I remember the first time i went on a motorway it was really scary. I know what Kelly means about the lorries they can be really intimidating and scary when they’re really close to you. I wish i did it with an instructor the first time but it does get easier the more you do it. Well done Kelly!

I passed recently and I've only been on the A1M motorway so far, and that was bleak compared to the scenic A roads I'm used to! Not sure why having proper trees on both sides makes driving so much more enjoyable but it does. I'm going to have to use the M11 and the M25 this weekend though so thought I'd watch this to prepare myself.

Actually very useful. I had a couple of lessons in December and January after not driving for 3 years and I passed back in mid 2016. Then got my own car again in February and had my first motorway drives this month with my instructor. Slip roads and then passing exits is probably the most challenging bit. On my first drive there were 2 lorries in the left lane close together and I was level with the middle of the first one. Maybe I should have tried to squeeze in between them but I instead may have done a safe undertake as the slip road became its own lane and I had to keep right as became an exit shortly after. You make a very good point about speed perception. My area has a lot of 70mph dual carriageway with back to back roundabouts and slowing down enough coming up to the give way line is an area that can be quite difficult because of that perception. My driving instructor never advised aiming for a certain speed but I think this would help. 20 is a good number I think but others may say 15. 15 is a bit slow if the roundabout is perfectly clear and no queue in front of you to join

Fantastic video, lovely to see her getting more confident on a motorway! The closest motorway to where I live is a 30 min drive away so I don't know if I'll be able to go on that, but we do have a large dual carriageway as part of our ring road which is very similar to a motorway in almost every way (apart from the fact that it has the less common two lanes instead of three which is more common on motorways) so hopefully when I do my lessons I'll be able to go on there, and this video and channel has helped me with tips as well :) thank you very much!

@wrightwoodwork
@wrightwoodwork Жыл бұрын
@maramazone @maramazone for the signs as long as you know the number to use to get off. There will always be a sign 1 mile before your junction so you have time to plan. If you have to take a fork off just keep an eye on the gantry signs. Also if it's area you drive in often you will pick up landmarks of say a bridge or high rise building a down hill section etc. If you already know roughly your journey before setting off. It will help you to relax and you already know what instructions the sat nav will tell you or what signs to look for like junction number before it does. Then again if it's a journey you do all the time you won't need to use the sat nav

@wrightwoodwork

@maramazone a lot of it is just an experience that you will develop over time. It's much easier to gather knowledge now than when I was 17, and things like sat navs or Google maps didn't exist. At times, the information can be overwhelming and scary. Truthfully, if you just get on with it, you'll be fine. You've passed your test so you have shown you have the skills to drive and now it's about developing your skills as a driver and the best way is to do it. Let's say you can play the piano and are learning a new piece of music you would learn the right then once you have it mastered then learn the left then you would start to combine the left and right avengly over time and with practice you will not need to read the music to know what to play as you will just do it without thinking.

I could have edited this out to make it seem perfect but I feel like it’s more useful to show that there’s no such thing as a lesson going perfectly (for a learner)! 2 lane motorways are the worse with lorries overtaking over lorries which leads to lots of tailgating behind as they are wanting to do 70mph. The lorry wants to do 55mph and overtakes because the over lorry is doing 54mph.
@JohnFarrell-bc8gt

Lorries overtaking don't cause tailgating. Truckers don't have control of the tailgater behind.
@suzukidaniel1396
@suzukidaniel1396 10 ай бұрын
@@JohnFarrell-bc8gt Yes the lorry overtaking the other lorry won't be tailgating. what I mean by tailgating are the vehicles behind the lorry that's in the 2nd lane because motorway's are set to 70mph and drivers behind just get frustrated because they have no choice other than to do 55mph because they stuck behind the overtaking lorry. I have seen it no end of times along long stretches of the A1 as example when you can't do 70mph for any reason then you're just left to no end of vehicles traveling far too close to one another. Lorry drivers are good when they do move over to let you on at slip roads which I give them credit for. As a car driver when they do this I don't build my speed to 70 straight away and let the lorry move back into the left lane soon as possible and then overtake soon after when it's safe
@JohnFarrell-bc8gt
@JohnFarrell-bc8gt 10 ай бұрын
@@suzukidaniel1396 it may be frustrating if a lorry on a 2 lane carraigeway is holding up drivers who wants to keep at 70mph. But the trucker doesn't cause the lines of vehicles behind tailgating. Its the drivers themselves have the choice if they want to tailgate.

Give way to traffic on the motorway when joining,and DONT TAILGATE. Most drivers don't think they are tailgating when they are They haven't got a clue how far ot takes to stop a vehicle. She will end up doing it,just like all the others. Just like some people reading this! This instructor is totally wrong. 70 mph is very fast! It takes over 300 feet to stop a car,and in the wet it may take over 400 feet in the wet. The 2 second and four second rules are are very poor indication of safe gaps. Car lengths are a better indication,and if conditions allow,you must stay as far as you can from other road users! Moving back when you see the car in the mirror is too soon. You will take the stopping distance away from the car behind.The instructor needs a refresher! She didn't know the national speedlimit signs! Read the Highway Code BEFORE YOU DRIVE These are the airheads that drive on our roads. Low standards and poor driving everywhere. Driving at high speed with one hand. This is risky for an experienced drivers.This instructor is a joker! Do it at low speed. I have criticised many driving instructors on their teaching techniques,and they never reply!
