I got one of these out of the trash today. I had never even heard of these pans before! It definitely needs to be cleaned and seasoned.

I have my mother's cold handle skillet that belonged to her mother. It always went camping with us when I was a kid. Agree with you about how to clean and season one. My other favorite is a 6 inch iron skillet. I can use it as a personal plate, turn it over and use the bottom as a cutting surface, or use it as a club if needed.

I searched for a few years before coming across one of the smaller cold handle pans, beat to hell but it was $5. A couple years later found an identical pan in fantastic shape for $16. A while back discovered a surplus place that had NEW pans, made for WW2, still in cosmoline! For $30!! Bought one, loved it, went to order another and the price had doubled 😂😢. They are hard to find, getting super expensive, but so nice. And NOW I know where the Corporal got his pan…since he refuses to answer on his channel! 😂

I sell at a flea market here in Arizona old stuff is getting harder and harder to find 😆 nice pan good video come on over to Arizona and I'll take u to a town that is literally a flea market lol it used to have up to 3 million people a day stop through it was a blast selling ... I couldn't buy enough stuff to sell people bring diesel truck loads to sell used to anyways 😥 this country man I'm getting scared 😨 for my kids and grand baby's....

Well I wish I'd have known you were in West Virginia because that's where I live and we could have met somewhere but oh well. I have one like that I don't think it's a cold handle but it's just as good as one I had to do close to the same thing that you did to that when it wasn't quite as bad. My mother had one and after I took off across country she let me take it and I cooked with that thing until the handle burnt off of it yes it definitely did burn right off of it but I had to cook over a fire most of the time I've never ever seen one do that since then I suppose I didn't know how to cook over a fire I guess but it did good while I had it. Those are fantastic ones and you got a great one there. Glad you showed people how to clean and season those things. Thanks for the video sorry we missed each other. Keep ye powder dry

I used to watch my grandmother clean cooking ware with wood ash and Brillo pads then re season it. I think the wood ash created a lye type soap. Anyway that did the trick.

I have watched Sean Kelly use a Cold Handle skillet a few times and also seen Blackie Thomas use one over on his channel, but until today on your video I just realized that they were steel and not cast iron. Well. Nothing like seasoning cast iron. I've never seasoned a steel skillet before. Seasoning a cast iron skillet requires multiple trips through my outdoor grill at extremely high heat with the thinest coat of oil possible . . . and never lard. There are tons of skillet seasoning methods, but go to the Cornbread Festival in South Pittsburg, Tennessee . . . there are tons of "how-to" booths that show you how to care for your cast iron, how to season it, how to _re-season_ it should it become necessary. And they have every accessory you can imagine for cast iron cooking. _Steel_ , on the other hand is foreign to me. Thanks for taking the time to show how to do this, Dave. I'd have never known.

Send us an Etsy link! I soaked my CH in citric acid and water overnight; it didn't have a good-looking patina. Started over... when I used my toaster oven, it got oiled and put in. No special skillet-only bakes! Worked well!

I have a National #40 and a Savory #2 that belonged to my great grandparents. Always seen them in my great aunts cupboard but never knew they were cold steel. Now I wanna clean them up and put them back into service. The Savory is stamped "Savory Fry Pan" on the handle. Trying to research it to put a date range to it but not finding anything helpful. Any ideas on a date range?

My wire almost crap herself when I paid $200 for Griswold #2 at garage sale and had a friend sitting driveway waiting to buy it for $1200 by the time we got home .You could here the wheels a spinning in her head about the other 85 sitting down stairs . Griswold's are nice but over priced I like the Birmingham Stove and Range skillets and older Lodge to use also with Wagner's . You can never have to much cooking iron and steel .

Hi Dave, I have what I guess would be a cold handle clone? it has a plain handle. I bought it about 1998 when doing Civil War reenacting, just dug it out and suprisingly after all these years it's still in good shape and seasoning is still good! When I find old skillets like that, I like to bead blast them down to bare metal and just start them over again like brand new.

He was using hydrogenated lard, it won't go rancid ever. Even the lard I render myself at home has a shelf life of months on end, probably even longer. I use it on my Old Hickory knives and it never goes rancid.
