Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
4. No evasion moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- *In gen1, evasion boosting is allowed if the Pokemon does it through means other than learning the move by level up or TM. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed. (This exception is to keep ranking consistent with my legacy videos.)
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons all my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- All in-battle glitches are allowed in generation 1
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1, banned in gen2, and allowed for bypassing terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
-- The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it

I've recently become interested in Gen 1 Pokemon due to the different design philosophy being used from the other games in the series and that comment about the training of psychic types feels very in line with what I'm learning about these games. Originally, types had positives and negatives outside of their type matchups like how rock is technically the strongest physically offensive type, but it only has one move (I'm not counting rock throw) and the move only has decent power and no effects.
@OathOfRevenge
@OathOfRevenge 11 ай бұрын
Rock is also designed to be the early game powerhouse of rby! It resists all early game types, it is the type of the first boss and the type of a monster you get early: geodude (80 base attack!). It's balanced by its nuke early stab move having AWFUL accuracy and all rock types having two common (for mid game) double weaknesses and very low special. A type balanced on game progression, something that was never the case in any other gen, definitely interesting!

Gen 1 games were inspired by JRPGs. Level up movesets were supposed to be bland, Normal-type and physical move focused, with TMs being used to "unlock" greater power and "upgrade" your Pokemon. The fact that the Pokemon often only learn special moves through a TM upgrade was intentional.

Most of the Slow growth rate pokémon, Mewtwo excepting, were always intended to be your core battling team and the recipients of TMs. Just look at Oak's teams. Tauros, Exeggutor, Gyarados, and Arcanine. All slow growth rate, all kinda bad without TMs.
@AnyThingWorx
@AnyThingWorx 11 ай бұрын
@@MichaelSotoCE That's fine, for Pokemon such as Jynx, Electabuzz, Magmar, Seel, Shellder, Staryu, etc. given that they're mid-late game Pokemon. What doesn't make sense is Pokemon such as Pidgey, Scyther, Pinsir, Growlithe. etc. having painful movesets that makes using them borderline unusable.

A couple of things I was thinking about in regards to the second run as I was watching it. The first is, I imagine you should be able to do blackout grinding on the Jr. Trainer in brock's gym. This should save some time because the Diglett gives a really good amount of experience points, and its a strategy that has gotten used elsewhere. The second thing is that I don't think Mega Drain as a move has much usefulness past Giovanni, and I don't really think its useful even there. It's the kind of move that feels like a bit of a trap because Exeggutor's Psychic is just so powerful that it's going to out-damage Mega Drain a huge portion of the time. It's a moveslot that could be taken up by other moves, such as Rest or Double-Edge. I think getting Stomp early is a really correct optimization though, it's a great call. Barrage is just really bad as a move lol.
@maxmanramfan
@maxmanramfan 11 ай бұрын
Agreed. Psychic is still better than Mega Drain since eve against things like Cloister and Sandslash, both moves are 2 hits in the Champion fight. Unless there's a problem with PP management, it's probably best to just run Psychic. Maybe put together a set like Psychic, Substitute, Rest, Mimic? Double Edge is a contender, but I do think the gap between Atk and Sp. in this case is pretty notable, and the versatility of stealing moves like EQ or Ice Beam makes Mimic the better option for offense in my eyes. If a physical move is needed, I wonder if Hyper Beam would work, since the recharge is removed if you land a KO, and the extreme base power might make up for middling Atk.

I don't agree with this sentiment tbh. Earlygame is part of the game just as much as lategame. Brock splits are one of the very few things that possibly leas to unpredictable results, whitout it you can figure out tier placements in 2 minutes. Now if i was Scott i'd probably just startscum till i get a the RNG to beat Brock at the lowest possible level(hell, i'd probably startscum up to misty or even Surge if i can do so in 15-20 minutes, but i play old CRPG, startscumming is second nature to me lol), but it is clear that startscumming is not considered a valid strategy for his ruleset.

I am pleasantly surprised at how well Exeggutor did. With this, 7 of the 13 Pokémon currently ranked OU in RBY are on the tier list: Slowbro, Gengar, Starmie, Jynx, Exeggutor, Jolteon, and Chansey. The 6 that remain are Tauros, Snorlax, Alakazam, Rhydon, Zapdos, and Cloyster. Of those, I'm pretty sure Zapdos and Rhydon are the only ones you've never used in Yellow. Also, if we add in the UUBL mons, we get Lapras and our reigning champion Victreebel. ETA: Victreebel is not actually UUBL, it is currently UU proper, but it does have history in OU. The second UUBL Pokémon is actually another top tier solo runner, Hypno. (end edit) I'm really curious to see how the traits that make these Pokémon as good as they are in standard competitive play translate over to solo runs. Exeggutor is an interesting case, as in a solo run it loses access to two of its most defining utility moves, Sleep Powder and Explosion, while its main weaknesses as a solo run Pokémon, its terrible level-up learnset and its Slow growth rate, aren't really relevant in competitive. I'm really curious to see Rhydon, since its main role as a physical tank that also stifles Electric types is much more valuable in the context of a full team. Those traits will be helpful in a solo run for sure, but without teammates to back it up against powerful Special attackers, especially Water, Grass, and Ice types, its weaknesses will be quite limiting. Lorelei's team, Lance's Gyarados, and the rival's Cloyster especially comes to mind in this regard. Plus, like Exeggutor, it has the Slow growth rate and a lackluster level-up set.

