This part of North America is abundant with natural gas. I would imagine this is what the largest expense will be. The house is so overbuilt, most of the electricity isn't as high as one would expect.

Mike did say he's got a bunch of solar on the house, so that will help. But I'm sure all the water heating is gas.

I love all Patey projects. At the same time they make me think about how the world may survive us? Dismissive language like „net zero lunacy“ may allow one or two more generations to ignore their responsibilities - it‘s harder now to be dismissive than it was during our grandparents‘ lifetime. Many of us would build a house like Mike Patey is building, if we had the means. We are going towards a world, where we will all have the means: How many monthly incomes did the cheapest pool cost during our grandparents‘ times? I am sure more than the quite decent $500 pool sets we can buy today. The cheapest car today costs less monthly incomes than the cheapest car at the time and can do more than expensive cars could do at the time. Automation is still dramatically increasing, making everything even more affordable. AI will do its part to make products and services cheaper. Worldwide average real monthly income has been increasing @2% per year for decades. Increasing income + cheaper goods = more material consumption -> unsustainable use of resources. The only solution I see is reducing the population worldwide. Which may be possible, as in most developed countries population only grows through immigration, more and more countries are developing, and today’s kids have the information that church is as much about power as it is about truth. I am deliberately saying church and not religion. But I am being hopeful here.

The complexities of any one of these systems is enough to give the average Engineer nightmares. Not Mike Patey, not only is he not intimidated, he enjoys the challenge of designing each system and integrating multiple systems so that they mesh flawlessly, as do the many backups to each that he designed to protect each system, while complimenting the other systems as well. Very impressive good Sir. 😮

Mike the Walnut cabinets look great and once finished will look awesome. Two things I will caution you on. When using Partical board material for cabinets especially in wet areas. One is the partical board has an issue with water when it gets wet, it expands and once wet there is no recovery on the sub structure & surface, it is damaged forever. The second area of concern is the Base cabinets for the sinks. Any leak in this area are an issue as well. What I do is install FRP on any wet area cabinet weather its a plywood box or Partical board material. If you get a leak, it is generally too late for the damage has been done. The FRP is available at Home Depot and Lowes. I make (Drywall shims) cardboard patterns using hot melt glue, you make the base panel then cut 6" to 8" tall sides and back around the sides and back. Once glued in place with the FRP glue for a few hours. I then come back & seal the corners using white silicone as well as the top edge of the sides and front edge. The FRP is generally white I believe they do have a tan as well. In the case of an unintended leak under the sink it will save the cabinet.

On your outer most island with the BBQ grill. Did you put some kind of sealer on the underside of the counter for the exposed particle board under those chairs? I know water from up top isn't gonna be the problem with rain, but the underside will still get splashes from a heavy down pour. Maybe some kind of plastic barrier will help you if you over looked this. Love the whole project BTW.

Everything about this build is so far over the top that it should be tracked by NASA as a Near-Earth Object. While I don't think I'll ever build anything like this, I am definitely filing lots of the solutions away for when I do build the retirement compound.
