Hello, I professionally work with epoxy resins, make carbon fiber for auto tuning. Use Degasser for epoxy resins. But the best result is obtained if the resin is degassed in a vacuum chamber before pouring. And ideally, after pouring, place the product in a vacuum chamber for 10-15 minutes. Such a chamber is easy to make from a gas cylinder or a receiver from a compressor. After that, your products will be crystal clear from bubbles.

Air bubbles because you did not vacuum pot the epoxy before the pour., you are also better off with using vaseline on the plexi glass prior to the pour., then find a way to vibrate the table after the pour so it will settle in the small grooves.
@BMSculptures4 жыл бұрын
Damnit I could have just put vaseline on it!!!??? That won't mess with the epoxy? I have seen many people uses these pressure tanks before. I do not have one, and even if I did, I do not think this cleaver would have fit inside the ones that I have seen. I like the idea of vibrating the piece though. More bubbles could have escaped that way for sure!

Important to stabilize the wood. Pour within a vacuum chamber and set vacuum many times during pour to pull bubbles out.
@BMSculptures4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I now know that.... Looking back at this I still would have ran into problems because of the gap between the metal tang and the wood. There would be no way to release the air trapped inside those gaps, which would cause large bubbles regardless the stabilizing.

Each brand and type of epoxy has unique considerations but here are some general recommendations: Orient the pour properly ( in this case you had the form seal in the tall side making it a deeper pour than needed. If you place it on its side it would have reduced the depth of pour and provided a nice large open top you could torch to remove bubbles.) If using 5:1 epoxy you need to pour no more than 1/4 inch deep (at least with total Boat epoxy) and you can add extra layers after about 2 hours. If you pour too deep you get cracks and if you wait too long you have to scuff the surface for a good bond. Brush on a thin coat of epoxy to all the surfaces prior to the actual pour/pours. This creates a seal coat and removes all bubbles caused by the wood. Make your form out plywood of wood and use Tyvek tape on all surfaces that will touch the epoxy. Seal the inside corners of the form with silicone caulking (use a fondant tool to smooth the edges if needed). Great project and keep up making unique and amazing content. It is truly inspiring.

I think there are a couple of issues here which I know from watching more recent videos is something you've now sorted out but there are a few ways to remove bubbles 1, a pressure pot during the curing process that squeezes them to microscopic levels so you can't see them I have a 40L one but the cleaver would need to be poured from the end so that it would fit in. 2, Use a vacuum chamber to degas the resin before it's poured which I know you now use. 3, a heat gun or blow torch would encourage bubbles to rise. As for the cracking that is usually caused by a heat fracture. Resin cures through an exothermic reaction so it heats as it cures a deep pour or slow cure resin causes less heat so would've helped in this situation as it gives the bubbles more time to rise and disperse and can be poured in larger volumes hence is less prone to cracking. It's great to see you show the flaws as people learn more from it that way and like I always say it's never a failure you've just found another way not to do it :)

When I made my desk and used epoxy to cover the paper money from around the world (bills sealed first), I used a blow torch on the finish to take out the bubbles but I did many thin layers so not sure how it would work with a pour. Plus, you wouldn't want to scorch your evo-men.

Hope that I am not repeating something that some results has already said LOL. Besides using a torch or a heat gun and using heat to get the bubbles out also you can spray paint the wood and the other stuff in there with the clearcoat like just any rust oleum or something to seal the air bubbles into the wood because that’s where you’re getting the bubbles from ,it’s seeping out of the wood however your vacuum chamber will also take care of that

Hey I know I’m really late but I just found your channel and I’m so glad I did! You’re really talented and creative, I’ve never seen anything like this before. I’m not an expert by any means but from what I’ve seen I think if you stabilized the wood first it would help. Also a pressure pot is the best way to get rid of bubbles but obviously that wouldn’t work for a shape like this so your next best bet would be a blow torch. I think I saw in some of your replies that you used a heat gun which I’m sure helped somewhat too. Also the type of resin you use can make all the difference. Regardless this was such a cool project, I love the evolution of man idea. And I’ve never seen a fish like that! Is the meat actually blue??

I like the idea, but in my opinion the handle is too thick. You cannot grab it properly. And the man with the spear in your evolution theme is too high, I guess, I do not see the tip of the spear in the final version anymore. Did it get lost at the belt grinder? So: Yes, the idea is great, but you could have spend some more time in the developing period. But this is just my opinion.
@BMSculptures4 жыл бұрын
Hey Christopher. Because of the roundness of the handle, it distorts the images. The Spear tip is still in the epoxy and has around 1/8" clearance from the top. Also to the first question about the handle, I had to make it thick in order to fit the evolution silhouettes inside. At the end of the day this is an art piece and not really made for function.
