Hey Molly - great video. Most folks don’t realize when you’re dealing with food product that is for human consumption there are a whole different set of rules for cleanliness as opposed to commercial food stuffs like commercial corn and such. Still is amazing to me how the potatoes come out of the ground covered in dirt but by the time y’all bag em up they look spotless. Looking at what you just showed us I can understand why you have to clean it up so often and that it is a never ending process. I absolutely love how Bessy never lets you or Shane out of her sight. Such a good dog! Have a great week y’all!
@BellsFarming4 ай бұрын
Thank you Edward! I always love reading your comments. You are absolutely right about the rules for human food. Luckily potatoes are one of the crops that is not consumed raw (like lettuce or carrots) those farms have to follow even stricter food safety rules. Then you have the packaging and processing plants. Their facilities for packaging is at the highest level of food safety. I read some of the guidelines for those facilities and was like “ boy I’m glad we only do potatoes and corn! “ thank you as always for watching.

Thanks! We do the same and blow off then pressure wash at the end of harvest ground work for the fall then repair work in the winter , I don’t know if you go thru GAP inspections but we do during harvest they come out inspect all the diggers and transfer equipment, went thru it last year boss came out after it was done. I asked how did we do, he said you got ginger, what!? My machine is good! No you got gigged. What! Yeah your ear rings, I said she had ear rings!
@BellsFarming4 ай бұрын
Hahah yes we do harmonized plus GAP inspections annually. The check list is long! I do all the food safety stuff on our farm. FYI let your safety person know to change their policy about earrings. as long as your policy says you can have earrings, you can have them😜 points get taken off if you “ aren’t following what your policy says” so make your policy fit your operation. Also depending on the auditor.. sometime they will work with you. Thank you so much for the support! We really appreciate it!

Farm and Ranch life Molly is always the same work just never ends it is always there. and sadly most people who live in cities have no idea what you and Shane and rest of family go though to feed them city folk. I grew up on a 170,000 acre livestock ranch in central South Dakota. We were always weeks behind it seemed. And priorities always changed too. haying first of June gathering of firewood, fixing and putting in new fence, riding fence lines, gathering cattle, horses, corrals cleaning out barns cleaning out old debris from hay corrals building new ones in pasture and then if you had time,... hahah go gather them downed trees,... bring them back and cut into pieces and then split into firewood. And that was them things..... we still had everyday morning chores, feed, gather eggs, change bedding or add new for beds, animals? feed, change water, bring in coal, fill fireboxes,... oh how the lists go on and on.... and if you rode your horse above all grandpa said you rub him or her down give them fresh hay, and oats, make sure they have water... fresh and clean.... always he said show respect to the animals and treat them like you would want to be treated. All this.... before your priority day starts hahaha My respects to you,.... Shane and Bell Farms.

Very thankful your channel exists. Many consumers have no idea what it takes to operate a grower/packer business. It's a shame many family farms are dwindling due to labor costs, fuel, chemicals...etc.Kudos to you and your family for keeping the family farm going!! Have you ever considered cutting floor drains in to capture most of the water rather than sucking it up with the floor machine?
@BellsFarming4 ай бұрын
Yes it is a sad thing so many family farms are not extending to the next generation. The floor…. If we could go back in time and placed 10 floor drains in the packing house I stead of 2 that would have helped a lot. We have thought about doing what you suggested for part of the floor. Half of the red equipment gets moved away during the warmer months the and we use that space for packing beans. So we need a regular floor in that part. Always a trick thing to deal with water in the winter. Thank you very much for watching and suggestions ideas!
