Love your channel Frank! As a record collector from the 60's, I've learned the best way to clean a record is the simplest and cheapest. Plain rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth. NEVER use water. It contains chemicals and minerals that no matter how pure, will leave a residue. I've always had good results.

I give my records a wet cleaning using spin clean record wash and let them dry. Next, I use a roller with adhesive that picks up micro particles that the wet cleaning left behind; then I use a record cleaning brush on the records before I play them.

I have a similar tacky roller, but use it a bit differently. First, I hand-spin the record/platter a few revolutions while holding the carbon fiber brush stationary on the record, which creates a little 'row' of dust. I then roll the tacky roller across the line of dust (from center to edge), which lifts the line of dust off the vinyl. Btw, I'm sure this tacky roller is like mine, where you can rinse it under warm water periodically to clean it off and freshen the tackiness. There is no actual adhesive on the roller, UNLIKE a lint roller for clothes where you peel strips of tape off.

A good wet clean periodically to get rid of oils and dirt. The gel roller I use every time I play the LP. I just put it on the platter and use the roller slowly turning the platter and going back and forth with the roller. Really good at lifting the everyday dust that it picks up. Not a replacement for a deep clean but I find it is an indispensable part of the cleaning experience.

I used many different record cleaning kits over the years with various average results. Then I bit the bullet and purchased an Okki Nokki wet and vacuum record cleaner. Since then I’ve never looked back. The results are amazing and the sound improvement is as if the record was just pressed. Worth the investment if you buy second hand vinyl and like to hear and see results.

Hey Frank. I use my trusty old Discwasher brush. I have run out of D4 fluid though. For deep clean I swear by the Knosti Disco Antistatic spin cleancleaner. It's neat and effective and there's no need to mix the solution or bother with microfiber cloths to dry the records. It comes with a drying rack and records are dry usually within 10-15 minutes. Also the solution can be filter recycled back into the bottle as it comes with a filter. The results are usually pretty good and has removed the occasional pops & fixed mysterious record skips. Cheers mate.

Generally I just use a damp microfibre cloth for a clean before play. The dampness helps pick up any dust or hairs and also stops any static issues. I've been doing it that way for years without any problems. I have a Spin Clean, but that's more for really dirty second hand records.

Hey Frank. Never tried these rollers. My ritual is similar to yours. Every new or used record I get, I wet clean in the Spin Clean tank, wipe off the excess water with the included towels and let the record air dry briefly on a foldable bamboo dish drying rack. After that, I get rid of the crappy white paper sleeves and put the clean record in a Sleeve City Diskeeper 2.0 inner. If the original inner was a lyric or photo sleeve, it goes inside the outer jacket and the whole thing goes in an outer plastic sleeve. On plays after this I’m kind of torn. I bought a carbon fiber brush and also have an original Discwasher D4 brush with the wooden handle that I’m using Groovewasher G2 fluid with as refills for the no longer available good D4 fluid.(not that crappy RCA D4 fluid). I’m still trying to decide which one (carbon fiber or wet D4 brush) is better and gets rid of more surface noise. Seems to be a toss up at this point but the D4 with G2 fluid does get rid of fingerprints or smudges better than the carbon dry brush.

I use a vinyl vac with my own cleaning fluid mix that is very effective on all records new and used.rinse with distilled water. This method is all I ever need. Like you, I always wet clean all of my records when I first get them. I have had very good luck with the Vinyl Vac using the MoFi deep cleaning record wash. For cleaning before each play, I have been trying several different wet (sprays) and brushes, always looking for the next best thing. I have seen other record roller type cleaning systems for a lot more than $40, so I may just have to give this a try, Also, did it come with directions on how to clean the roller after multiple uses? Thanks again and keep up the good work

I’ve tried pretty much every method of cleaning my vinyl, and have owned a couple of products like that. The fact that they don’t get down inside the grooves is the issue I have with them, but I do find them great for cleaning my Herbies record mat, and I assume it’d work for most mats minus I’d think felt. For a deep clean, I prefer to use a spin clean first, and then put the record on my vacuum based RCM to suck out whatever’s left in the grooves. I learned that method from Ron Beaudry’s channel. Before that, I only used my RCM. I find Ron’s way much more effective.

