Use wood or plastic shims between table and clamp. No marks left from clamps.

Yes, but the tension is nowhere near as good as a tapestry loom.

While the pickup stick is in place, is there any reason you would not put the pickup stick on its side to make the shed larger and put the heddle through that way?

You can try to, but when the heddle is up it creates a lot of tension and that makes it difficult to turn your pick up stick on edge. You could always place it on edge and then hold it there, it will help you to see the correct shed by enlarging it slightly, but some people may find it difficult or just tedious holding the stick in place while weaving the weft row.
