I made an outdoor kitchen at home in Wisconsin, I used granite tile bedded in thinset, big mistake the third winter lifted most of the tiles, I pulled all of the tiles and cleaned them up and used silicon to bed them and allowed the silicone to fill the joints as well. Clean up was a little more difficult but it been 6 years and no problems, win win.

that tiling looks *FANTASTIC* Mike! Now that you've done it, you kinda understand why you were quoted such high labor. that was a LOT of work to have to route every tile. because as you said they would usually just set/grout it, but you took it to a whole new level. the look is amazing, and as you said the thermal changes you go through, to make it look nice for its lifetime, that's what you had to do. 1 question. under the tiling is there any living space meaning is there any rooms of the house under that or is it just another outdoors area under it? Im a little interested in if that rubber is a good enough water/moisture barrier. because if there is a room under that tiling and it doesnt have a waterproof barrier. you may get some water coming through. I'm just thinking of like a shower, where you need a membrane under the tiling so you don't leak into the floor?? But very nice!
