Steep lots like that can be expensive to build on, but they make for interesting properties. I once lived in such a house that was on five different levels, and while we did not have a creek at the bottom of the slope (more like a ditch) we did have ancient woodland. That meant snowdrops after Christmas and bluebells in the spring. We felt privileged to live there. John was worrying me knelt down behind that tree with the chainsaw. With Chris pushing the top I was concerned the trunk would barber-chair and John would have been hard pressed to get out of the way. Shake Hands With Danger, uncle John.

A few months ago, an old friend of mine was killed in an accident taking down some dead trees; one tree got hung up on another one and caused a branch to drop on him. Wish he had a big machine to be in when that happened. Be safe!

I had to remove the 8' high trunk & roots of a 12" diameter damson in my garden today. Took me 4 hours to dig round the roots & cut through them with an axe. I reckon Chris' machine could probably have plucked it straight out the ground in one pull. 😁
@stevewolff71873 жыл бұрын
Its interesting that you are able to remove the trees and root systems in the septic system area. In Minnesota you must not disturb the ground at all in the septic site. You can cut the tree down but the stump must remain. A mound is built on top of the undisturbed soil. I would like to see you leave at least one tree in the future front yard. It pains me to see all those mature trees being taken down!

I watch these with mixed feeling, over the years, I've watched thousands of acres of woodlands turned into all sorts of housing as people "move into the country." The loss of these woodlands saddens me, but to each his own. We have quite a bit of land and have standing offers of very substantial money for home sites, but the present tax structure is such we can decline. I'm sure it is not good economics to keep that lot "as is". Businesses like letsdig 18 are essential and we recently dropped $40k+. We occasionally rent an excavator, but a seasoned operator at the controls makes all the difference in many instances. I see comments on what to do with the wood. Here, we literally can't give it away. Our contractor is a friend and he checked everyone he knew, so we'll burn it.

Trees in a forest will grow up higher than in isolation due to reaching the sun and protecting each other against wind. Clearing a lot and keeping only some trees which were growing up under forest conditions can cause problems after the forest condition is cleared away. To high for staying alone.
