You talked about forgiving yourself. I have had a rollercoaster of a life for the past 6 years since my husband died, my daughter got married, I had 2 major stays in the hospital, and I had to evacuate from a wildfire. I have things from my husband and our 2 mothers to declutter while dealing with 2 types of cancer and all the medical appointments to go with them. I really like just setting a timer to focus on some stuff unless I'm cleaning. Then, I find a cleaning video to listen to while I do that job I don't like. I clean one room every day and take 2 days off. Saturday and Sunday. I'm retired and sick with autoimmune diseases. I hate clutter and dirt. My sister-in-law taught me this. It really helps. I wipe everything down every night in the kitchen and dining area. Vacuum every other day in there. My craft room/office is always a mess. Lol. So, I'm working on it now because of the cold weather I can't get out. Donating a lot of craft stuff because I don't do anymore. Cleaned out a huge kitchen cabinet and got rid of a ton of stuff. It felt great. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and doing this video. I shared with friends ❤😊

Set a timer. My mom really hated cleaning house but with 3 kids ... Usually Saturday morning (or during the week during summer breaks) we 'played' Beat The Clock! We all got together and 10 min a room we all hit the floor running and usually had the room clean prior to the timer 'dinging' ... then we each had 15 min for our bedrooms. As an adult, I still find 15 min a room will get it back in shape by myself. Habits really do pay off.

I’ve been moving toward minimalism in my house and discovered how much easier it is to clean when surfaces don’t have a lot of stuff on them. Also, I’ve been doing a weekly decluttering task to stay on top of stuff that accumulates in drawers, cabinets, and closets. I’ve been doing this for 3 years and still find things to donate or trash. I do a ‘power tidy’ at night before bed, which just means I put things back where they belong. I really like waking up to a tidy house. My non-negotiables are bed made every morning and dishes done before bed.

Your recipes for homemade cleaning products changed my life. I've been making my own for years according to them. The real test came when I cleaned the INSIDE of the range hood with your degreasing recipe. it was amazing. No scrubbing, just wiping -- and it was bad. The trick is to give the homemade products time to work. Yes, some things require a store-bought product but I find they are few and far between.

I like the point about not second guessing yourself about whether you're ever really going to use a product that didn't work the way you'd hoped, but before throwing it out, please consider thinking for a minute (or running a quick Google search) about whether it can be repurposed. If the shampoo you bought doesn't work well on your hair, it can be repurposed as a hand-soap, or used to clean the shower tiles, or used to pre-treat laundry stains, or used to clean your garden tools. After all, it's basically just a soap with added ingredients to keep it from drying out your hair. Same for lots of other products.

@cisium118411 ай бұрын
My mom was the opposite of your mom. My mom was a hoarder who strived for a kind of studied decorative clutter. For example, she would fill an empty corner of the floor with a small wooden chair. On the seat of the chair she would put a stack of hardbound coffee table books, all carefully staggered but with the spines all facing outward so that the titles could be seen. On the stack of books she would place a clay pot or a large glass bowl. Inside the bowl would be three or four fake pieces of fruit. And since my mother was also extremely frugal, all of this stuff - chair, books, bowl, fruit - would have been acquired for free from the "swap shop" at the town dump. And every corner of the house, every surface, every free patch of grass in the backyard, had some kind of decorative arrangement like this. It was like an insane asylum for interior decorators.

This is a great video. My husband and I started an unofficial challenge of not keeping the drip dry dishes on the counter. This might not work for big families, we are empty nesters. Anyway, I got sick and tired of seeing the clutter of hand-washed dishes on the drying mat that I had to clean up and put away every morning. So I put the drying mat away and started immediately hand drying those dishes and putting them where they belojnged on a shelf or in a drawer. Our kitchen looks so much cleaner and clearer and more beautiful. It is better not to have the drying mat out "temporarily" as it tends to stay out, and then there's a cluttered mess of an eye-sore on the counter again. It is not that difficult and just takes a couple of extra minutes. Yes, again I realize larger family homes may not be able to accomplish this, however, whenever we have our kids and grandkids over, we still don't take the dishmat out with all 8+ of us, I simply make sure the dishes go in the dishwasher right away and/or gets handwashed, dried and put away immediately. And the counter continues to look beautiful.