I always wondered how long the roller would last/stay tacky. For my own records, I will "deep clean" the _dirty_ stuff (dusty, grimy used records with "potential") exclusively with wood glue. I've gone through several brands, trying which suits me best, pouring a bit and then applying with my finger. It's so satisfying to see how spotless records come out when I peel it off. And then I maintain with the antistatic brush and keeping them in antistatic inner sleeves.

Every album entering my collection gets a wash with my Clearaudio Smart Matrix, a nice new MoFi sleeve in and out and before spinning I use the Ursa Major brush, a nice heavy brush with 7 lines of hair. For my styles I use the Flux Hifi Sonic which is a electronic vibration cleaner. My results are that any noise being left during spinning coming from bad material being used during pressing. Most records are dead silent so I am happy with my way.

I have a record roller called the Record Pal from Big Fudge that was $14.95 by itself. It seems close to maybe a 3" roller. While it does work very well, it's certainly not my primary cleaning source. I prefer a Spin Clean type system like yourself, but I find myself using my record roller when I just don't have time to wet clean, and there seems to be more gunk on my record than wish to try and clean with my usual velvet brush/spray bottle method. Like you said, it's just another helpful tool in the vinyl cleaning arsenal.

Hello Frank, thanks for the review, definitely some value in the roller I think. I currently use a home made mix distilled water, alcohol and distilled white vinegar but feel I need to upgrade. I place the record on an old turntable pad, spray it and use a paint pad for a deep clean. The pad follows the grooves very well. Then microfiber cloths to dry. I also use the carbon fiber anti static, dishwasher brush and a zerodust for the stylus. I am ready to upgrade to a Spin Clean system because my collection has grown and I have a backlog of cleaning to do. I think it will help my process. I did see a video about a vinyl cleaning concentrate called TergiKleen.. basically you add drops to distilled water. Have you ever used it and what are your thoughts? Thanks.

I recently bought a Vinyl Buddy and then I found this video. Generally I find a combination of my carbon fiber brush and the Vinyl Buddy to be pretty good for mildly dirty or dusty records. I never have a problem with dusty records. Back in the 70's I started using a Pixall roller. It's like sticky masking tape and then I've used Permostat on them. Spray on the vinyl, allow to evaporate and buff. In the process the static electricity is neutralised permanently. These days I don't bother treating new records, just store them with the old ones and the collective anti static ensures cleanliness. I can leave records on a bed, out of their sleeves and any specks just fall off. Old records often crackle but a lot of that is just the static electricity. After treatment some seemingly unlistenable records sound like they're mint. During the first play some old records track poorly because the stylus rakes dirt out of the groove so I have to clean the stylus with alcohol and a stylus brush. I have old supplies but I believe all these products are basically still available

I clean all my records (1) with an ultrasonic cleaner, (2) vac dry them, (3)use microfiber for final wipe (4) Use Milti Zerostat to remove staic (5) use Audioquest carbon brush to clean as much dust off before placing in new anti-static sleeve. I have a smaller version of one of these rollers I purchased on ebay probably for $2 and i find that I use it because it actually picks up more dust particles off of a clean record even better than a carbon fiber brush and a Milit Zerostat - I have to admit, that as someone who's ultra picky about the frequency range of my ultrasonic cleaner, the chemical composition of my surfactant, etc. I'm not 100% convinced that no residue are left behind on the vinyl surface as a result of this/these products - I often wear a magnifying glass when cleaning my records and have yet to see/discern any residue left behind by the roller - keeping finger crossed!

Great video as usual, Frank. I bought a used Nagaoka rolling record cleaner (made in Japan) from an eBay seller many years ago for roughly $25, but the tackiness of the roller had somewhat diminished due to its age (vintage). I've bought similar tacky (sticky) rollers at Dollarama and other dollar stores for lint/pet hair removal from fabrics for $2 to $3 that operate on the same principle, but what I like about that particular record roller you demonstrated is the 4 inch width which helps to clean records faster and the quality looks a bit better than what I've found at dollar stores in terms of better, sturdier construction. However, I should try the cross-rolling method you demonstrated with my rollers to see if they achieve a similar result, particularly, as you said, for a quick clean (not necessarily the deepest clean) of a record about to be played. Considering that a record brush and a stylus cleaner can cost about $15 each or $20 to $25 as a set, that 4-piece kit is probably a decent value. :)

