Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
4. No evasion moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- *In gen1, evasion boosting is allowed if the Pokemon does it through means other than learning the move by level up or TM. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed. (This exception is to keep ranking consistent with my legacy videos.)
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons all my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- All in-battle glitches are allowed in generation 1
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1, banned in gen2, and allowed for bypassing terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
-- The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it

Until now I had no idea that Cleffa learned Flamethrower and Fire Blast, but _not_ Thunderbolt, Thunder, Ice Beam, or Blizzard, whereas Clefairy _does_ get those moves. What's more, this is _still_ the case in gen 9! I guess nobody uses this thing long enough to discover this naturally. I'm honestly confused as to why it has such a specific restriction...

My guess? It has to do with the visual design Visually, it looks like a star thanks to the two big ear points, the feet, the point from the hair swirl, and the arms tucked in. A star or a meteor, asteroid, or comet, considering it has a similar basic shape to the later introduced Minior. It kind of doubles as a reference to the theory Clefairy came from space, specifically the moon. And going with that, you have Flamethrower, a trail of fire coming from it like the tail of a comet, and Fire Blast, an explosion of flames, referencing what one would think comes from a meteor impact, or similarly, both being fire moves referencing the heat of a star. It might be a bit of a stretch, but most Pokemon references are, and it's the only reason why I can think of it getting Flamethrower and Fire Blast but not moves of equivalent power in other types, like Thunder, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, or Blizzard. Fire has more of a connection to the visuals (yes, asteroids and meteors tend to be covered in ice, but Ice Beam and Blizzard don't really reference that beyond the "ice" connection)

Regarding the complaint about the name “Psychic”: In the Japanese versions, the type is called “Esper type”, and the move is called “Psychokinesis” (they used loanwords from English, not native terms). The latter is obviously too long for a move name in English Red and Blue, and also the gen 1 localizers took some liberties that caused problems later - not that this hasn’t happened again … Looking at you, Aerial Ace, Sucker Punch, and Noble Roar.

To be fair, they could have changed the name later. It's not like it hasn't happened, at least in certain localizations. Like in spanish, where bullet seed was, for many gens, called Recurrente (I'm still not sure where they were going with that, besides being a single turn multihit attack) before changing it to Semilladora, which is a mix of semilla (seed) and ametralladora (machine gun), or Swift being changed from Rapidez (Swiftness) to Meteoros (a closer translation of the japanese name), to give a few examples. Psychic could have been changed to Psychokinesis at any given time, and let's be honest, it sounds much cooler.

@GrandleJams
@GrandleJams 7 ай бұрын
At 12:10, I do think your original strategy for Cleffa was the right choice, where rollout would break through onto Milktank. The only reason it ended up being so inconsistent and missing twice was due to the octazooka lowering your accuracy that the Clefairy did. i have a feeling that if you did stick to your guns, Milktank wouldn't have been an issue a second time around, as long as clefairy didn't hit you with a metronomed accuracy lowering move. Although Rollout is at a 90% accuracy, rollout hitting 4 times in a row, what you need, is still a higher chance than sing hitting when you need it to. .9^4 is 65%, and .9^5 is 59%, which are both higher than Sing's 55%. I do think that mud slap is probably(?) more consistent at that lower level, as long as Milktank cooperates and doesn't just stomp you to oblivion, I think it's mostly the correct answer with making sure Milktank's rollout doesn't do rollout things. Although, if Cleffa's Rollout hits, it's probably the fastest of the strategies, with the least amount of moves used. I guess it's the margin of consistency that you're willing to put up with for the possible gain. The second playthrough where you're level 30 with headbutt and pink bow is definitely the most consistent though, and if you need to reach that level later in the challenge anyways, it'd be fine to do so earlier on to steamroll through Whitney.

I’m happy to see Cleffa get a solo, that thing is just adorable! Wonderful video as always! Spoilers for second solo below: Watching HP Psychic in action, I didn’t see anything it did that HP Dark (aka perfect DVs) didn’t do better. It does the same damage to Morty, plus Return does about the same, if not more, to Chuck and Bruno. Plus you don’t have to sacrifice any defenses at all. I acknowledge that maybe HP Psychic is really good against Petrel’s team of Koffing x5 and Weezing, but from what you presented, I don’t see any advantages to HP Psychic over HP Dark.

I think it says a lot about how "seduced" you are by Sing that even when you acknowledge that you immediately deleted it from your moveset so you wouldn't be tempted by such an unreliable and inaccurate move, you are still lamenting how much it would solve your problems if you kept it. Especially because you had the tools you needed to break the combos on your moveset the whole time! Using Charm against the Scyther and Mud Slap against the Miltank are far more reliable strategies (and they're exactly how you beat them)! The irony of saying that not using Sing will force you to think of non-sleep strategies and then opining about how you wish you had kept it when you have better options that you're hesitant to take advantage of... You got this, man! You don't need Sing!

