To all the people complaining, just imagine if you had the power to skip to [what you feel is] the relevant section of the video! The guy is old school and has a fairly relaxed approach, but he is a pro and the knowledge he is imparting is beneficial. Instead of watching like 10 different videos, just watch this one and if you need to, skip to the relevant part. And *stop moaning!*

This video was thoroughly helpful. I just skipped to the bits I needed to know about. Its a shame about all the immature comments. If people are not interested in cleaning vinyl or in a lot of cases, vinyl, why would they watch the video? It's sad they waste their lives watching videos on subject matter they don't care about, just to vent their irrelevant negative feelings that they wouldn't even have if they weren't watching videos on subject matter they don't care about. Sort your lives out and chase your hobbies/passions and hopefully find enough fulfilment to stop the mindless spew of shit that are most of the comments on this video.

Feels like i've just done a post-grade. Thank you so much my friend! It's certain to improve my experience, and i've been collecting and doing all the trend for over 20 years now. Amazing how you can learn each day. I know that most people won't even have the ears to hear the difference (neither to watch something over 2mins, as we can see - remember: never read the comments), but you can actually hear the difference whenever you got a "scratch" or just the stylus bumping on that deeply encrusted dirt. Lucky that i can now have a cheap, honest and reasonably effective cleaning machine, made here in Brazil. Thanks again, for helping me conclude my research. My records deserve it. ;-)

Thank you for making the video and taking the time to detail out your thinking, experience, and guidance on this topic. For TL:DR types see bullet points at the end. Many are simply searching for bullet-point recommendations in life, whereas others are looking for the details that lead to a recommendations. There are plenty of videos out there with simple, short, bullet-point recommendations on subjects if you fall into the TL:DR category. Experience will teach you that there is often a price to pay for not conducting your research. Sometimes it’s a minor item, and sometimes it’s a major annoyance that makes you regret a purchase. Take your time, do your research, listen to a number of experts, use critical thinking to analyze and question the information they are proving. Feedback and advice is a gift. Even if you disagree with it, view it as that as someone spent their time to share their experiences and mistakes so that you could spend less of your time making them. TL:DR: 1. Person yells at internet commenters for being impatient. 2. Sometimes you need a deep dive to see the criteria decisions are based upon. 3. You’re watching a video on vinyl cleaning, at least have enough self-awareness that all things vinyl will err on the side of pedantic. 4. Life is complicated.

Thanks for taking the time to make the video. I use a Spin Clean and while it does a good job, I do agree that it's pretty much worth what it costs. It's labor intensive and using the "diapers" to dry has always seemed to me to be a way of putting some lint back onto the record. BUT it's very effective on really dirty and smoke caked records from clubs and has saved more than a few LPs from the scrap heap. The only criticism I have (and I have the same issue with most LP cleaning videos) is that I never get to hear a "before and after" of a clean vs dirty record. I wold love to hear, for example, a dirty thrift store record go through the Spin Clean, then see how much more it improves when put through the Rolls Royce of cleaners. Not sure if it can be done with youtube audio quality though. Maybe if the LP in question was something with relatively quiet acoustic music that would be able to showcase the pops and clicks?

To the critics. I have been collecting vinyl records since I was ten when my Uncle Dodi gave me his PYE auto changer, if I had been given this information in 1969 my record collection would be worth considerably more. Top recommendation is to keep your discs clean in the first place, the warning about mat dust is a gem, and do not leave them on the platter for days on end, even with the lid down. Vinyl discs are the closest mankind will ever come to creating a black hole, nothing can escape their pull. Seriously though, anybody with an interest in the replay of vinyl records should give the OL website a visit, the information available there is priceless. And no I don't work for them.

I use Spin Clean on almost all of my used records. I have not had one problem and my records are super clean. Under $100 too. I think about the only machine that can beat it is an ultrasonic one and they sell for about $4000. I really never understood the purpose of all of those expensive, complex, noisy machines that use chemicals, brushes, and vacuums.

@esroberto1

...and are worlds better. Hence, the price. Look, for those with $100 turntables with $40 cartridges, SpinClean is great, so knock yourselves out. But any manufacturer of quality cartridges will tell you the cantilever suspension is NOT something you want to get wet, and any liquid will leave residue when it dries (drying with a cloth just leaves lint and other contaminants behind AND doesn't dry the bottom of the groove). This is all common knowledge. But a Nitty Gritty machine wets the bottom of the groove, loosens contaminants, and then sucks away ALL liquid and moisture, and contaminants along with it, leaving a pristine groove that is completely dry. For those of us who spend more on a certain pressing of a special recording than some of you spend on your whole stereo system, nothing less than a vacuum machine is even remotely acceptable. Next.

