You had to learn yourself motorways so it was interesting to see how I learnt myself being taught properly. You have to like how she was showing be far more attentive to what is behind and look further ahead because you are going to reach a problem a lot quicker than you think. I like motorway driving except for two things, when it comes to a halt you are stuck and dealing with poorly marked spiral roundabouts I don't know getting on and off.

i never learned on highways... fastest i drove was maybe 80 kph on a connecting road outside city limits, it was scary at first when i was by myself, but you get used to it and it requires a lot less attention than in the city with pedestrians and narrow roads with parked cars, on the other hand a mistake on the highway can be fatal.

Plan a 5-6-8 hour driving road trip with a second driver, so you can swap at some points, I promise it'll be interesting. You'll probably see some idiots going 90-100mph, you'll get to see trucks moving huge amounts of air causing cross winds for you, you'll get to feel tired and unaware of it, when you're done and near your destination you'll feel drained you'll start noticing subtle inability to gauge incline/decline rate, eventually you'll be on local roads, tons of signage but your brain will still be focusing on motorway driving and not mode switching. Do it, it'll be fun, there's fun stuff far away that you can just pick up and go and get to. Stretch your brain you'll be good.

@@byronchavarria4954 I have a copy of a ticket for doing 115mph in CA from 15y ago. Apparently, CHP spotted me from patrolling the opposite direction, double backed over the median ditch and it took them nearly 15 minutes to catch up in their crown vic (was doing 150 at times). I was almost in NV. CHP, was surprisingly super nice. But, most people doing 100mph+, however, have very little experience with their car at high speeds, and are doing one off pulls, in traffic, weaving lanes, undertaking, etc.. not good.

I was crazy nervous before the test in the waiting room but as soon as I got in the car I really calmed down telling myself “I’m ready, I can do this, I can drive” the examiner didn’t talk to me apart from giving me directions but the 40 minutes went by really fast

"I don't even know how to get out of here", said Erin. Don't worry about that - it's exactly the same for me on many of my drives in London, and I've been driving for more than 30 years! Remember that there will always be places that you do not know / that you've never been to before - never be disheartened by not knowing where a way out is; it doesn't matter if it's the way out of a town or out of a car park. This is one of the great things about driving - the discovering of new places, and the skills you learn will help you deal with any situation that you come across. Granted, most places that you discover will be more fulfilling and enriching experiences than the car park of Beaconsfield Services. Finally, I think that your level of driving ability is high already, and you'd be more than justified in having a lot more confidence in your abilities! 👍

@barsorrro
@barsorrro Жыл бұрын
@@dipakrawal1509 Not really sure what you mean. The speed limits set by the legislator are always very conservative -- i.e. low. The legislator knows they are establishing the limits for drivers of various skill-levels and natural predispositions to drive cars. Also, the limits hardly evolve while the cars are getting safer all the time (both in terms of structural strength, as well as active driving-assist systems and additional safety equipment). There is an unavoidable, inherent risk at using any type of vehicle, but -- same as with, let's say, germs in your surroundings -- there's a balance between prudence and phobia. Speed doesn't kill. What kills is the lack of attention, the lack of skill/training, bravado, etc. You're certainly more at risk riding your bike at 20 mph in a city than driving a car at 70 mph on a motorway. Having said that, you obviously need to build up to that speed, so that both your reflexes and your awerness of what your imputs will do to the car at a given speed become adequate.

Pretty sure you're only allowed on the motorway with an ADI though, not just practicing with your dad. It wasn't allowed in my day anyway. I think it's a good change to let learners on because in my day you had the absurd situation of newly passed drivers with ZERO motorway experience, often going out unaccompanied or needing to take Pass Plus i.e. more lessons. However large parts of the UK aren't served by motorways. My nearest is an hour away.

I was nervous and so I did the Pass Plus course with the same instructor who taught me. I remember at first I had a similar issue in that I was going too slow for like the first couple of minutes. My instructor just said "So what's the national speed limit?" I answered and he just looked at me, smiled, and said "well, go on then! speed up a little." Erin done really well for her first time on the motorway, I can understand her comment of feeling like she's not in control of the car, as on the motorway one can become a passenger due to the lack of needed input. It's an adjustment , as she's so used to driving around build up areas where input is needed constantly. It can also be very deceptive, she looks comfortable at that speed, when road is clear, but you can see her inexperience when the road gets busy, and large vehicle get close, but this is the case with everyone learning, she's on the right path though 🙏🙏

I passed my test 18 months ago tbs ago, i never covered motorways as part of my learning and did very little dual carriageway work either due to the roads round my way! It can be very intimidating as you’re doing things at 70 that you have much more time to do when you’re going at 30, I drove the whole of the M27 from Chichester to Burley and after 15 minutes I felt pretty comfortable and was confident in judging distance and changing lanes/overtaking. Glad I’ve done it now as I’ve been avoiding them since I passed.