Clutter is my worst enemy. Living with two people who can’t part with anything, clutter is the main problem in my house. I ended up with a basket system. My main living areas have baskets where things can go to be cleaned up when we get to that room or section. I have one basket for things that goes into the kids bedroom, things that go into the kitchen, into the bedroom and so on. The purpose was that I could stay focused on what I was doing and didn’t get side tracked in another room. Since it worked so well, we ended up adding a small basket on the table for those little miscellaneous things that always seem to end up there. Like a little junk drawer. We also got a magazine stand for important mail and current newspapers. It’s tidy, but still available. And you only have to pick up the basket to clean under it

I then wait a few days or weeks and if it's still rattling in my head, I get it and try it out with my outfits. In the first phase I already got rid of so many things that I thought I needed, but I just forgot about them. In the second phase I really test it out and see if it's matching. I even have an online version of this, where I park the link in a note taking app and if after a few months, I still haven't bought it because I just forgot about it: gone! This has helped me so much in avoiding buying things that I then have no use for.

Go through mail immediately. And sort out trash. Through trash out. Then act on the bills or notices right then. I sit down, make the calls or pay the bills right then. No pile! I don’t keep bills after payment and have switched to email billing when possible. So the very rare property tax bill or birthday invite is left in a basket. That basket is left in a closet. Once a month I go and clear that basket out. Great system. My bills are always paid and my pile of mail is gone! 😊😊😊

My house just went on the market so I've been purging and decluttering for months. Surfaces are almost bare, but my 2 junk drawers......are crazy. It's been hard for me to clean out these drawers. I will try dropping everything into a box ( I'm also packing as I purge) as you suggest. Thx

I make myself a "trash can spray" which is rubbing alcohol mixed with some fragrence oil. That way after I wipe down my trash can I give it a quick once over with the spray and it'll be sanitized and smell nice.

I have a 9x3 foot island and l always put stuff on it so each day clear a area and am slowly clearing it. Have done 3/4 pf it, l am luck l have a large walk in pantry a few months ago l got metal racks from Ikea and have the space for my large appliances like my pressure cooker

I like the idea of collecting experiences instead of things, but both my husband and I are disabled and sometimes don't leave the house for over a week. A lot of things we can't afford to do or participate in like other people, so we get enjoyment from collecting things. For instance, my husband has been collecting comic books since 1989. He can't buy as many as he could before but it's something he still gets to do at home. Yes, they take up a lot of space but it doesn't bother us. As long as we know where everything is, that is what I call organized.

Having a small laundry basket in the bathroom that we take to the laundryroom every morning after we both showered. That way I see it when the big laundry baskets in the laundry room are full so I can turn on the machine before work and I will hang the clothes after work. And the next morning I will put the dry clothes in an empty laundry basket and put them upstairs to fold after work. Also a weekly grocery shopping trip instead of going every couple of days. Saves us a lot of money, time, mental energy and weight (going shopping hungry after a long work day means getting less healthier options, but I go once a week right after a good breakfast on my day off so that means healthier options come home). Dog related ones: Another one is washing the dog every 2 months. And also washing his stuff (blankets, bed cover, etc). This way my home doesn't smell like dog and shedding goes over quicker so less hair to vacuum.(we have an high velocity dryer, which blows out all the loose hair, way better than brushing ever could for our double coated shepherd). Another one it drying off his paws every time we've been outside and letting the dog fully dry before letting him into the living room. Also buying only dog stuff that is machine washable or can be wiped down easily.

Compassionate video thanks - if its helpful we switched to an app for magazines, periodicals - eg readly. A monthly sub , so many magazines to access but zero magazine stacks in the house
