My new project (because I needed more, clearly): A 1975 Citroen D Super 5, finished in many different colours, including Iron-Oxide metallic (rare dealer option).
You saw the reveal, now it's time to look around and maybe even go for a little drive around the corner...
It is not a car; It is Clement.

On both the DS/ID and the CX, the shape of some of the panels is just gorgeous. The DS bonnet and the madly deep front valence/under-tray are.jist pieces of insane art. I could go on.... Just a madly, aesthetically interesting car.... The crazy roof panel.... the frameless door windows.... the absence of what would normally be called sills (of course there are sills, but not in the usual place. Too many mad details to mention. You are going to have such a good time on this one.

Class. Like your restoration plan. Can wait to see Clement with his clothes off ;-) Nerdy points: - Engine is 115bhp IIRC with twin choke weber. - Your hydraulics look to be in good shape if it's retaining pressure for the rack. Rack is the biggest source of internal leaks on a DS.I'd say your HP cycle time is much longer than mine. Ooh-er. - I think you'll be surprised with steering feel when pushing on BTW particularly compared with CX or SM. Mine is very chatty, and no issue knowing what's going on up front. - manual was an option on DS from '61 I think, standard from '73 or '74 I think, with the semi-auto moving to an option. DSuper5 is pretty much a manual DS21 in all but name. - Your car has been Pallasified. The doors have extra chrome on top and bottom. Dsuper5 had a different black rubber running strip on the door from the Pallas. Personally I prefer the look without any of those shiny bits and the doors last longer without lots of screw holes - Your interior is pretty much Pallas Spec except the roof - lights are correct on the pillar for DSuper5. Good news is the standard DS/DSuper interior is way cheapar to source. It has textured plastic linoleum type stuff over the sills, a flat cloth seat with a waffle print and painted door tops with a simpler door card. To my (completely biased) eye, its more elegant than the pallas. - You're right about the rearview mirror, it should be glued to the glass floating about 2" above the speaker grille on the dash otherwise you'll only get a view of the sloping roof. A key difference between the DS and other old citroens is parts availability. You can get pretty much any part from a variety of suppliers - even replacement fibreglass wings and doors! For example a new boot floor is about £60. Most of the SM bits are made of unobtainium by comparison.

Yeah agreed. Re. parts, never had a bother. De frazozers (my spelling) very good. Agreed steering rack often cause of pressure leaks. Also a new main accumulator can fix a multitude of issues.
@janvalasekcz
@janvalasekcz 2 жыл бұрын
I would generally agree on the availability of all parts with some exceptions. The color lenses in the 3 round dial dashboard are impossible to come by as all old ones are destroyed by the heat from the light bulbs. Also the original Jaeger temperature meter (which was an optional extra) for the dashboard is also not available.
@stoneylonesome4062
@stoneylonesome4062 2 жыл бұрын
Used to work at Jerry Hathaway’s shop, SM World. Sometimes people would try and cut corners with SM parts availability by jury-rigging parts that were meant for the DS/CX, however that increases likelihood of problems. There’s already a degree of parts bin sharing between the three. Often times we’d have to use Jerry’s Leno connections to reach out to people with the tooling and machining expertise to fabricate parts for classic cars.

Yes you are exactly correct in all your information about the different models and transmissions. The reference to the DS semi-auto being complicated, reminds me of the C4Grand Picasso that we bought at 3 years old, the EGS on which had completely stopped speaking to the gearbox. What a shed! I've driven Clement. I would have bought it, but the rust is much too far gone for my ability to fix. It needs a lot of work, but it deserves it. Probably my favourite of all the cars I've driven. So much character, and the ride quality is so good it makes you wonder why they still make cars with steel springs. It makes modern cars feel primitive.

I remember travelling in DS taxis on holiday in the former Yugoslvia as a child. They were old cars even then, but it was a revelation how comfortable they were compared to my dad's new cars (usually Granadas) of the time. It was a magic carpet ride. That was when I realised that Citroens were special (early 80s), and that's when I started to love the brand. It'll be interesting to see what you'll need to do to get it roadworthy, and I agree about keeping it looking as it is. Well done Rich. Great project.

My dad had a 1961 ID. It had a "normal" brakepedal with a "normal" feel to it (supposedly - I was too young to drive). On his last drive in that car he applied the brakes and the car slowed down, but as he explained "it pulled up it's legs like a turtle and came to rest on it's belly" (not quite true, but it lost suspension pressure and was almost touching the ground). So obviously the brake and hydraulics was connected even on this low spec model. The problem wasn't too serious, but he decided to buy a new car, a 1966 ID. It still had a "normal" brakepedal, but the pedal-travel was extremely short, akin to the mushroom button. It was probably the same type of valve connected to the hydraulic system, just positioned in a different place. I drove this car (a lot), and also a D Super5 from the early seventies (very like yours) that he unfortunately decided not to buy. That also a had a seemingly normal brake-pedal with the same feel as the 1966 car. So maybe the "mushroom" brake was an option that was considered too bold for some markets?