Wood glue is the only thing you need - a ‘face mask peel’ for your record. It’s made from ‘polyvinyl’ and when peeling it off, will remove all detritus from deep in the grooves. Some will have negative comments, which makes sense as cheap wood glue solution doesn’t help sell $5000 cleaning units.

Thanks for your very interesting video. I live in Argentina (pardon my english). Living in here , it's not easy (and too expensive nowadays, say more than the double it costs in USA) to import a Loricraft ,or another machine of that level. I´m actually thinking to buy a cleaning machine designed locally, similar to the one you show in the video just before the Loricraft . I have three questions, if you don't mind : 1) what kind/material of brush (one that i may get here) i should use when pouring the fluid onto the record? The man selling the machine in the You-Tube video seems to use a natural bristle brush. What's your opinion? 2) I´'ve just bought a Pfanstiehl carbon fiber brush, but I understand this one is to use just "dry" , AFTER the fluid-cleaning and BEFORE playing the record, in order to remove static electricity and some dust collected at the last moment. Is that true? Do you recommend it after the cleaning? and the last one: 3) what kind/material of brush (and fluid) i should use to clean my stylus?Any particular method? Your answers would be VERY valuable to me, as it was your video .Thanks again. I don't discard to buy a Loricraft some day ! John.

Thank you! I have been curious about how the Loricraft machine operates. I have also wondered about the cross contamination issue with the spin clean. What are your thoughts of the George Merrill cleaning device. It is a rudimentary appliance, hand operated, and intended to use with your choice of solution and a tap water rinse. I think that used with distilled water instead, it would best the Spin Clean for those with limited resources and a small collection. I have read many positive remarks of the L'Art Du Son cleaning fluid. I am surprised that you did not mention enzymatic fluids as a particular topic.

Never had a problem by using a cartridge set to it's correct tracking force Set too low it will burn the grooves of the records because of excessive stylus vibration, hence mistracking. Tracking force too high will just cause excessive wear and bottoming of the stylus cantilever. (ouch!!) Used mc's and mm cartridges and still enjoying LP's from the 60's Only used velvet brushes and dust bugs back in the day. Will now only use carbon fibre brushes with very light pressures to clean the groooves In the old days when Shure V15 cartridges ruled there was never a problem as they could track at 1 gram morning noon or night , causing no damage to the grooves of the record. Never had a problem with clicks or pops

Also in the 70`s 80, we had very good Cassette tape decks that I would Tape my first Listening to and thus only play the Original LP to enjoy it Vinyl level and when Cassette got worn or Damaged, we would re tape them, oh and Occasionally I would use my anti static gun on em. One needs to keep in mind let this video was produced by a company that sells the products that are featured in the video. I agree that vacuum cleaning is the gold standard, although there are many cleaning machines available that work perfectly well some are reasonably priced. I doubt that anyone would be able to tell one commercial record cleaning fluid from another in a blind listening test, and I have used the L'Art Du Son fluid, as well as about a dozen other brands over the last 35 years. The idea that records are coated in with a film of mold release agent is a myth that was started by the nitty gritty company back in the early 1980s when they were promoting a product called "First". There is no evidence that any mold release agent has ever been used in the production of records. The record stampers have never been sprayed with any mold release agent, although some have said the mold release is Incorporated in the vinyl formula, I doubt that this would leave any kind of removable film on the record.
@lepet42
@lepet42 3 жыл бұрын
I work in the plastics injection moulding industry. I hate to advise but mould (or mold to our American friends) release is real i.e. it is not a myth. It is not sprayed onto the mould (although mould release sprays do exist for problematic tools) it is part of the vinyl formulation and migrates to the surface to allow the record to be ejected from the press easily. Without it records would end up sticking in the press tool.

