That animated section was added after the 10th anniversary of the flick, and the art style was from the Clerks animated series, which came out years later (and is awesome) because they couldn't film at a real funeral home when they made the movie. Also, all the dialogue in that scene about the gameshow ties into Mallrats, and the girl Dante is talking to is Alyssa from Chasing Amy. Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse was the original connected film universe, before the MCU. (Also, he wasn't wearing his glasses in the funeral because he only wears those to drive)

@@endless013 True. If there was a little foreshadowing and the humor was mixed with something with a little more gravity, the alternate ending would appear organic to the rest of the film. There were two reasons why the ending was changed. One was because Kevin himself didn't like the ending once he first saw the movie after editing it. The other reason was because the Miramax talent scout, who was one of a handful people who saw the movie in the New York film festival, also didn't like the ending and asked Kevin if he was willing to change it if Miramax decided to distribute the film.

If you like the dialog in this movie, you'll probably like Smith's other movies. He loves doing scenes of dialog between characters.

Oh YES! I love this movie! I always ask "37?!" like Randal does whenever says that number. Trivia: This is the first film in Kevin Smith's intricately interconnected View Askewniverse series. The others being Dogma (1999), Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Clerks II (2006) and Jay & Silent Bob Reboot. These movies are all linked by characters, themes and events and each contains numerous references to the others.

Don't forget Captain Marvel, Stan Lee is reading the Mallrats script in that so in between periods of crying Kevin considers that a connection. (side note: it's so sad seeing him in this condition, he gave up sugar lost all the weight and now he's always crying.)

@@BigGator5 how is this hard to understand, Stan Lee was reading the Mallrats script in the MCU movie Captain Marvel ok you still with me? Goooood. Stan Lee was also IN Mallrats, I'm not confusing you am I? Because of this connection in a Q&A Smith said it is a connection to the Askewniverse.

Glad to see this here, such an independent film classic, I don't know if I've ever seen someone else react to it! Definitely a budget movie but with some good messages mixed in with comedy, I should really watch the whole thing again!

Love this movie.. Kevin Smith sold a comic book collection and financed 10 grand on a credit card to make this movie.. And its one of the best movies ever.

This movie was so influential, it kicked off a wave of low budget DIY films. None of them as good but it was something. Great casting for a no-budget movie too.

I can't believe someone actually reacted to this movie! Thank You! It's my favorite movie of all time! Kevin Smith changed my life! There is so much to say about this movie. But I'll say this one thing to answer your question...the reason it is black and white is for budget purposes. Smith put his savings and maxed out his credit cards to make this. He and Scott Mosier (who had a role in this film as well) signed up for a single class to get the school's discount on cameras and film. Again....Thank you for reacting to this! So freaking cool!

Kevin Smith definitely caught lightning in a bottle with this one. I like his work but he never really did anything as good as this one, and I think it's fair to say that his movies became progressively worse as time went one, and I say this not as a hater but as someone who has watched and enjoyed pretty much anything he's ever done but is trying to be fair about it. For me, this is his best movie, followed by "Chasing Amy" and "Red State" (his only non-comedy), and finally by "Mallrats." The rest are not in the same ballpark. Also, another cool thing is that he did the whole Shared Cinematic Universe long before anybody else, since some characters they mention in this one actually appear on his other movies and vice versa, and Jay and Silent Bob have at least minor roles or cameos in pretty much every movie he's done. Some other characters also pop us as cameos in other movies. For example, the whole bit with the lost scene here that it's added as a cartoon where they go to the funeral of a girl who drowned trying to lose weight because she was gonna be at some game show plays directly into the plot of "Mallrats," where the girl whose voice you recognized in the cartoon plays one of the main characters. It wasn't part of the original movie. And yes, you're right. I've seen the version with the real ending and Dante gets shot by a guy who holds up the store and had appeared earlier as a customer. Kevin Smith thought it was too depressing after all that happened in the movie, but I think it served to really bring home how Dante's day basically sucked and got progressively worse. He wasn't supposed to even go to work that day and he ended up nuking his relationship and maybe even dying, all of which wouldn't have happened if he'd stayed home.

That guy with the beard who tried to give Silent Bob a burger is Scott Mosier. He has produced almost everyone of Kevin Smith's movies and was the director for the recent the Grinch Stole Christmas animated movie.

The animated scene was a special scene from the "Clerks"animated series that came out sometime in the 2000's, but we never see what happens at the funeral in the film proper. The original ending of the movie was going to be Dante being killed by a robber who loots the cash register and runs away, but Smith decided it was too depressing an ending. In all the "View Askew"movies, Silent Bob usually speaks only once, usually with something profound(though not always).

Having worked years of retail, this movie just gets more relative the older I get. Randall has such good line delivery. "Balls resting on his lips" line cracks me up every time. This is a cult classic. Just wait for Mallrats and Jason Lee. He's easily my favorite actor to come out of the Kevin Smith films. He was a pro skateboarder before he started acting. Jay and SB are awesome of course too.

The Quick Stop was a store Kevin Smith actually worked at and maxed out 10 credit cards and sold his comic book collection to shoot this movie. He alternated between working at the store and shooting the movie which is why the shutters were closed, because he could only shoot at night, so he wrote in that the locks were jammed with gum and Dante couldn't open them. Also initially Kevin Smith wrote the lines for Randal because he was going to play him which is why he's got all the best lines, but he realized that he sucked at memorizing lines so he hired Jeff Anderson to play the role.

Sorry in advance, this is going to be a long one. So, Kevin was doing this for his final exam on film school that wond up going to the Canne Film festival that got him 3 awards. He had to come up with all the expenses himself, so he had to pawn his entire collection of factory condition comic books to fun the whole thing. He only had a budget of $27k for it. Which explains the black and white film. That kind of film was the cheapest. The script was all tales of his own life as a real clerk at the same for real convenience store that the film was made in, in which he was given permission from his boss to film there as long as it was after closing. He filmed this whole thing in a short 22 days. All of his friends from school and his real life long friend Jason Mews(Jay) on top of his own sister ( the woman talking about the egg Nazi) , his own brother ( the aforementioned egg Nazi), and his own mother ( the woman checking on the milk dates) to be in the film. One again, sorry for the long one.