Scott, on the topic of fire blast/thunder/blizzard, bear in mind the weather effects were added in gen 2 too. In gen 2, thunder gets perfect accuracy in rain and 50% accuracy in sun (and is also able to hit while flying.) Fire blast's accuracy is constant 85%, and blizzard is 70%, but weather doesn't affect its damage. So rain buffs thunder's accuracy and nerfs fire blast's damage, sun buffs fire blast's damage and nerfs thunder's accuracy, and blizzard doesn't care what's going on. Weather being a whole new system, it kind of makes sense that they decided to try different things with the capstone abilities - Solar Beam also gained the 1 turn in sun / reduced damage in rain. And lastly of course, Gen1 hyperbeam was patched, so all of them got massively changed. (edit: needless to say, lots of changes came in later gens. In gen 3, blizzard has perfect accuracy in hail, and it hits both enemies in a double battle, and weather and double battles were kind of a big part of gen 3.)

Easy explanation for ghost being physical: The type was decided on gen 1 where the only ghost type move affected by the split was Lick. Lick is physical, cant change types after gen 2 as it was too late. Then, dark type was made to be special to create a contrast to ghost and that probably led to the motivation to make the physical/special split in gen 4. Just a theory, but I'm almost certain that's what happened. It just makes sense.

It doesn't cease to amuse me that it can learn Iron Tail. One of the smallest Pokémon that can use that move. It was my first Shiny Pokémon from the Odd Egg. Haven't had too many since but it is still a favorite of the babies because of my experience with it. Even though personally I'd love to live with a Wigglytuff. Maximum softness to help sleep. Anyways, I expected it would have trouble given its low stats. But at least its tool kit isn't the worst though the early game is almost always rough with limited move pools like this.

If you think about it, the only damage dealing ghost move in gen 1 was lick, which was undoubtedly a physical move. You asked why the capstone elemental damage moves have different accuracy ratings. And I think it goes back to gen 1 and what I believe would have been an expanded use of the Speed stat. I am fairly certain it was originally intended to govern the accuracy of moves. Hence thunder is very inaccurate, hydro pump a bit less, fire blast a bit more accurate still, and Blizzard at 90%. The only explanation I have for hydro pump is they were afraid Tentacruel was going to be too strong as a fast special monster. Other than that just look at the average speed of whatever will be using the move and you see a pattern emerge where they all always hit the average pokémon when comparing speed. I believe they abandoned it due to both time constraints, and balancing nightmares. I also believe that's why accuracy lowering and evasion boosting moves are so busted. I think at least Double Team was added very late in development to give Pokémon the chance to evade as they intended.
@TheModdedwarfare3
@TheModdedwarfare3 7 ай бұрын
Perhaps speed wasnt for accuracy but for evasion. There's also the likely possibility that they just didnt balance it very well because that is the case for so many things in the first 2 generations.

Hey I've been wondering something in these Crystal playthroughs. When it comes to obtaining the held items from the 'Day of the week' siblings which only appear on a certain day, do you stop and set the day appropriately each time if one is needed in a run, or is your Crystal rom modded to have them spawned in regardless of the day? You often pick up one of these items on runs but I'm not sure if you ever mentioned this detail.

You mentioning a KZbinr using Chuck's strategy actually made me really curious as to which trainers' teams would be the best to speed run these games. Is there any chance that would be something you'd be interested in trying out? A tier list where you rank trainers' teams would be hilarious, especially if Bruno ends up in Bruno tier lol

@@corberus3119 I know I watched that, and it was sick, but that wasn't using them in a playthrough. I'm curious how that would go.

24:03 Oh, and as for the accuracy discrepancies between Hydro Pump, Thunder, Fire Blast, Blizzard (and later Focus Blast and Hurricane) - when I create my personal ROM hacks, I like to equalise them all at 85%. That way, they miss often enough to not be completely reliable, but still hit often enough to not be overly frustrating or flat-out worse than their 95-power counterparts (Surf, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Flamethrower).

I had this question for a long time, you pick a lot of items for type atack boost. But the mayority of these can inly be pick on diferent days. Did u set the day for the item u want the most, or changue the gamr clock while playing. I speak spanish excuse my english

Would you consider adding effects like the screens directly on the gameplay display as little icon? I think the borders are getting real busy, xD

I like the idea of Sing/hypnosis/etc. similar to hidden power to be restricted to second playthrough only. (then from the first playthrough you also learn where these moves would be actually usefull)

I you tried Rollout a little bit in your first playthrough. Was it just not as good for Cleffa compared to its other moves?

A suggested additional data point: number of early game restarts -- that isn't tracked on any of the current metrics, but is very important in setting expectations for a mon's performance

You'd be surprised, Scott. There's a guy that plays this game Crossout on KZbin, and does ridiculous things that make no sense in gameplay. For some reason, he gets a lot of people following him despite being clearly bad at the game. Friend discovered him a few years back, and I only just now remembered.

If I were to spitball as to why Hydro pump got slightly worse accuracy compared to Fire blast despite not having a secondary effect it would be likely due to the existence of Surf being both 95 power + perfectly accurate and being an infinite use HM thus Water types (and some special attackers in general I suppose) already have very easy guaranteed access to a very strong move compared to something like Flamethrower which is a 1 use TM while being just as strong and accurate, that and in general making water types will always be easier than fire types meaning there would be more of them (and this is indeed that case in both gens 1 and 2) so they don't want to make their type's ultimate move too good since water is already a very good type overall in addition to being fairly common, plus Burn while not a bad status is not nearly as severe to suffer from as Paralysis or Freeze are since if a special attacking Pokémon gets burned its basically just the same as being poisoned whereas losing your turn is always devastating even when not guaranteed in the case of paralysis.