If anyone's wondering how the Flareon fight is easier than the Jolteon fight, then here's the explanation: In the Jolteon fight, Blue will have Ninetales as his fire-type instead, which outspeeds and knows Fire Spin (which his AI will force him to use exclusively). Furthermore, Jolteon has 4x super-effective damage with Pin Missile (and, again, will only use that due to AI) on top of its already high crit chance due to its base 130 speed stat. Exeggutor's level would need to be in the upper 80s to outspeed the Ninetales and it will never be able to outspeed the Jolteon even at level 100 without badge boosting.

It's not just that it is a stone evolution, the Exeggcute line just doesn't get many moves in Gen 1, because it's a Safari Zone pokemon. If you don't evolve it, then instead of getting Stomp it gets Leech Seed, Stun Spore, and Poison Powder. Granted, it can learn Toxic, so you can take advantage of the Leech Seed/Toxic glitch if you want, but that's not going to be enough for a solo challenge, and the line doesn't have the HP or defenses to Toxic Stall effectively, even with the healing from Leech Seed.

I honestly never understood the supposed "balance cost" of stone evolutions. Exeggutor, the stone evolution of a Pokémon you need to go to the Safari Zone to get (and thus, mid-game), gets only the Level 1 moves from Exeggcute's learnset. If you evolve it as soon as you get it, you can get... Stomp as a bonus move. Clefable, Nidoking and Nidoqueen, stone evolutions you can get before Misty, get four (for Nidoqueen and Nidoking, five in Yellow) of Clefairy, Nidorino and Nidorina's level up moves, respectively. Nidoking and Nidoqueen even get a powerful bonus move in Thrash and Body Slam, respectively, if you evolve them too early.

It seems I've learned a lot from all your videos Scott. :)

I wonder if you could backport all pokemon which non-legendary non-mega pokemon would do the best. I think Garchomp will crush both gen 1 and 2. For gen 1 it starts with dragon rage for the early game, gets dig soon and then once it reaches Celadon it can crush the rest of the game with a special set because Garchomp can and often is run as a mixed attacker. For gen 2, it can make use of rare candies whenever it needs without worry because it can easily set up on the pikachu against red safely dues to its ground type. Another option for gen 1 is Meowscarada. In gen1 its signature move is essentially Razor Leaf with 70 BP, it starts with a grass move and is really fast for gen1 standards. Also an interesting mon to backport imo is Arceus. You would think it would be amazing, then you look at its level 1 movepool... yeah.

Maybe this run provides an idea for a new series in these games, Something like 'ideal sets' so start the game with the ideal moveset of your choosing then see how fast they can really go.

You should do an Exeggutor run where you make Barrage and Egg Bomb grass type, it could be incredible if it got a better earlygame; if Exeggutor had these moves as a grass STAB it could have a S tier speed, possibly even better than Hypno and Gengar

Man, just giving this body slam would be enough to get it through that middle game. EDIT: even level 1 leech seed would be a crazy boost to this even with the slow kill. It'll keep it feeling the same, have a move execute would normally learn, and would give a "grass" move to make it feel more authentic.

How effective would Bide be on a Chansey? It has crazy HP and by learning soft boiled could recover.after use. Is this something you've considered. Also, I know this is an Exeggutor video, but this idea dropped into my head when you were using Bide so I thought I'd leave a comment in case I forgot later. Great video, as always.

Did anyone let Scott know that Grass type moves are special? I know mega drain/solar beam are trash, but i think with that base special, mega drain/double edge could do stuff for the mid game alongside psychic beefed up with PP up.

You should remember that first generation pokémon is a JRPG at its core. Psychic type pokémon are mages. I bet if you followed that intuition through a lot of other typing things in gen 1 would make sense. Consider from the time what seems to have been especially influential: Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line The Final Fantasy Legend

8 resets because of poison and freeze... That's nuts. I think it would perform better if it had started off with Mega Drain as it is a transferable egg move. I think it could easily shave 5 minutes if it did start with Mega Drain.

That ending was stressful! Really poor luck there, you should've been able to get past the Alakazam ~68% of the time. For a future run, would it be worth doing a first pass through Viridian Forest on minimum battles to blackout grind on the Jr. Trainer a few times for efficient Exp or does the backtracking and extra time on the Bug Catcher make that not worth it?