First timw on a motorway can be hella scary especially when u have passed ur test and been driving a whole different car and got used to the sounds of that car then to go into a different car on a busy motorways is daunting. She did amazing especially for her first time. Just think dule carriages are like "mini" motorway ( the 70 mph ones) the ones by me have up to 5 lane's! Its no different on the motorway... expect everyone to pull out in front of you, cut you up and that no one else has indicators. Be ready to safly stop if necessary, slow down or move lane's just the same as dule carriages, only difference is you can go from one end of country to other on one road without really having to go on different speed roads 😊

A very important tip is when needing to get into the middle lane from the outside(overtaking) labe and you see another driver from the inside lane wanting to do the same thing ensure you are AHEAD of them so they can,clearly ,see you,also ,want to get into that labe.

Absolutely. I was lucky because in addition to having lessons with a driving school, my boss (who was paying for my lessons) had a friend who worked for the ambulance service teaching new recruits to drive the ambulances who also gave me some extra lessons. He taught me so much about reading the road as far as you could see ahead including what pedestrians were doing at the same time because if you’re like me, you’ll know they are also unpredictable and regularly step out into the road without looking

I think she’d really benefit from a lesson focused on when to commit at traffic lights… Whether I’m driving or cycling (yes I stop at red lights when cycling, crazy concept isn’t it) I either verbally or mentally say the word “through” when I’m no longer going to stop if the lights change to amber. Then if they change there’s no decision to make - if I haven’t said it then I stop, if I have then I continue.

Just go for it. Go on later in the day on a weekday (after 8pm) it will be quiet. Sat nav takes care of it all. It's honestly so much calmer and less stressful than driving around a city centre where you have to brake all the time, deal with lots of parked cars and pedestrians. You just sit in a big lane at 70 and chill out. You'd be suprised once you get on how easy it is. Just pay attention to your speed and others around and in front of you.

It’s not that bad, I was on the M25 not too long ago and that wasn’t even as bad as it’s made out to be. Just try it and take your time, just stay to the left lane til you build your confidence up, don’t feel the need to overtake if you don’t have to or keep up with the maniacs
@Isleofskye

Very sensible to get an older car,after you pass as you are far more likely to get knocks in your first year, and that decreases with every subsequent year. The problem in the first year is lack of experience and, thus, anticipation and, often, you hear new drivers say "It wasn't my fault" after a knock but then, with greater experience they, THEN, realise it, probably,was their mistake in that first year.

For your first time on the motorway you're doing good. The more forward you can look and also the further back you can look. If you can watch the cars from behind and watch the gap you want to take it will help . Also think of where the other cars cam go so ife you want to go into the middle lane and a car is in the middle lane with no one in the 3rd they will most likely use the 3rd lane if they are paying attention which then helps you out. So think I want to do that and I want them to do that

@wrightwoodwork Жыл бұрын
@pawelenczewski7900 probably the speeds and overwhelmed by it all. As long as you're looking as far ahead as you can see and also as far back as you can see . Generally you are fine. The hardest part is probably the entry onto the motorway. The secret is to match the speed of the traffic already on. Its no use doing 70 when the traffic is traveling at 40 as you will crash and the same if you are doing 40 you are going to struggle to get on with people doing 70 and even more.

After passing my test in November 2021 (in a A class auto) I Bought my first car from a dealer in Burnley in March last year and had to drive all the way back to South Manchester with no real motorway lessons apart from a small stretch at 50mph. That said, in the fifteen months of owning the car I’ve now covered over 12,000 miles (social miles only)

I surprised that Erin was so calm on the motorway! This is a main thing to drive anywhere, to be relaxed. I had just 1 main thing what was strange for me, but it not just at Erin, actually a lot of drivers do this thing: wrong (or not the best) seating position. She lift up her heads a lot of time to see better, instead of lift up the seat to higher position. I see this a lot of times on the road and it is not safe at all. In the insight camera showed me as well, her chin was too close to the steering wheel. The 2nd problem was just a minor thing, but connecting with the seat position as well. The legs have to be totally stretched when you push the pedals to the end. Her legs were too close to 90 degrees position. It means for a longer journey they can be painful. So my suggestion, lift up the seat and push back a little bit! It will change a lot for the future. If I can be with Erin, I teach her more for the gear shifting procedure, because she was uncertain and slow a lot of times. I am a taxi driver now (with 36 years old driving licence), but I wasn't better, when I was in her position. So, respect for her!

Swimming wirh the flow and switching lanes safely with some different.tial speed , leaving distance and looking ahead , seems a challenge no for computer screen fixed generation. No idea of 4D movements. Probably the lack of sports in primary school😅
