We desperately want to spend more time on the homestead, but for us to be able to do that we first need a place to stay. In this video we start to clear out a 9m X 6m (29.5ft X 19.7ft) space where one of our 3 tiny homes will be built on our homestead.

This first house we will be building on our homestead will be a 2 bedroom, 9m long tiny house. It is not a true tiny house, but it will be small in comparison to your average urban home.
Part of creating our homestead from scratch is doing absolutely everything ourselves, wherever possible and this includes building our own house on the homestead. This 2 bedroom house will be the first house that we will use as a base for all subsequent homestead work. We will then build a smaller 1 bedroom house to allow friends, family and supports like you to come stay with us on the homestead. By staying on the homestead with us you can experience the homesteading life, help us with things to be done or just sit back and take in all the beauty the land has to offer.
Our homesteading journey is all about sharing. We want to share our knowledge, experiences, produce and space with you so we can get more people motivated to take the leap towards a healthier, more sustainable living way of living. Not just for the earth, but for our own bodies and minds.

Have you set up your own homestead from scratch? How did you find clearing the land to be able to build your own homestead home? I would love to know what your tips, tricks and experiences were? 🌻

Not easy, costly & physically draining especially doing it yourself but worth it with every progress achieved.

I wish someone in South Africa will show progress with building a straw bale home. I am envious as to how beautiful your land is.

Aw, thank you so very much 💚 I plan on opening it up for people to visit and stay so I can hopefully inspire others to do the same! I know Numbi Valley is just down the road and they built a clay house and often share very openly how they built it and give workshops and tips. Maybe reach out to them? As we don't live on the land (yet) doing a house like this will be very difficult and take incredibly long but maybe we will do it somewhere in the future. Also just need to keep an eye on the price of hay as it's become incredibly expensive lately (R200+ per bale). Best to start chatting to farmers and locals to see what you could do 🌻

@@tamakoa-homestead I saw some recently for sale in the Free state for R50/bale. According to online calculators, for the size of house I want to build I will need about 200 bales. I just saw you on another video where you said people asked why you wanted to make such a change "at your age". I hope you didn't mean you are too old. I'm 65 and am about to change my life totally. One too many armed robbery in JHB... Love your channel and videos. I hope you grow exponentially.

Oh wow, that's an incredible price and would make building with straw really worthwhile! No, not at all regarding my age. It relates to the fact that I am so young and that I should be slogging at my job and investing every cent to survive my retirement. People think I'm crazy to want to go against the system at such a young age with a family, but that's where I really hope to inspire others to make a chnage and that it's possible. Well done to you too for making this change. It's a bold decision but an incredibly worthwhile one 💚

What is the width of a firebreak in South Africa? The width of firebreaks depends on where it is to be made: Fynbos/Natural veld on agricultural land - 2,5 m x the height of vegetation (minimum of 5 m). Road verge (provincial and district roads)- 3 m on either side to be maintained annually. Labour housing, farm infrastructure and homesteads - 10 m.

This is really insightful and useful to me, thanks so much for sharing 🙏🏼 I will be joining my local FPA soon and I'm sure they will also give me some local guidance on requirements but yes, your comment makes me realise I need to have much bigger safe spaces around the little houses 🌻

@@tamakoa-homestead You welcome. Thanks for great content. I know on some farms people have fire breaks of at least 15 - 25 m just to be safe incase of runaway fires that can jump smaller fire breaks due to very high wind speeds . Keep up the good work. All the best!

HISTORICAL•NORTH AMERICAN (as provided by the federal Homestead Act of 1862) an area of public land in the West (usually 160 acres) granted to any US citizen willing to settle on and farm the land for at least five years. You do not have a "homestead." The very definition of a homestead is a 160 acre plot of land in the US.

Luckily time has evolved and we no longer live in the 1800's 👍 Also, such a pitty that most American Homesteaders are actually not Homesteaders at all as their land is smaller than 160 acres and reside outside of the Western States...
