problem is me and my dad are not good at things like that

The chance of the wheel being toppled is why I wouldn’t go for something like the DeTolf. I use a detachable wheel that fixes to the bars of the cage for ease of use by the hamsters.

Hey Emiology I love your videos and I’m so happy for you that you’re making a new cage, I can’t wait to see you! However I do have a question. I have three mice and one of them is particularly well...... fat. I’m a little worried about her at first I thought she was pregnant but we got in contact with the breader that she came from and she said that she wasn’t. i’ve had her for quite a while too so she couldn’t have been pregnant without having babies. The breeder did say that her particular breed of mouse will get a little bit bigger than the rest but she’s pretty chunky! Lol. I was wondering maybe if I overfed her but I didn’t know you could overfeed mice. Because if I always thought that they would feed themselves. If you know anything about this please help me out.

I recommend ‘premium pet select 178l’ bedding if you’re looking for different burrowing substrates In my opinion it’s better then kaytee as it’s softer; better at holding burrows and absorbent. It’s also cheaper, at £40 for 178l opposite to the £25 for 85l that I’d normally pay for kaytee

Random question, I'm getting the pet planet rat and ferret cage (Same as yours) and I was wondering if you could tell me the dimensions of the tray you made to hold the bedding in? Like the little clear tray at the bottom of your cage if that makes sense. You don't have to go through all the trouble of measuring it again it's only if you remember. Ty! :)

Maybe chuck a couple of treats inside them so they have to at least set their two front feet onto the things? It'll create a positive association and get them used to touching the items.

I don't know what it's like where you live but rescue organizations in my area are always looking for more enclosures so they can rescue more animals. if no one wants your old cage I'd recommend asking rescue organizations if they would want it.

My hamster just escaped for the second time. We’ve gone through two enclosures with him. The first one, he bent the bars. The second one, he chewed through the plastic. I really wish I could have a new enclosure. One that he won’t destroy. My mom won’t allow me to get any new enclosures unless he destroys them. We bought the enclosure before we got him, and she doesn’t want to have to buy another for my hamster. I wish I had a car, so I could go and buy him a proper enclosure. This helped cool me down.

@The Pigeon Weirdo I understand what you mean. My mother is very strict and chooses to ignore proper hamster care. She had hamsters growing up and she kept multiple of them in a cage similar to critter trails. I think her hamsters had babies.

Emiology I have a question! So I know you use hemp bedding and I want to use it too with with my hamster. I was wondering where do you get your bedding from???

Your mice are so cute 😳😳😳 however i used a wooden wheel for mine and tbh they just kinda chewed all over it, peed all over it and it didn't last as long as a plastic one! I personally don't recommend wooden wheels for mice, they chew on them, pee on them, and bury them a lot more than plastic ones (i think they're amazing for hamsters though)

I think you can put plastikote on the wheel to protect it from pee? I've never tried a wooden wheel but have seen somebody do it :)