Origin Live Origin Live I'm already critisized by some for being too lengthy so cannot include everything but as said to another listener. The forces quoted are industry accepted and calculated by those who do the maths. These forces are generated dynamically due to the extreme accelerations demanded - think in terms of a stylus tip moving back and forth at up to 30,000 times per second. When ice skaters traverse the ice the ice melts momentarily under the skate but the ring remains fairly smooth

For all non audiofile vinyl lovers: Buy 2 (yes 2) Knosti cleaning sets (no I have no commercial interest here). Buy 98% clean alcohol, 100% clean demineralized water and synthetic non acid based dishwashing soap. Now use 40% alcohol and 60% demineralized water and only 1 drop! of the soap together to make 1 liter of your cleaning fluid. Don't clean for too long (just go round 2-3 time with some speed both ways and then brush 1x both ways with shorter moves, all done in just over 1 minute) and clean the record in the second set of knosti with only demineralized water to remove all residuals. Store your record well and dust them before washing.

when cleaning with the spin clean the small amount of contaminants go into a large amount of fluid contaminating it only slightly when cleaning using a small amount of fluid on top of the record as with a vpi cleaner does not the solution on top of the record become more highly contaminated before it is vacuumed off. I use the spin clean and then I vacuum the record when wet with a record doctor V to great results. I change the water after 10 records or less which is distilled water spin clean soap and a good splash of distilled white vinega.r

Your methods are going to give you good results. The vaccuum method is debatable on some machines as it all depends on how powerfull the local suction is which is why we like the Loricraft. The only contaminate to worry about in maybe higher concentrations is mould release agent so maybe clean a record twice the first time but after this I don't see an issue.

Don't buy a turntable that is $100 or less if you want a vinyl to last long. Basically the needles on allot of turn tables that are under $100 or less will destroy your vinyl's grooves after a very few listens. Always clean your records if you see allot of dust and use one of the right methods and don't press too hard if you use a brush. that will make it last longer with a good record player. Also you should get a really good set of speakers for your record player. Also you should make sure your record player isn't really dusty every time you listen to a vinyl record. Also you should keep your vinyl in the case when your not listening. Also you should not let your vinyl be stored in and store your vinyl records vertically . With these tips you can make you keep your vinyl records sounding great and not have pops or clicks and last basically forever unless you harm the vinyl badly on accident or purpose. I know owning good stuff for vinyl may cost you allot of money, but if you are in to good sounding vinyl its worth saving your money to get good stuff for vinyl. Been using a SpinClean and compressed air for many years, haven't found anything better. When i find an exceptionally dirty one i pre-soak them with a strong enzyme cleaner like Osage Audio #15 In all honesty it seems to work better than the VPI 16.5 i sold.

I know this video is 5 years old already but I had a question. What about warped records? Can those expensive vacuum machines deal with them? I am surprised at what ability my turntable and a decent cartridge can follow moderate warps and curious about cleaning some of those nearly irreplaceable copies. Thanks

Hi Bill, the Loricraft tracks warped records no problem. A good tonearm should also be able to cope with moderate warps. Same principle.

Hmm..... 'if you use washing detergent on a car after a few washes it makes the paint look dull" wouldn't that be the harsh detergent removing the wax and allowing the surface of the paint to come into contact with the air thereby oxidizing the paintwork? It is my understanding that car paint restorers use washing detergents to strip car wax before applying paint treatment. Thats it it removes the wax but does not directly damage the paint.
@CurvedSlightly
@CurvedSlightly 8 жыл бұрын
+Portusound The combination of the cloth/sponge dirt/dust/grit makes the paint dull, not the detergent. The detergent is there to break the water tension and lift the shit to the surface, twat.

Oh, please. At that concentration, it's not going to strip the paint. Even paint stripper at that concentration won't strip the paint, twat.

Prepsol is what we use , Its a grease and Wax remover completely safe on just about everything, but not plastic!!!!!!!! Dishwashing liquid with not hurt 2 pac or the old Acrylic paint jobs ,but often detergents have silicon in them which causes reactions if you need to respray the car at any stage. Silicon is a spay painters nightmare and we use chemical drops in the gun or add to the pot to stop it reacting .Its also found in many polishes.

I'm 45 and grew up listening and using vinyl in the 1970s and 80s, but I realise after all these years I was doing things incorrectly. I've read your blog page about cleaning methods, but many of the products are very expensive here in England (UK). So I wondered if I could adapt your preferred method and do this; make a one litre spray bottle solution of distilled water 80%, isopropyl alcohol 20% and about 12 drops of wetting agent. After spraying that on, I could then use your idea of the garden pressure water sprayer to rinse off the cleaning solution with plain distilled water. Finally leave to dry on a kitchen dish rack. Would I definitely need to vacuum the residual water from the record, or is leaving to dry sufficient? Also should I avoid using my felt dust brush or cloth?

