Darnit Danny, 😎 I've had these CST-1'S with crossovers upgraded, and your other recommended upgrades for nearly 3-years... I recently figured out properly positioned speakers and sub...🎶 Thank you Danny, although I'm an old man now, I've dreamed of this beautiful sound since I was a teenager. Using an Old Marantz 100w/ ch Stereo, Good speaker positioning, + SVS sb-1000 positioned well... = happy old man 👍 God bless you and yours. 🎶

Upgraded from the old Marantz SR7002 receiver (100w/ch) to EMOTIVA XPA-DR1 Monoblock's (650w/ch), EMOTIVA XDA-3-DAC, and better speaker cables. Hearing this is helping me to understand what Danny talks about. This is like feeding NOS to the CST-1's. 🎶 😁 🎶

@AverageNiceGuy9 ай бұрын
@@anthixious Correct, Caps and no-rez upgrade. I like them very much. There are better speakers, but all I've thought of, would be $1000 or much more of an increase in price. I'm tweaking sources, streamers, cables lately. The CST'1s are showing me all changes nicely. For the cost, I do not regret the speakers in any way. If you like a punch in the belly sound pressure.. Larger woofers are worth considering. These 5 inch woofers sound very nice, but they are not boxing gloves. The tweeters on these are brilliant. So nice that they do not drill holes in your ears. Upgraded caps helped clarity. No-rez helped cabinet resonation, that was not terrible, but I enjoy the no-rez neutral sound. The no-rez install is a pain, but I'm glad that I did it. The transmission design is very nice. I've tilted mine further up 3 inches in front to raise soundstage. Flexible plastic in the back. I'm using an SVS SB-1000 SUB, and running the CST-1'S full range lately. Positioning and tuning has helped. And, they are beautiful. Chat more if you like. I enjoy helping others. Maybe another way to communicate? Best wishes to you and yours.
@AverageNiceGuy9 ай бұрын
@@anthixious Hello, I thought that I replied to this earlier.. 🤔 Yes,, upgraded capacitors and no-rez. I have a video comparing before and after. If you want "punch in the belly" power, the small woofers won't do that like a 10-12 inch woofer. The ~"planar magnetic" tweeters are beautiful, smooth, detailed, and not fatiguing. The transmission line bass is nice. I'm recently using these full range, with an SVS SB-1000 subwoofer. I tilted them up 3 inches in the front to raise soundstage (braced in the back). I'm shopping for streaming options. I am not shopping for speakers. To better these CST-1's, i would need to spend a few thousand dollars.

@@joeygonzo I am very impressed. I finished the upgrades with sonicaps, and the no-rez internall insulation. Prior to these, the SVS-Ultra Bookshelves, and SVS SB-1000 subbwoofer, driven with a Marantz receiver, was the nicest system I had owned. These CST-1's have significantly better tweeters, and the bass response is so nice, I gave away the BIC-America sub that I thought they would need. These sound like they belong in a class of speaker that costs $2000 plus. The SVS-Ultra bookshelves sound like solid $1k. The waveguide and bandpass labyrinth, with the bass exiting the bottom rear is impressive. The beauty of sound coming out the front is very satisfying. There are some more professional writeups available on the internet (Carnegie CST-1's) but these are a little better with the sonicaps and no-rez. They are like a good wife, I don't even look at other speakers anymore. :0

Dang these look awesome! I would pull the trigger right now, but I can't be satisfied with -3db at 40hz so I would need to add a subwoofer, and I don't have a source with a subwoofer output either... so I would need a source and a sub just to make these work for me =/. I've always been into DIY audio stuff but if you keep offering this kind of value, whether it's a price-slashed pre-made or a high value kit, I may have to think twice! I really love horns, but I've been dying to get some planar speakers. I'd love to see what Dannie could do with some horns, with his own kit!!! Something like the Geddes speakers, but even more full-range. I really want speakers that can do a solid -3db at 20-25hz so that no sub is needed. Even -3db at 30hz would be acceptable. The big Geddes speaker (15") looks incredible and I really want a pair but they're not tuned to really play that low, though perhaps it could be coaxed out of them idk. I don't want to integrate a sub. If I'm gonna drop a couple grand on speakers I don't want to have to drop another grand or two on a sub and then look at different source and amplifier candidates, since I prefer using budget audiophile 2-ch amplifier boards... just the board, psu sold separate, no case. It's the only way to get 200 watts of audiophile level audio for 300 bucks. www.connexelectronic.com (when I say 200 watts I mean into 8 ohms and not with a 1% thd figure, I mean a .02% or less distortion figure!) I've always liked big speakers, my speakers (custom made) have 15" jbl 2225H's and while they need some EQ to boost the bass they sure have no problem putting out tons of bass down to ~30hz. I'd say the mechanical/enclosure rolloff begins around 35hz, is still strong at 30hz, significantly down but usable at 25hz, and way down but audible and noticeably pressurizing the room and shaking things at 20hz. Thus they serve me well for movies and music at any volume. Regardless of the relative -3db point, since EQ can adjust for that in either case, those two little woofers just cant put out the spl 15"'s can, even with an awesome transmission line. But my god, I know the mids and highs would be so much sweeter than my already decent setup!
@dannyrichie97434 жыл бұрын
We have servo controlled woofers that will do anything you want them to do and then some. They even have high level inputs. So they will work with anything. Oh, and they play flat to 20Hz and stop on a dime. gr-research.com/diysubwooferkits.aspx And I have worked on horn speakers and high sensitivity models quite a bit. I have helped some guys straighten out their Geddes speakers too. They had a lot of resonance issues and needed crossover upgrades badly.

