Sorry but no. A pedestrian is already crossing the road. As people we risk assess, whatever rules you think the instructor was right about she was completely wrong to tell the student to keep going. Folks the pedestrian is not the point I was making. The student saw a red light and a pedestrian so decided to stop. Most folk would do exactly the same thing. The instructor then started telling the student to keep going when the vehicle was almost at a stop. Vehicles from behind, if reading the road ahead would have already slowed, so getting the student to then drive again adds confusion. It also creates confusion for the pedestrian already on the road when the instructor is telling the student to go, assuming that pedestrian is paying attention to the traffic. As motorists we have a responsibility to everything around us as what we are driving is ultimately a very dangerous machine. Rule number one, never assume. The time to raise this junction with the student was after the junction had passed and maybe have a go again. The rules here do not matter, driver risk assessment does. If you cannot risk assess the road, don’t drive.

To explain the laws behind this incident: - If the lights are on BOTH sides of the road / lane, the light applies to EVERYONE (no matter which road you came from) - If there is only ONE traffic light (on one side of the road), that light ONLY applies to the traffic coming from where it is facing (currently waiting at the lights behind the student when they stopped). In Norway you're required to stop at ANY pedestrians waiting to cross, be it 8 lanes or 2, you are to halt your lane since YOU know there's pedestrians crossing, the drivers behind you doesn't. It is for this reason that of she had NOT stopped she would be instantly failed here and if a driving instructor had this attitude they would be back on the school bench immediately. Instructor cause a stressful situation and the pedestrian would assume the driver intended to stop due to slowing down, hence "keep driving" would be a "run him over as he thinks it's safe" A instructor should act like a finnish rally driver when going off a cliff, calm and cool until the car stops rolling. Only interact when they're about to do something that puts lives at risk. She was not and I wouldn't have her in my car as a passenger

Brit here. At junctions there will be a solid white line between two sets of traffic lights. That's where you need to stop if it's red. There's also a third set of lights on the right-hand side of the exit of the junction that I think are there so you can see when the lights change. The junction in this clip has the third set placed way too far from the junction and in the middle of the road making it very confusing. The instructor was right that the light wasn't for the driver, but the driver was right to be cautious. The drivers behind can mind their own business.

Most of the time it's obvious - these are the advanced lights for people on the main route so they don't need to peer upwards through the corner of their windscreens. This is a repeater traffic light. A repeater light is distinguished by the lack of a white line below it, and the lack of a second light on the left hand side of that bit of road. They're intended for cars stopped at the primary lights which would be out of shot to the left of the cam car . If the video would have started a little sooner, you'd see that they're turning right at a T-junction. Assuming that you drive; you'll go through these all the time. Next time you turn right at a set of lights, look up to your right. You'll see a single red light, which is the repeater light for other traffic that would be crossing your path (if they had a green light). You'll also see one on the opposite side of a junction when you're stopped at the primary lights. In this instance it is meant for you; more specifically, for the first car at the stop light as it can be difficult to see the lights when stopped at the white line directly below them.

Honestly I'm of the opinion that these "far side" traffic lights (like they have in the USA) are really dumb. It allows drivers to pass the stop line or cycle box, which means that pedestrians can't cross as easily. It's also really confusing to everyone, as this video shows! In short: multiple lights = always stop; one light = far side light applying only to oncoming cars.

the trouble is that the examiner is looking for more than just taking the "safe" option. She must be convinced that the applicant knows all the road rules, including this one, and also that she is competent to let loose on her own. You will fail for not demonstrating confidence and capability, as you should. Imagine how you feel if you pass a learner who promptly kills themselves or others for some silly failure behind the wheel.
@WiiDSCube5 ай бұрын
@tonycook7679 of course but I'd rather someone only be confident if they truly know what's the right and wrong thing to be doing. Confidence while driving is 100% very important. Hesitation can cause an accident as much as ignorance, but making confident mistakes is way worse. Way easier to avoid accidents with a driver that won't take the right of way when it should vs a driver that will take the right of way when it shouldn't. Even if they're stopping at a green light, that's safer and easier for everyone around them to handle than running a red light. It's still Incredibly dangerous to do but if you have safe stopping distance then you'll have plenty of time to see the car ahead and stop before you crash even if it's just sitting still. I'm not saying this deserves a pass on the test but as far as mentality and how that driver driver defaults to not make rushed decisions and would rather take thinfs slow is a sign that they're thinking safely and won't make a knee jerk reaction when things get confusing or stressful. Half of driving safely is knowing the rules, the other half is just paying attention and having a good reaction to when other people don't follow the rules

It's a T-Junction. The street that the driver comes out of at the start of the video has it's own set of lights and by the point in the video, they would've been green. The lights that we see in the video are repeated lights for the cars that are to the left (or behind the driver after she comes into the road fully). The driver in this instance has right of way, but because she stopped, the pedestrian continued to cross.

Nah its really obvious when you're not micro focusing 3 inches in front of yourself (as learners tend to do naturally) and you are aware of the junction from an earlier stage.
@SmithenJW04k Жыл бұрын
@@CoyoteBoyUKTheres no logical reason the red light should be placed there instead of the forefront of an intersection. Sure, if you've grown up around roads like this, then its obvious. But just because something works doesn't mean it should. The only reason I can see them placing the red light far foward is because of the crosswalk, but apparently the light has no effect to that crosswalk, so what the fuck UK.
@CoyoteBoyUK Жыл бұрын
@@SmithenJW04k Couple of points you don't see from the video (of course, edited to get best reaction), which probably drives your mis-understanding of the layout. This red light is a repeater signal for a primary red light behind the camera car (while it waits for the pedestrian). You can't see this red from the car's starting position, only once you turn into the junction, at which point you're not meant to stop - you only ENTER a junction when it's clear for you to exit. You only stop if the red light shows toward you when there's a solid white line in your lane, as you can see - there isn't one. The crosswalk has its own control over the lights, and only stops traffic if someone presses the button, at which point it would stop ALL lanes that could allow traffic to cross that crosswalk. It's all very logical and functions just fine. This junction is quite long, which means that the learner has dropped out of "junction" mode in their head and gone back into "driving along the road" mode, and sees the repeater as a new signal, not part of the original that they entered, most aren't like this, but the rules still cover this - there's no white line in the road so this light does not relate to you at this point. Of course you'd always stop for the pedestrian crossing anyway, so this "fail" isn't really justified, especially not under the new UK laws where pedestrians crossing normal roads always have priority.
@SmithenJW04k Жыл бұрын
@@CoyoteBoyUKI'm sorry, but shouldn't the repeater light still be placed closer to the start of the road markings? As in closer to the traffic it applies to, like the opposite lane of the dashcam vehicle. I understand that it's supposed to make it easier for the person at the front of the red lights, but placing it this far back seems like it would create unnecessary confusion.
@CoyoteBoyUK Жыл бұрын
@@SmithenJW04k That's what I meant by it being a long junction and a little unusual, but still covered by the "no solid line, so this light doesn't apply to you" rule, it can't be placed closer because that would be in the middle of the junction and would be inhibiting larger traffic which needs the space to turn (you'd have to put an island and a bollard etc, we don't have hanging repeaters here really and you can't just whap a pole in the roadway because of impact risks). If you're not a new driver, it's intuitive to know where to stop because you're not in an unfamiliar environment - the line-before-lights rule doesn't need to be thought about, because it's second nature once you've driven for a few weeks. I have absolutely made this mistake as a seasoned driver here, but not come to a full stop - just had a moment of "oops...oh, not my lights, carry on".