Probably one of the most silly things record factories did was use inner paper sleeves! Not only did they rot and brake down over time,, it also eats the plastic sleeve. You will also find that mites love it !So when collecting vintage records as I do its important to not use those paper inner sleeves and just pop a new plastic on

i worked in a labotratory to see if animals for human comsumption have deseases that might sptread and destroy entire flocks from the most consumed meat especies ,the material after diferent processes of knowing if this or that flock is contaminated with a certain desease ,the material used in diferent types of detection but in bacterial culture the glass equipment was always cleaned in ultra-sonic bath machines ,but loud as hell one couldn´t be in the same room while they worked , my question here is if this machines have any similarity with the ones used to clean records, because it seems not ,so there it starts a doubt of a very expensive machine looking cheap not like ours but similar in size or even less depending on the material we need to clean to future bacterial cultures ,makes me wonder about those vinyl cleaning machines , i also lived in a region with no humidity in the air and very hot, i used to listen in a pioneer from 74 ,records from the 60´s and early 70´s not one had noises ,only used to clean each record before it was played as the stylus with a mini crush, that i still use today ,and working in a laboratory i can watch the tip of the stylus like if it was 2 meters high so dirt if it´s there one would see it but the amount of dirt they show on some videos it´s like using a stylus for 4 years and never clean a record or a nedle, so having more than 80 records of my colection all with dried white mould ,i´m still waiting to buy or not a machine to clean them , this talking of perfectelly stored records , but when buying a new house from the 30´s i didn´t notice that the wall behind the furnitutre with shelfs was a source of humidity, when i notice a humidity smell all records were dirtied with this white mould, around 13 years ago i´m watchingf videos about cleaning records and never saw one that i had not doubts of their cleaning capacities

He lost his authority with me when he described the Spin-clean Record machine. Not only did he omit information which is addressed in the machine's instructions, but he implied that the machine is flawed. Stating that the dirt will increasingly build up in the water with each cleaning. Then he goes on to PLUG (promote) a solution that he uses. I have a Spin-Clean machine, and it serves a very valuable function to me. I don't use it for daily cleaning, but it is awesome for an initial cleaning of old lps. I had lps which I was planing on replacing because I believed they were damaged, not dirty. The Spin-clean worked so well I realized what I thought was damage was really old dirt! I was amazed at how well it did a deep cleaning. In regards to the solution, the Spin-clean comes with its own solution, which is designed to pull the dirt down to the bottom of the reservoir, and it works well. The manufacture states that one batch, about a cap full, of solution is good for 25 lps. As for the whole solution thing, he's right about iso-propyl alcohol. It leave a film that one can see, I'm not sure why he didn't just say that. And if this wasn't just another infomercial he would have told you to use Denatured Alcohol, which is what I use daily with my Nity-Grity vacuum machine. I started playing and caring for records when I was about 10 or 11 years old, that was in 1971. So, rest assured that I've clean a few lps in my day, when I tell you this guy is just another dick selling snake oil.

Not for normal record collectors its for proper Audiophiles and rich ones at that!!WOW!! i dont think i will ever watch another vinyl cleaning video ever again, I'm exhausted!! I learnt alot, most of which will never apply to me unless i win the lottery, I mean the guy was comparing a £500 cartridge to a £2000(4 yr ago prices) and a £4500 cleaning machine. I have just paid £36 for a AT95EX(2018) and its the most i have ever paid for a cartridge so i am obviously not as rich as this guy but i do take care of my records, I always handle them by the edges and the label, Just like the origin guy does in this video, At the moment i use a felt brush to remove surface dust and a silicone roller thingy which gets into and cleans the grooves but i am seriously considering getting a spin clean system, just to put my records through it about once a year so they are at least starting from a reasonably good place.And most people i know think that's over the top. P.S. Don't let a DJ see this video they will think this guy is crazy.

Spin Clean works, no contamination. I do not wipe dry, instead I air dry, which is possible when Spin Clean is filled with distilled water. Air dry eliminates possibility for static pops completely. I place record on turntable and use a carbon fiber brush to remove dust which may have settled on record. I clean stylus with stylus brush and then play the record. No, snap, crackle, or pop unless the record is defective, or damaged. If I encounter a pop or two which is specific to a point on a new record, I send the record back to retailer for a refund. At any rate, I enjoyed the video, except your assumption about contamination in use of the Spin Clean, since you presented no evidence for contamination by any measure.