Am I the only one that does this? I shine an LED flashlight on a record to see how much dust is really on it, both before and after cleaning. The first time I did this on a record that looks fine to the naked eye my reaction was "OMG". It was truly an eye opener. These roller types of cleaners do a pretty good job, but eventually the stickiness wears off.
@mjanovec
@mjanovec 3 жыл бұрын
I would have liked to see you try washing off the roller and see how much stickiness it retained for subsequent cleanings. The true test of this roller is to see how well it holds up over multiple cleaning and washing cycles. If it loses its stickiness after a few washing cycles, it’s not worth the price.

ould you recommend using it in conjunction with the Spin0Clean or just use the roller? Actually, givenn some of the grime on our older records (mostly inherited) I think I know the answer!

The roller would just be for light surface cleans. I would recommend something like the Spin Clean for deep cleans, for sure. Frank

So after using the roller on a record and seeing all the stuff it picks up, how do you clean the roller itself? It seems to me that after a few cleans without cleaning the roller, it would just be putting all that gunk onto subsequent records rather than cleaning them off.

it's so hard to clean though, i struggle to take all the dust off. I don't want to be using too hot of water to weaken the adhesive and are brushing it while in the water?

How do you clean the record roller? Do you wash it with soap and water after each use?
@HoomanR17
@HoomanR17 3 жыл бұрын
I have a different brand but similar and just wash it with warm water after each use where it becomes clear that it can't pick-up/stick any longer. Let it air dry till next time I need to use it and its back to being sticky.. almost like a lint roller you would use on cloths.
@7JANEWAY
@7JANEWAY 3 жыл бұрын
My question is, is this really better than a lint roller that’s also 4 inches wide and is on Amazon for about $4? As far as the stylus brush, I use the one that came with my Ortofon 2m Blue. It’s not as fancy, but it does the job. And you can find cloths at the dollar store that will do just fine. So, considering all of this, is this a good value? The only way that someone will prove to me that this is a good value is to compare it side by side with the products that I mentioned above, and see which works better (or just the same, as I suspect). The vinyl hobby can get quite expensive, and not everyone can afford specialty products like this. This is especially true when there are cheaper options that can do a comparable job. But I appreciate you taking the time to review this, Frank. This way we become educated about what’s out there, without having to shell out money to find out. Keep up the good work!!!

For sound tests on KZbin, try classical music which seldom has copyright problems. $50 dollar value LOL maybe 50 cents value and made in China.

I found that a sticky roller is very useful to remove tiny dust particles. *But watch out with solid debris like sand/grime, it makes the roller act like sandpaper* In some cases it can also smears out dirt... So it's effectiveness depends heavily on the type of dust/dirt you want to clean. Btw, nice new Technics, are you going to review it any time soon? 😉

I have the roller and I personally don’t like it. Maybe it’s the quality of mine but whenever I wash the dust off it, let it dry completely and clean a record, it leaves a bunch of this residue so I stopped! Also, there is a fair use policy to an extent. You’re allowed to play about 3 seconds of music, any longer than that results in a copyright strike by whoever owns the song. I think that’s how it works. Techmoan has played copyrighted music for a tiny bit in some of his videos and those videos are fine.

It's 10 seconds I'm sure...surely not as short as 3. I seem to remember using one of these rollers too, and then my stylus had a gummy substance afterwards. Maybe the quality of mine but it was a brand name...big fudge? I think.

The only thing i'm weary about with those is, if there is a spec of hard dust particle or debris that gets on the roller and as the roller is spinning with that hard dust particle or debris...would cause it to scratch across the surface of the record while it is stuck to the roller. Use a Zerostat 3 Milty gun for the static issues. I go counter clockwise with the start at 3PM and ending at 6PM. I don't like wet record cleaners. The label can get messed up, it leaves water residue and dried soap residue, it will leave the record sounding like a bowl of Rice Krispies cereal. I use the Zerostat 3 Milty gun for static, air compressor for dust and debris and a non abrasive cd wipe cloth (from the Memorex cd cleaner kit) to wipe off fingerprints (from use lp's) and the residues from wet record cleaners from records bought used on Discogs, Ebay, etc. I don't like to use a brush on a record (i never own one either) with the fear of it lightly scratching the record.