I used to work for Jerry Hathaway at his shop (SM World) in California. I saw many Goddesses in rough shape like that which had been left exposed to the elements out in the desert in the Palm Springs area. Hydro pneumatic system is finicky and requires special tooling but once you understand it is fairly easy to work on. In-line four cylinder of the DS is bulletproof (and thus very tune-able), I’ve only seen maybe two of them fail and that’s because someone was a r-tard and messed around with the timing belt/chain. We had several customers who swapped them out for turbocharged air-cooled Porsche flat-6’s with Inter coolers in place of the radiator.
@christianronn5301
@christianronn5301 2 жыл бұрын
The reason the DS has an in-line four buried under the dashboard is that the flat-six it was supposed to have didn’t work out. They had designed a low bonnet for the flat engine and had to stuff the old four-pot way in the back. So a porsche six is actually a great swap.
@stoneylonesome4062
@stoneylonesome4062 2 жыл бұрын
@@christianronn5301 Yes, turbo flat-6 air-cooled Porsches give it the power it deserved so it can keep up with modern traffic and cruise at higher speeds with taller gearing on the highway, and are themselves quite reliable, especially when rigged up with an in-line mechanical Bosch fuel injection pump driven by a timing chain/gear. It causes torque steer, however it can be rectified by retrofitting it with DIRAVI components from a CX or BX. It costs money and requires some rearranging but it makes an already modern classic drive like a brand new car.

I am continually recognising the technology transfer from Citroen DS to Audi 100. I knew that they used Citroen hydraulic equipment and yes it all was inclined to leak, but it was excellent in its function. They also had the dumb irons coming from the firewall structure onto which all the bodywork attached. Hydraulic servo brakes were fantastic. Hydraulic self levelling rear suspension on the posh models was great for load lugging. Germans always liked the traction avant so it should be no surprise perhaps.

The real twin of the SM is surely a CX, especially considering it would come with the Diravi steering and most probably a 5 speed gearbox as well. I can see that the ability to remove the body panels so easily will assist you mightily in restoring Clement’s running gear, but as you pointed out in the posting, the SM has a monocoque construction similar to the CX. I’ll definitely be following your further articles on all your Citroen models, but I eagerly await the day when you finally succumb and get the real pinnacle of Citroen achievement, a series 1 CX in either Pallas or Prestige trim.

The SM is effectively a DS on steroids. The CX has some similar components, but it's quite different.

Brilliant! It also brings back memories à la française: an uncle drove a DS (after his Peugeot 405 and a Renault R4), my late father had a GS for years (after a Renault R6), and I still have my first car from 1984, a 2CV4, stored away for further work.

Hi Richard, great car. I had a white DSuper5 (see what Citroen did there) back in the early eighties, GKF 207 L. It had the button brake, the mirror mounted on the dash and black vinyl seats. It could spin the wheels accelerating in third. Remove the rear wings (using the wheel brace) and check the hydraulic pipes - mine were really rusty. The gear pattern is a normal 5-speed just mounted sideways on the column. Oh, and to change the starter I had to dismantle half the engine as it's located under the exhaust manifold. Patinated with mint mechanicals is the way to go. Good luck!

I've changed the starter with everything in place. It's a tight fit and you have to know where the screw heads are. But i IS possible. "Two hour job, as i recall.

The parents of a girl I went to Primary school with owned a Safari (In the Seventies). Apparently she was hanging from a door one day and it fell off, as did the rear hatch. It was lovely to travel in on a school trip. My other trip in a DS was an Ambulance in SW France in the late 70's (My fingertip got cut off in the boot hinge of a Renault 5. Either way. They make me weak at the knees. Love em. (The girl from Primary School went on to become a high flying architect.) Citroens breed Citroens really. It's not your fault. 👍

I'm completely with you on keeping the paint like this, in my opinion, a car of this age is allowed to show it a little.

When my family and a 5 y/o me moved to Luxembourg, waaaaay back in 1973, my father's first car, replacing the Humber Hawk that moved with us, was a D Super 5 (1973 brown), followed, over the years, by a CX GTI (blue, obvs), CX GTI Turbo, and XM. Boy, am I old... Fix it, enjoy it and cherish it! Reading through the comments, I'm pretty sure that my Dad's had a "proper" brake pedal as well, no button.

Was it LHD? I think it's only the RHD Supers that had the button.

I saw that beauty come up for sale when I was in the market for a classic a short while back! I chose a ready-to-go spitfire instead as I wanted something immediately drivable, but was still gutted when the DS sold! Glad to see it went to a good home and that you’re planning on doing exactly what I would have done to it 😊