searching for an hour can't find the crossover for that model. but it's a good speaker you don't need to change the drivers they are rubber surrounds, the only thing you might want to change is the electrolytic capacitors for metal film poly capacitors, of the same value make sure that all are balanced or at 1% or lower, and some natural wool fleece stuffing in the back try 20% possibly. Speak to to somebody who will have some experience with them I word first Call try WilmslowAudio in the UK, there's a place in the us madisound both of these companies will have vast knowledge and could advise you on crossover, and maybe one upgrade the tweeter that's the only driver I possibly would upgrade for scan speak or seas, but they'll be able to give you the right driver for your speaker. There's a forum called DIYaudio forum, there be somebody has done that crossover more than likely, very friendly knowledgeable chaps, about amplified speaker building somebody be able to advise you. Good luck. The easiest solution is to change those electrolytics they probably be blue non-polarized, I can't remember the make now of hand. you don't need soldering skills for crossovers some decent high-grade solder silver 60/40 to solder and a good iron 60 Watts. . Just write down the value of of the non polarised electrolytic capacitor values. Go somewhere like digikey or mouser or those companies I suggested, and try and get some metal film poly capacitors to replace them. Talk to those two companies first they might sell your complete crossover kit they probably make one for your speaker, or can put one together for you. If you take it on let me know how it goes, worth doing for that speaker 74i these speakers selling I don't think these are any better than what you've got.

Sometimes, its just better to just buy something that you can do some simple mods to make Fantastic, world class & one of a kind. This is that turn-key Speaker project I love to handle. May take a week to get all the work done to it to bring it to the level it was suppose to be as spec'ed, but its all simple stuff. Take your time, and you got one heck of a great pair of speakers. All done, and you don't need to be shy to show them off to friends and guests. That's a win win for anyone. And lets be real here. I have LOTS of tools. But just the cost of the Materials & Tools to make that cabinet would cost well over $1000 bucks. It's not like building a simple sub-woofer box. This is something you have displayed in the living room. Its the first thing people see. And to be honest? I have not seen anything like this in the big box stores. Its a home run if you ask me.

I refurbished a pair of no name speakers and they were awesome! Now, I just finished a pair of speakers my friend gave me and ended up using a subwoofer to get enough low end. They were a huge failure. My problem is exactly what he’s talking about here, no tooling and

Danny, you look like one of the Beatles now. I got out my clippers and gave myself a "basic training" haircut. I'll start posting your stuff on my FB and try to drive some traffic. Take it easy, and cut your hair.

I know! I needed a hair cut before the whole Corona virus shut down. All the hair cutting places have been closed for about 4 or 5 weeks. And I need a hair cut. If it gets any worse my wife is going to get a hold of it, and then there is no telling what I will look like.

@@dannyrichie9743 Dude, your better half is creative. If she can do trim work and paint, she can cut your hair. I have faith in her. Tell her I said HI!

Can not see a thing , but are the cabinets just painted m.d.f ?

Most likely, as are most speakers. MDF is an excellent material to use to build speakers. Hardwoods are not, as they resonate (think guitar or violin).

Why black glossy? To me it looks a bit cheap since a lot of cheap electronics have this. you also see scratches to finger marks easily? you do not see details in black. if you have amplifiers in the shelf then you must have a lot of light or you will see almost no details. semi-gloss is best and wood pattern!

I've got the fever! Email sent Thad I'm thinking that these will probably hold me over as I lean towards sending you my SVS Ultra bookshelves for an upgrade. I would also enjoy it, that after your upgrade.,that I ship the Ultras to New Record Day, if he might be willing to review them, before I get them back?

I could swear that I read that B & G went out of business or quit making those drivers.

They sold out to Christy Digital. The drivers are still being made.

If the speaker already has BENIC or other relatively good polyester or pomypropylene capacitor but the speaker has bad sound then the do not help to switch to expensive filter parts! then construction is wrong and not the quality of parts!

Did I hear you say polymere woofers? Plastic chassis from China? Omg.
$899? but the drivers are the cheap version of your $29 driver (so even if it were your more optimum / expensive driver, @$2k original price, each driver is 1.45% of unit?
