I used to work at a outdoor specialist store on the clothing department and I just want to add my tips: If the jacket (this goes for any type of jacket really) has any waterproofing on it don't use regular detergent - only use the specialist cleaning supplies made for them as regular detergent will strip the waterproof coating and ruin the garment. Excellent video and advise as always!

I've had mine for about 15 years now. They are so long (kinda like a sleeping bag size) that rather than trying to wash them myself, I've taken them to a pro once a year. The coat was really cheap because it was on sale, but I still think paying for the cleaners have been a justified investment. I love my coat - it keeps me warm without layering. That's just super important to me.

I bought down coat last year and for the first time in my 15 years of moving to England, I don't abhor winter anymore . Seriously I didn't know coats actually kept you this warm, I thought they were a fashion accessory that kept the cold slightly away but that everyone was feeling the cold a little bit. Mine has other features like a big hood and high collar and ribbed cuffs, a lot of things that trap body heat and keep the wind chill away. I no longer look at very cheap coats, nor think only about fashion when choosing one. But then again I was teenager without much income to put on buying a high quality coat in the earlier years.

I love down, it is so much warmer than synthetics, especially in Alberta, Canada when temps are -25C and lower. A good quality down parka makes winter far more tolerable, especially if you have to work outside for 10 hour days in those temps. I was always freezing until I tried down.

Yes, I’ve had down jackets for many years, I consider them a must have in our cold northern climate! Instead of throwing out an old one I took the zipper out, folded it, sewed a nice cover and and made a pillow out of it!

I bought a $1300 mens parka down-filled jacket from Mackage. Its definitely worth an investment since I live in a rainy and chilly city. I used it on my trip to Yellowknife which was -41 degrees celsius (includes wind chill) and it kept me warm. I have mine readily accessible because it could rain at any time of the year. We just had snow in the last week of February in Vancouver. So far I haven't had any violent confrontations with animal activists in public. Lots of people are wearing fur trimmed jackets here and the weather is appropriate for it.

I have a coat that is 50% down and 50% waterfowl feathers. I love it so much. We don't get too much cold weather here, but when we do my coat keeps me quite warm. My mom bought it for me so I like it for that reason also! 😊

i love my down jacket! I've had it over 25 years and it has served me well :) I bought it when I lived in northern Minnesota..but then moved to Tennessee not long after... so, it does not get used in the Winter but once or twice...but still, its like a warm hug every time I put it on :) it hasn't been washed in quite a while.. thanks for the video on how to do this. I really appreciate you sharing this video, it was very helpful. As someone who lived in central Ontario and then relocated to northern Ontario (a sub-arctic climate) down filled was the only way to go. The alternatives (and I did a lot of research) were simply not rated to withstand the cold temperatures we get here (we had -51degrees Celsius in December!). Thank you! Washing mine now. I have a gun metal gray Via Spiga down jacket with a rabbit fur collar. I’ve had it for over five years now!! I’ve had this baby before Jean jackets were really that popular and I have looked at for others and nothing compares to it so I just take really good care of it. I live in Alabama, so our winters are usually mild. I can get away with a polyester filled ski jacket on cold days. I'm also cruelty-free, so that was something I kept in mind when looking for a jacket.

I first made the investment when in was 16(well my mother did) I had that jacket for almost 20 years it was amazing and sooo warm perfect for -30. I bought 2 downfilled last year and long one and a short riding one. My long one I regret buying in a lighter blue as with children I seem to have developed some grease stains? I'm scared to try to remove and think the $50 dry cleaning bill will be in order. Spool worth the investment though there isn't anything warmer for our climate

more and more I appreciate more conscientious purchases - spending more for something of a better quality that lasts much longer. Its easy to buy many cheap items because they are a bargain, but then you have more "stuff" cluttering up the place, and the quality isn't great. My only frustration is when I spend a lot thinking I am getting a quality item and it turns out to not be as good as I was expecting. Then I feel scammed. haha!

Have you any tipps on how to clean coats made with polyamid, polyester, whool and Acrylics? The label says do not wash, do Not dry. Its a light colored coat. And it definitly needs some sort of cleaninig after half the Season past by.

Yes!! I have a down filled jacket!!! Warmest thing ever in our Canadian enviornment!! I wash mine in gentle, cold, with non sudsing detergent. Dry in gentle heat. Comes out awesome! And my jacket is winter white so I clean it once a month. No worries, it turns out awesome with no funky smell!!!

I love my down fill jacket. I've had it for about 8 years now and it's starting to show some wear but I wear it all winter long for the most part. It's a lighter weight one, which I like because it's plenty warm and yet not too hot. I've always washed it on gentle and laid it flat, outside on a drying rack, on a sunny day and rotate it, kind of a pain but it's done okay. But I'm going to take your advise for the dryer, I was always afraid to put it in the dryer.

Hi Melissa Maker, I just wanted to say I was wondering about the washer detergent and the dry balls. I also was wondering what happened to your goal because you failed it; You said, “That you were going to wear the down winter jacket (Canada Goose, Parka, or otherwise) Coat for (20) Twenty years but then you said, “You couldn’t even zip it up any more”; Meaning that you can’t fit in it to zipper it up; You out grew it already. That cool; But now you already need a new one though which defeats the Purpose of your goal. I was wanting to learn more about this subject about winter down jacket coats. That would be awesome & amazing. I love them too like you and I love seeing people wear them I need to get one for me but I run so hot it has to be like o degrees for me. She couldn't zip it up because she was pregnant at the time of this video. But yes down is amazing when temps are cold. When it is -25C or below here I find a good down parka is a must. I used to always freeze in those temps until getting a good down parka. Even a good down jacket doesn't work as well as a down parka in those temps. I have tried many synthetic parkas and jackets and they aren't nearly as warm as down.

I have a Moncler Angers down Jacket and I am not quite happy with the way dry cleaners have been cleaning it. Would you suggest anything based on the fact that my washing machine has a tumble dryer incorporated and apart of the time I cannot set individual temperatures and so on? Also I have a Superdry jacket which is not down it has some synthetic filling but it’s very colourful like red, white, navy blue and black, is there any way to wash it at home? It says dry cleaning on the labels and I assume the colours might come off if washing? Many thanks,
