Ouch, this hurt. [ 20.7 G ] Total space from 3531 files would be freed in the distfiles directory , including 9 old versions of chomium at 700 MB, 9 old version of firefox at 300MB each, and 6 old NVIDIA driver packaged at 130 MB each.

btw i just randomly stumbled upon my own comment, i got very surprised. i am using gentoo now. a suckless gentoo openrc build, and now im trying to clean the mess i did after applying the gentoo LTO overlay. im pretty happy with gentoo.

Gentoo rocks! Ditched Arch in favor of Gentoo, and not looking back. My system is »fairly« minimal right now with Xorg, dwm, and st. Some 800 packages installed. 😎 Edit: Running on OpenRC, of course.

I don't know why this has so many likes, after world updates, it is recommended to remove obsolete packages with emerge --depclean. Refer to `man emerge` for more information.

personally I use ln -s to keep one repository of portage over nfs, one distfiles folder over nfs, and am using ramfs on huge ram machines and a combination of zram/zswap on memory hungry systems to run portage on. I mean the temporary directory where you unarch/compile things. /ramfs. again, use directly ramfs on ram phat systems, zram, with new xz algo :) Anyway, the point is to leveredge network resources over local ones when it comes to other things that other computers need. Like the portage tree. or distfiles. Theres an overhead when you use nfs over ssd, meaning a network storage vs a local very fast storage, but in this case, with portage, the gains are minimal, and the wear& tear over the ssd are hard. therefor i avoid scratching any ssd for any updates. thats why they either happen in ram or in some network location.
