Welcome to our channel! In this video, we'll be exploring the fascinating life and legacy of Cleopatra Selene II, one of the most intriguing women of the ancient world.
Born in 40 BC as the daughter of the legendary Egyptian queen Cleopatra VII and the Roman general Mark Antony, Cleopatra Selene II was destined for greatness from the start. Despite the tragic end of her parents' lives, she managed to survive and thrive in a world of political intrigue, cultural clashes, and imperial ambitions.
As a young girl, Cleopatra Selene II was taken to Rome as a captive of the victorious emperor Augustus. However, instead of being humiliated or oppressed, she was raised as a royal princess in the imperial household, educated in the finest arts and sciences, and eventually married to Juba II, the king of Mauretania.
Together, Cleopatra Selene II and Juba II formed a powerful and enlightened partnership, promoting learning, exploration, and cultural exchange in their realm and beyond. They wrote books, patronized scholars, collected artifacts, and even sent expeditions to discover new lands and natural wonders.
However, their reign was not without challenges and tragedies. They had to face rebellions, wars, and personal losses, including the untimely death of their only son. Yet, they persevered and left a lasting legacy that still echoes in the history and culture of North Africa and the Mediterranean world.
In this video, we'll delve into the life and times of Cleopatra Selene II, examining her family background, her education, her marriage, her accomplishments, and her influence on the ancient world.
We also see the face of her son and the last Roman client king and ruler of Mauretania for Rome, Ptolemy of Mauretania.

This was fantastic! Loved the artistic recreations of how Selene, Juba, and Ptolemy looked. Given that Juba allowed his son to be named Ptolemy tells of the influence his wife had over him and his respect for her. Through her father, Mark Antony, Cleopatra Selene was half-sister of Antonia Minor, making her an aunt of Germanicus, Livilla, and the future-Emperor Claudius. This also means her son, Ptolemy, was cousin of the very man who had him murdered, Gaius Caligula, the son of Germanicus.

I recently found your channel. Absolutely breathtaking for me. You learn about these people as historical figures...like characters in a play from the past. Seeing them brought to life reminds me they were real people who looked like me or people I know. What you are doing is amazing to me and a gift. Thank you so much💜

Finally… I’d always adored Cleopatra, so imagine my surprise when I read she had a daughter that I was blessed to have her name. I studied Selene (my middle name) by reading books, staying inquisitive and more books! I never thought in future years I’d get to see the Face from all the history books I’d read. I imagined what she could have looked like, I’m simply gobsmacked. You have no idea how much identity I found researching Cleopatras family lineage, but now SEEING Selene is absolutely full circle. Her story is a triumphant one and needs to be honored. I am beyond grateful for this. Many thanks 🙏 for making this dream a reality. This means a LOT to me. ❤just amazing. ila Selene

I am always surprised to hear of this historical figure and ruler in the Ancient Egypt , it is likely, it is rare to know of that. And I know ,their parents were Cleopatra VII Philopator and Mark Anthony well in any case. I don't or didn't imagine they had this daughter, but I certainly know Cleopatra VII was the mother of her son Caesarion from Julius Caesar, Roman dictator as lovers anyway. Well, this video clip about Cleopatra Selene II is wonderfully great. As I cordially respect your big interest in Ancient Egypt history 😀❤🙏. Of course I thank you very much for everything about this story of her (Cleopatra Selene II). With my honest heart, good loyalty.... Keep doing your best!!!

I would love to see your recreations of the entire Ptolemaic dynasty (and the Seleucids, too, since they were so intertwined). I know you've done a lot of them already, but there's several in the middle and later periods who have reasonably good marble busts and would be good candidates for your process. Some other artists have attempted them, but their work is... well, let's just say they still need work.
@panagiotisconstantinou

Indeed, though we really don't know what Cleopatra VII looked like, as we are not 100% sure that the busts we have are hers. Yet I believe it's possible to somehow combine all the Ptolemaic rulers of her bloodline and produce an average image of hers.

@@panagiotisconstantinou interracial relationships doesn't seem to have been a problem at the time because Cleopatra Selene was married to Juba, a non-white man. Is there a reason why Shakespeare depicted Othello, the moor as a very dark-skinned man? It indicates that the Berbers of the time were very different to the people they are today. And Julius Caesar even had an affair with Eunoë, the Queen of the Numidian King.

@@yoroshikuonegaishimasu8649 he never saw but he certainly heard about them and saw paintings of them. Many of the mediaeval books have been lost. There are many engravings of Cleopatra and the Ptolemies made during the mediaeval period from objects such as medallions which are lost but the engravings remain even today. About the Berbers, it's interesting because Algerians were depicted in ancient Egyptian art with white skin whereas many of the other communities who weren't yet Islamic were probably non-white ethnicities. If you didn't know, Muslim people intermarry over long distances. This is why some Bangladeshis are light-skinned and Afghan-looking whereas others are very dark with Bengalic features which they originally are.
